FLYERS NEWS

After back to back tough losses the Orange and Black desperately needed to come out on top tonight as they lowly Islanders visited the Wells Fargo center. Although the penalty kill had a perfect night, on the whole the Flyers weren't that great defensively. Once again Sergei Bobrovsky was great stopping 36 of 37 shots otherwise this might have been another tough loss. Meanwhile, James Van Reimsdyk and Jeff Carter helped the Flyers build a nice early lead. About 8 minutes into the 1st period Claude Giroux setup Jeff Carter for a 1-0. Then Kris Versteeg setup JVR for a 2-0 lead. After New York cut it to 2-1, JVR struck again off assists from Andrej Meszaros and Sean O'Donnell for a 3-1 lead at the 1st intermission. Neither team scored in the 2nd period. Then halfway through the 3rd period Danny Briere and Giroux teamed to setup JVR for his first career hat trick and a 4-1 lead. From there Bob held off the last few Islander charges and the Orange and Black held on for an important 4-1 win. With the win the Flyers move to 100 points on the season and remain the top team in the Eastern conference and the Atlantic division by 2 points.

SIXERS

After pulling out a win over the Hawks the Sixers faced a much sterner test tonight in Miami in a possible playoff preview. Despite a good effort on both sides of the floor, they failed the test. The hobbled Andre Iguodala was just no match for Lebron James and the Sixers just don't have anyone who can cover Dwayne Wade. Together that duo powered the Heat past the Sixers in the latter stages of the game. The Sixers didn't make it easy though, on either side of the floor. Defensively, they racked up 10 steals and forced Miami into 15 turnovers. Offensively, they shot a decent 46% from the field and 36% from beyond, as 6 Sixers scored in double figures. Lou Williams again led the way with 24 off the bench, Thad Young had 15, and 8 rebounds, also off the bench, Jodie Meeks had 14, Jrue Holiday and Spencer Hawes each had 13, and Andre Iguodala had 10 but was clearly too bothered by his bad knee to score more.

That scoring and stealing twice allowed the Sixers to jump out by leads of 8 or more early in the 1st quarter and early in the 4th quarter, but each time Lebron and Dwade turned it on when necessary and the Sixers had no answer. Despite a brave battle down the stretch the Sixers eventually bowed out 111-99. So if possible they'd probably like to avoid Miami in the first round.

PHILLIES NEWS

Joe Blanton tossed 6 scoreless innings, while allowing 5 hits and striking out 4 as the Phils knocked off the Braves 3-1.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers got outworked tonight as they entertained the Penguins. Considering Pittsburgh remains without Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, the Flyers have no excuse for getting outworked. Fortunately, the spectacular play of Sergei Bobrovsky help them avoid a total failure. Bob faced 31 and stopped 30 of them, at times incredibly, just because he had to be. Take Bob and this might have been a very embarrassing night for the Orange and Black. Instead with him sprawling and diving for stops and with Mike Richards' score with just under 5 minutes to play in the 1st period, the Flyers were at least able to get to overtime. Neither team scored in overtime and the game went into a shootout. Danny Briere scored again in the shootout but Bob ran out of magic and was beaten badly in the last 2 rounds as the Flyers fell 2-1.

PHILLIES NEWS

Cole Hamels allowed 6 runs on 9 hits while striking out 7 in 6 and 2/3rds innings as the Phils lost to the Twins 7-3.

SIXERS NEWS

Coming into tonight the Sixers trailed the 5th spot in the Eastern conference by just 3.5 games. Win tonight against the slumping Hawks and they'd pull within 2.5 games. For a while it didn't look like that was going to happen. Atlanta was hot from everywhere and the Sixers didn't seem to have an answer for them. Still, as well as the Hawks played they couldn't pull away from the Sixers. The Sixers shot 48% from the field and an amazing 55% from beyond. Not surprisingly with that shooting they wound up with 7 guys in double figures. Lou Williams actually led the way with 17 off the bench, Andre Iguodala and Thad Young each had 16, Jodie Meeks went 5 of 6 from beyond and wound up with 15, Elton Brand had 13 and 11 rebounds, Jrue Holiday had 12 and 5 assists and finally Spencer Hawes had 10 to round out the scoring.

All that together was enough to keep the Sixers close for 3 quarters and then when they needed the most they were pick it up on D in the 4th. There they outscored Atlanta 31-20 as they rallied ahead with 10 minutes to play en route to a big 105-100 win.

PHILLIES NEWS

Roy Oswalt allowed 3 runs on 4 hits in 3 innings while striking out 4 before getting drilled in the neck by a liner. Fortunately he was ok but the Phils weren't as they lost to the Rays 4-1.

FLYERS NEWS

After pulling out a win over Dallas in their last game the Flyers returned to the Wells Fargo center tonight to begin arguably their most important homestand of the season. Unfortunately it didn't quite get off to the start they were hoping for as they entertained the Ovechkinless Caps. Defensively they were pretty good, holding Washington to just 23 shots on goal. The goaltending was not so good with Sergei Bobrovsky allowing 3 goals on just 9 shots in 20 minutes. Brian Boucher was better stopping 13 of the Caps last 14 shots but that wasn't quite enough for the win. Thanks Bob's struggled the Flyers trailed 3-0 early in the 2nd period. About 8 minutes into the 2nd period Kris Versteeg finally put the Orange and Black on the board. Then in the final seconds of the 2nd Andreas Nodl setup Claude Giroux to cut it to 3-2.

Halfway through the 3rd period Giroux returned the favor as Nodl tied things up at 3. Later with about 6 minutes to play Kimmo Timonen and Ville Leino teamed to setup Danny Briere for a 4-3 lead. After that with just over 3 minutes to play Boosh whiffed on a point shot from the blue line tying things up at 4 and eventually forcing overtime. Neither team scored in overtime, forcing a shootout. Ville Leino and Danny Briere each scored in the shootout but Boosh beaten by all 3 shooters he faced and the Flyers lost a tough one 5-4.

PHILLIES NEWS

Cliff Lee allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 2in 6 innings while Raul Ibanez collected his 3rd homerun of the spring in a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays.

Joe Blanton allowed 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 2 in 6 and 1/3rd innings and Jimmy Rollins collected his first homerun of the spring but it turned out to be the Phils only run in an 8-1loss to the Yankees. In other news the Phils have agreed to a minor league contract with 2B Luis Castillo. Considering the type of contract and how little time is left in spring training the chances of Castillo making the Phils roster are probably slim, but he is insurance nonetheless.
