SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers traveled to Memphis tonight for a matchup with the lowly Grizzlies, winners of just 14 games this season. Still, the Griz gave the Sixers all they could handle tonight, as Mike Conley and Marc Gasol each scored 30. Fortunately, thanks 24 points from Andre Iguodala and a near triple double out of Andre Miller, with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists, the Sixers were able to hold them off. They shot 50% from the field and wound up with 6 scorers in double figures. Defensively, they were not very good at all, allowing Memphis to shoot 56% from the field, but 12 steals at key times, helped to offset that hot shooting just enough for the Sixers to win. Early on neither could get to far ahead of the other and it stayed like that for the duration of the game. By the half Memphis led by just 4 with the score 55-51. By the 4th quarter it was all knotted up at 79. Finally in the 4th quarter the Sixers inched ahead and managed to hang on for a 110-105 win. So the Sixers move back to .500 overall at 30-30, and remain 7th in the eastern conference. T'hey're going to have to play better defense the rest of the season if they want to stay there.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers welcomed the Nashville Predators to the Wachovia center tonight. Marty Biron got the start in goal and performed well saving 31 of the 32 shots he faced. Meanwhile Joffrey Lupul scored twice to help lead the Flyers to a win. After a penalty filled 1st period Mike Richards scored off the power play just 45 seconds into the 2nd period for a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later Lupul scored his first for a 2-0 lead. Early in the 3rd period Martin Erat put Nashville on the board, cutting the lead to 2-1. A minute later Lupul scored his second for a 3-1 lead. Late in the 3rd period Claude Giroux scored to cap off the 4-1 Flyers' win. So the Orange and Black improve to 35-19-10 overall for 80 points and still 4th in the Eastern conference.

PHILLIES NEWS

Ryan Howard and rookie non roster invitee John Mayberry Jr each slammed 3 run homers to lead the Phils to an 8-2 spring training win over the Detroit Tigers today. Who needs pitching when you can hit like this.

EAGLES NEWS

The Eagles signed safety Sean Jones to a one year 3 million deal today. Jones has been the Cleveland Browns the last 3 years and was third in the NFL in that time with 14 interceptions. So he could be a viable replacement for Brian Dawkins or he could just provide some depth. Either way he's not quite one of the guys I was hoping the Eagles would sign, but he's better than nothing I guess.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers welcomed the Calgary Flames to the Wachovia center tonight. Antero Niittymak got the start in goal but unfortunately he didn't last very long allowing 4 goals in the first period alone. Marty Biron then took over allowing just one goal on 22 shots the rest of way. However the Flyers themselves could score only once themselves the rest of the way as well in a disappointing loss. Early in the 1st period Micheal Cammalleri scored for a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later Olli Jokinen scored for a 2-0 Flames lead. Late in the period Jokinen scored again for a 3-0 lead. A few minutes later Jordan Leopold scored for a 4-0 lead. Early in the 3rd period Mike Knuble finally put the Flyer's on the board, cutting the lead to 4-1. Finally late in the 3rd period Craig Conroy scored for a 5-1 lead to put the Flyers away for good as if they weren't finished already. So the Orange and Black drop to 34-19-10 overall but remain 4th in the Eastern conference.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils continued spring training with a matchup against the upcoming WBC's team USA. featuring Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins. Kyle Kendrick got the start went 2 and 2/3rds innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits as Chipper Jones slammed a 3 run homer in a 9-6 team USA victory. Oh well you can't win them all.

FLYERS NEWS

The NHL trade deadline was tonight and the Flyers made a few last minute moves. First they sent Scottie Upshall and 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft to the Phoenix Coyotes for big fighting forward Dan Carcillo who currently leads the NHL in penalty minutes with 174. Then they sent a 5th round draft pick to the San Jose Sharks for veteran defenseman Kyle Mclaren. Other than more penalty minutes and maybe some future potential there isn't much that Carcillo adds to the team. Mclaren who has been nursing a knee injury apparently, has spent just about all season down in the AHL and for now at least will stay there, as he joins the Phantoms. He could provide the Flyers which some much needed help on defensive help down the line, but for now he doesn't help at all. So on the whole the Flyers didn't really get anything significant at the deadline. If nothing else though trading Upshall does at least free up cap space, so that Flyers can now at least move players, like say Claude Giroux back and forth between the Phantoms and the NHL without having to worry about the cap. Plus even without Upshall the Flyers still have more than enough scoring with Scott Hartnell, Gagne, Richards, Carter, and a finally healthy Danny Briere among others.

