PHILLIES NEWS

The good times keep on rolling for the Phils. Cole Hamels didn't have his best stuff today, but it was still good enough for 6 solid innings, while allowing just 4 runs on 8 hits. The Phils meanwhile had another day of potent offense. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard both hit solo homers in the first inning. In the second, Chase Utley doubled in a couple runs. In the 3rd Aaron Rowand jacked another solo homer. Still, going into the bottom of the 5th St Louis only trailed 5-4. However, from here on out it was all Phils, or should I say, it was all Pat Burrell. In the 5th Burrell doubled in 2 runs and then scored on consecutive sac flies. Then in the 6th inning Burrell hit a 2 out bases loaded single for 2 more runs and suddenly the Phils were up 10-4. Ryan Madson shut down the Cards in the 7th and 8th innings and Antonio Alfonseca closed them out in the 9th. So the Phils have now improved to 46-44, but both the Mets and Braves won today as well, so they remain in 3rd place 4 games behind the 1st place Mets. Still, life remains beautiful.

SIXERS NEWS

In their first game of the rock mountain revue summer league the Sixers romped to an easy win over the Spurs, but as usual who cares. Anyway, Thaddeus Young led the way with 19 points, Louis Amundson chipped in with 17 points, Herbert Hill popped in 14, and Louis Williams and Bobby Jones both dropped in 13 points.

PHILLIES NEWS

On this friday the 13th, the bad luck resided with the Cardinals. It all started in the 1st inning. Jimmy Rollins leadoff with a ground rule double. Shane Victorino bunted him over and then not only reached base, but wound up on 3rd base, on a throwing error by pitcher Kip Wells. Rollins obviously scored on the error. Chase Utley then singled in Victorino. Ryan Howard followed with a double, and Aaron Rowand popped up, but it got over the head of Albert Pujols and Howard and Utley scored. Rowand, unfortunately was thrown out at 2nd. Unfortunately, for St. Louis that was only the first out. Pat Burrell and Greg Dobbs put together consecutive singles and then after a strikeout by Carlos Ruiz, the pitcher, Kyle Kendrick singled to score Burrell. Jimmy Rollins then grounded out to end the inning but the damage had been done. The Phils scored again in the second, 3rd, and 4th innings and before you knew it they were ahead 9-0. St.Louis finally scored in the 5th inning, but it was too little to late. Kendrick wound up going 7 strong innings while allowing just run on 6 hits and striking out 4. By the time Kendrick left the game the Phils had tacked on 4 more runs and led laughingly 13-1. Although they allowed 2 runs on 1 hit, J.C Romero, Jose Mesa, and J.D Durbin combined to close out the Cardinals in the 8th and 9th innings for a 13-3 win. In all the Phils amassed 13 runs on 23 hits in this laugher and are now back above .500 at 45-44. Also the Phils are back within 4.0 games of the first place Mets, but remain in 3rd place, 2.5 behind the Braves. Still Life remains beautiful.

PHILLIES NEWS

The All-star game was tonight and as mentioned 3 Phillies took part in it. Chase Utley started at second base and went 0 for 2, Cole Hamels pitched a scoreless 4th inning in relief, and Aaron Rowand came off the bench in the 8th and went 0 for 2, flying out with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, the bases loaded, and the National League trailing 5-4. In other words Rowand blew chance to become a Phillies legend, and the National League lost its 11th all-star game in a row. Which of course means, that if the Phils somehow reach the World Series, they will not have the home field advantage.

SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers continued summer league play and actually won for a change, as Rodney Carney scored 30 points, and Louis Williams continued his hot play with 29 points. It's too bad no one cares about the Sixers right now.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils remain on their all star break, but one Phil working today was Ryan Howard who participated in the all-star game homerun derby, in defense of the title he won last year, despite not scoring an invite to tomorrow's all star game, although 3 other Phillies did,(Chase Utley will start at second, Aaron Rowand will come off the bench, and Cole Hamels will come out of the bullpen). Anyway, Howard didn't quite do so well this year, hitting only 3 homers and failing to advance to the 2nd round, while the new homerun derby champ wound up being the Angels Vlad Guerrero. Better luck next time big guy.

SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers continued summer league play today, and yeah they lost again, but again who cares. Anyway, Louis Williams dazzled again with 23 points 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. Thaddeus Young also chipped in with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Jason Smith scored 12, while pulling down 10 rebounds. Also Rodney Carney chipped in with 19 points.

PHILLIES NEWS

Today marked the Phils final game before the all-star break, and it was a big one, considering the Phils needed it to get back to the .500 mark for the break. For the first time in the series the Phils actually fell behind early 3-0, but the like Rockies in the last 2 games they rallied back. In the 3rd Chase Utley and Ryan Howard delivered consecutive 2 out RBI singles to cut the lead to 3-2. After Colorado put the lead back up to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning, Pat Burrell hit a solo homer and Jimmy Rollins delivered yet another 2 out RBI single to tie it at 4-4 in the 4th. In the 6th Jimmy Rollins delivered another 2 out RBI single to put the Phils up 5-4. Of course at that point another rain delay ensued, and things got a bit wild. The wind picked up incredibly as the rains came and the grounds crew couldn't get the tarp down, as it blew over on top of some of them. Suddenly, the Phillies players, 17 of them, and coaches came running out onto the field to help out, and they did so, freeing the guys stuck under the tarp and weighting it down with beanbags until it was finally in place. When the delay ended the Phils were rewarded for their efforts with a little good karma, if you will. In the 7th Shane Victorino hit a 2 run homer to put the Phils up 7-4. Then in the 8th Ryan Howard put the Phils up for good, 8-4, with a sac fly. Ryan Madson then came in and retired the Rockies in the 8th and 9th innings for the win. So at the break the Phils are 44-44, 4.5 games behind the Mets for first and 2.5 games behind the Braves for 2nd. Life is thus beautiful again.
