PHILLIES NEWS

Cole Hamels was masterful this afternoon, allowing just 1 run on 7 hits while striking out 5 in a complete game 2-1 victory over the Giants. Both Phils runs came in the first inning with Hunter Pence lining an RBI single to right field, and Chase Utley scoring on an error by Pablo Sandoval and a passed ball by Eli Whiteside. The win is the Phils 9th in a row and 74th overall and moves them to a ridiculous 9.5 games up in the NL East. Not bad for the 1st week of August.

Vance Worley shutdown the Giants again, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6. Meanwhile, after trailing 1-0 for 3 innings the Phils exploded for 9 runs the rest of the way. Homers by John Mayberry Jr. and Shane Victorino plus a fielder's choice in the 4th inning helped the Phils charge ahead 4-1. Then in the 5th Placido Polanco ripped an RBI single for a 5-1 lead. Next in the 6th inning Brian Schneider and Jimmy Rollins both collected RBI singles, plating another 3 runs for an 8-2 lead and prompting Giants' reliever Ramon Ramirez to plunk Shane Victorino in the back which in turn triggered a benches clearing braw. Fortunately no one was hurt and nothing serious happened. The fired up Phils did a run in the 7th on a Hunter Pence solo shot, but that would end the fireworks for the night, as the Phils won easily 9-2.

Cliff Lee struck out 8 and allowed just 7 hits in a complete game shutout as the Phils opened their weekend set in San Fran with a 3-0 win. Hunter Pence and John Mayberry both slammed solo homers and Pence added a late RBI double to account for the runs. If only they were all this easy.

Roy Halladay did not have his best stuff, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits while striking out 7 in 7 innings, but for once less than his best was good enough, as the Phils racked up 8 runs on 12 hits to power to victory. Ryan Howard provided most of the offense with a 2 run double to cap off a 4 run 2nd inning and a 2 run blast in the 6th inning that gave the Phils the lead for good at 8-6. Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, and Hunter Pence also had an RBI each to round out the scoring. Of all people, Brad Lidge actually wound up getting the save, his first of the season thus far, with a perfect 9th inning. Ryan Madson would have closed it out but his wife just had baby so he was not available. Anyway the win was the 6th in a row and 71st of the season for the Phils who now head to San Fran for a key 4 game set.

EAGLES NEWS

It was a rough day at camp for the Birds as Trevor Laws went down with a knee injury and Mike Patterson suffered a seizure and had to be rushed to the hospital. That essentially left Antonio Dixon as the only DT on the field. So the later in the day the Birds signed veteran DTs Anthony Hargrove and Derek Landri to fill out the roster for now.

PHILLIES NEWS

Ryan Howard blasted 2 home runs and Kyle Kendrick tossed 8 scoreless innings while striking out a career high 7 to lead the Phils over the Rockies again 5-0. Hunter Pence also collected his first RBI as a Phil with an RBI double in the 1st, Raul Ibanez stayed hot singling and scoring in 4th inning on a sac fly by Brian Schneider, and Jimmy Rollins continued to lead the way with a walk and a run scored in the 1st inning. Aside from Kendrick, the only other pitcher used by the Phils in this one was David Herndon who threw a scoreless 9th inning to seal the 5-0 win. With the win the Phils now have 70 on the season and now lead the NL East by 8 games over the scuffling Braves.

EAGLES NEWS

The Eagles continued their busy offseason late this afternoon, signing RB Ronnie Brown, veteran OT Ryan Harris, and veteran S Jarrad Page. All three signings provide some depth that the Eagles needed, thanks to injuries and lack of experience at the respective positions.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils jetted out to Colorado to begin the month of August with a road trip. Tonight wasn't their best but in the end they showed again that their confidence is now at it's highest. Cole Hamels allowed just 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5 in 6 innings but that was only good enough for a no decision. That's because in those 6 innings the Phils managed 0 runs of their own. Finally in the 7th, Raul Ibanez ripped an RBI double to cut it to 2-1, but Colorado answered with a run in their half of the 7th and the Phils eventually found themselves down 3-1 with 2 outs and 1 on in the 9th. Up stepped John Mayberry Jr and boy did he deliver. After falling behind 1-2, he worked the count to 3-2, fouled 2 pitches and then sent Huston Street's 3rd 3-2 offering to the seats in the left to tie things at 3. Later in the 10th Shane Victorino led off with a solo bomb to put the Phils ahead 4-3. From there Ryan Madson picked up the save in the bottom of the 10th to move the Phils to 69-39 overall and 7 games up in the NL East. Not bad for August 1st.

EAGLES NEWS

The Eagles and 1st round pick Danny Watkins finally agreed today to a 4 year $7.937 million deal. With Watkins in tow the Birds now have all of their 2011 draft picks under contract. Which leaves getting Desean Jackson into camp, the business left for the Birds to attend this offseason. In other Birds news, the Broderick Bunkley trade to the Browns apparently fell apart, so the Eagles instead sent Bunkley to the Broncos for a 2013 draft pick.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils continued their winning ways this afternoon. Vance Worley seemed to run out of gas towards the end of his outing, but did his job, allowing just 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 7. Early on Raul Ibanez launched a solo homer in the 2nd inning and Jimmy Rollins ripped a 2 run single in the 5th inning for a 3-2 lead. That might have been enough to win but Worley fell off in 6th and the Phils found themselves down 5-3 heading into the 8th. There with 2 out and 1 on Ibanez crushed his 2nd homer of the day to tie things at 5 and effectively force extra innings. There in the 10th, Ibanez struck again with a 1 out double to score Hunter Pence for the 6-5 win. With the win the Phils move to 68-39 overall and 6 games up in the NL East.

EAGLES NEWS

The Eagles stayed busy signing veteran OL Evan Mathis, formerly of the Bengals. While not a headline grabbing move like everything else the Eagles have done this offseason, it is an important move for the Birds, that gives them the OL depth they needed, considering 1st round pick Danny Watkins hasn't been signed yet and Winston Justice is currently being held out of practice with a bum knee.
