FLYERS NEWS

The good times keep on rolling for the orange and black. In their opener tonight against the Islanders, they took care of business quietly and efficiently. Jeff Carter, Jason Smith, and Sami Kappanen all scored for the Flyers on the night, and Martin Biron was dazzling in goal with 29 saves out of 30 shots faced, as the Flyers won 3-1. After a scoreless 1st period, Kapanen and Carter each scored goals in the 2nd period to put the Flyers up 2-0. A shorthanded Islander's goal cut the lead to 2-1 early in the 3rd period, but Biron held steady the rest of the way and then Smith scored on the Islander's empty net with less than a minute to play, to put it away for good. So the Flyers improve to 3-1, and seem to be firing on all cylinders right now. Who would have thunk it.

EAGLES NEWS

The Eagles return to action tomorrow, picking up right were they left off at the Meadowlands, but this time they'll be facing the Jets. With their offense, as mentioned, back intact, the Bird's should find tomorrow's game more to their liking then their last game against the Giants, in which they allowed a single game team record 12 sacks.

EAGLES NEWS

More good news for the Eagles. It has been confirmed that William Thomas, Brian Westbrook, L.J Smith, and Todd Heremans will return the Eagles' starting lineup on Sunday. So the Eagles offense will be back at full strength for the first time all season. However, Lito Sheppard is still listed as questionable for Sunday, and Brian Dawkins will not play play on sunday. So the Eagles defense' will remain shorthanded, but it's been okay thus far without Sheppard and Dawkins, and there's no reason it won't stay that way on Sunday against the lowly Jets.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers return to action Saturday night in their home opener against those stinkin New York Islanders.

PHILLIES NEWS

More offseason intrigue for the Phils as Abraham Nunez and Rod Barajas had their contracts bought out by the Phils and thus won't return to the team next season. Barajas is no surprise, because he was nothing more than lameduck at the plate and behind it, remember all those times dropped the ball during plays at the plate in mid-season, probably costing the Phils a game or two. All can I say is thank God for Carlos Ruiz and Chris Coste. As for Nunez, he is somewhat of a surprise, given that he was the only 3rd baseman on the Phils roster who could play consistently good defense, but I guess the Phils have a lot of faith in Wes Helms and Greg Dobbs.

EAGLES NEWS

More encouraging news from practice as tackle William Thomas, the guy that Winston Justice was trying replace, when we he was massacred by the Giants Osi Umenyiera, in the Eagles last game, returned to the practice field and participated with the rest of his teammates. Justice can only hope that Thomas plays on Sunday.

PHILLIES NEWS

Well, the Phils have their manager for next season, and it's still Charlie Manuel who agreed with the Phils on a two year contract extension with a club option for 2010. With that extension the Phils can now up their payroll. So all they have do now is re-sign free agent to be, all-star centerfielder Aaron Rowand, and bring in some pitching help and we're in business for next season. That's right you heard it here first, Philadelphia Phillies, 2008 World Champions, book it.

FLYERS NEWS

Well no surprise here, as the Flyers did hold on to win, or I should say they won easily 8-2. 7 different Flyers scored the 8 goals, with Simon Gagne, Daniel Briere, Mike Knuble, Joffrey Lupul, and Jeff Carter accounting for the 1st 6, and Mike Richards adding the last 2 late in the 2nd period and late in the 3rd period. In fact Richards alone, had 4 points on the night, with two assists to go along with those goals. Briere also had 2 assists as well to go along with his one goal. Martin Biron also had another solid night, saving 25 of the 27 shots he faced. Basically, the game was effectively over after the Flyers exploded for 4 goals in the 1st period, causing Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo to get yanked from the game. After Vancouver cut the lead to 4-2 early in the 2nd, the Flyers pulled away for good with 3 late goals in the period to go up 7-2. Then Richards added a goal for good measure late in the 3rd period. Add it all up and you get a dominating team effort, an 8-2 win, and a 2-1 start to the season for the Flyers. Not bad for the reigning worst team in the NHL.

EAGLES NEWS

There were some encouraging signs at the Eagles practice today, as Brian Westbrook, L.J Smith, and Lito Sheppard all participated. Now does that mean they'll be playing come Sunday, who knows, but it does at least increase the likelihood of that happening.

EAGLES NEWS

The Eagles are currently enjoying their bye week, well at least they would be if not for the debacle that was last sunday night's game against the Giants. Anyway, they return to action right where they left off, at the Meadowlands, next week against the J-E-T-S, Jets!. Although they have a lot to work on between now and then, with the way the Jets have played thus far this season, it is a game the Eagles should win and need to win.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers return to action Wednesday, in Vancouver against the Canucks. It should be a tough game for them.