PHILLIES NEWS

Cole "Hollywood" Hamels the reigning world series and NLCS mvp got his first start of the spring today against the upcoming WBC's Team Canada and tossed two scoreless innings in a 9-2 Phils win. Apparently rust doesn't apply to Hollywood. He's already in midseason form.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers traveled to Boston tonight for a matchup with the Eastern conference leading Bruins. The goaltender carousel continued as Antero Niittymaki got the start in goal and again he looked like the better of the two saving 22 of the 24 shots he faced. Meanwhile, Simon Gagne scored twice in the 3rd period to lead the Flyers to victory. Late in the first period Patrice Bergeron scored for a 1-0 Boston lead. Early in the 2nd period Scottie Upshall scored to knot it up at 1. Early in the 3rd period Gagne scored his first for a 2-1 lead. A few minutes later Mike Knuble made it 3-1. Finally with just under 4 minutes to play Gagne scored his second to just about seal the deal, as the Flyers went up 4-1. Stephane Yelle then scored for Boston with just under a minute to play to cut it to 4-2, but it was too little too late as the Flyer hung on to win by that same score. So the Orange and Black improve to 34-18-10 for 78 points overall and remain 4th in the Eastern conference.

EAGLES NEWS

Well the Eagles totally ignored top free agents T.J Houshmanzedah and Derrick Ward and they have both now signed with other teams, Houshmanzedah with the Seahawks and Ward with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tra Thomas also seems to be headed out of town as the Eagles still have not really made any serious effort to get him back. All that said, I just want to stay I am disgusted with the Eagles front office right now. Perhaps Joe Banner and Andy Reid know something we don't but right now they seem to have zero committment to winning. It is just beginning to feel more and more like last season may have been their last hurrah to win a Super Bowl with Donovan Mcnabb and now they've decided to just wind down his last years, save as much cap room as possible and stock up again with a Kevin Kolb or some other new young quarterback at the helm. Of course that would be assuming they actually did have some master plan. Perhaps they never really had a plan after all. Perhaps all they have ever really cared about is maintaing cap space and staying competitive. Winning championships was always then just a bonus for them. Well it's not just a bonus for thus so that's it. It's time to take a stand in the name of every Eagles fan who's flipped the bird at the TV after an Eagles' loss in the last 49 years. It's time for you to get mad. So stand up with me, open your windows, stick your heads out, and yell I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!

SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers welcomed the New Orleans Hornets to the Wachovia center tonight for an intriguing matchup. The Sixers fell behind early this time and nearly rallied back as Andre Iguodala scored 30 and Andre Miller dropped 28, but it was not enough. The Hornets shot 62% from beyond the arc and that was just too much for the Sixers to overcome. Early on the Hornets jumped out to a 7 point lead with the score 21-14 after a quarter of play. In the 2nd quarter the Sixers rallied back to cut the lead to one at the half with the score 46-45. By the 4th quarter New Orleans had the lead back out to 4 with the score 71-67. Finally in the 4th quarter New Orleans continued to keep a nose in front eventually holding off the Sixers to win by 7 with the final score 98-91. So the Sixers again drop under .500 and back down to 7th in the Eastern conference at 29-30 overall.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils continued spring training today with two games against the Blue Jays. In the A game which features the guys who are already on the roster, Ryan Howard slammed a 2 run homer and Raul Ibanez doubled twice to lead the Phils to a 12-7 win. In the B game which features the guys fighting for a roster spot, Marcus Giles drove in a run to help lead the Phils to a 2-1 win. So the Phils bats are heating up now this spring which is always a good sign.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers traveled to New Jersey for a key matcup with Devils who currently sit a top the Atlantic division just ahead of the Flyers. Antero Niittymaki started the last game in goal so it figures that Marty Biron got the start tonight and he was solid saving 39 of the 42 shots he faced. Unfortunately his opponent future hall of famer Marty Brodeur was spectacular saving all 27 shots he faced for his 100th career shutout. Early in the first period Jamie Langenbrunner made it 1-0 Devils. Early in the 2nd period Brian Gionta made it 2-0 Devils. Annoyingly Early in the 3rd period Johnny Oduya scored for a 3-0 Devils lead which of course was the final score. So the Flyers drop to 33-18-10 overall but remain 4th in the Eastern conference.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils continued with spring training today with a matchup against the division rival Atlanta Braves. Brett Myer got his first start of the spring and allowed just 2 runs on 3 hits in 3 innings of work. That was apparently good enough for a 7-3 Phils win to even their spring record at 2-2.
