PHILLIES NEWS

After scoring 8 runs last night the Phils bats took a little siesta this afternoon before waking a up a little too late to steal a win. Kyle Kendrick got the start and was decent, allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits. However, he did walk 2 and although he had only thrown 64 pitches Charlie Manuel made the decision to remove after just 5 innings. It's been a struggle lately for Kendrick so Charlie was probably looking get Kyle out of there on a high note and instill some confidence in him.

Anyway at the time the Phils slumbering offense had not score a single run and desperately needed the bullpen to keep the score 2-0. David Herndon, Antonio Bastardo, and Jose Contreras did get through the 6th, but Contreras ran out of gas in the 7th and J.C Romero could not bail him out, without two more runs for the Mets. Down 4-0 in the 8th the Phils finally woke up with RBI singles by Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard plating 3 runs to cut the lead to 4-3. Then in the 9th Mike Sweeney slapped a pinch double with 1 out and was replaced by pinch runner John Mayberry Jr. Unfortunately, Wilson Valdez and Carlos Ruiz both grounded out and the Mets had scratched out a 4-3 win. With the loss the Phils at 82-61 drop back into a 1st place tie with the Braves.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils opened a weekend series in the New York tonight as Roy Halladay looked to continue his winning ways against the Mets. He wasn't as sharp as usual but he was good enough, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5 in a solid 7 and 2/3rd's innings. Meanwhile the Phils offense continued its tear and Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard continued to be the leading men. In the 2nd Ruiz slapped an RBI single and Wilson Valdez hit into the rare run scoring double play to put the Phils up 2-0. After Roy uncharacteristically coughed up the lead in the 3rd, the Phils came right back in the 4th. Ryan Howard slammed a solo shot, Halladay himself lined a 2 run single with the bases loaded and Shane Victorino followed Halladay with another RBI single for a 6-3 lead.

Later in the 7th, Chase Utley pulled a solo homer, and Howard doubled and scored as Wilson Valdez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push the lead to 8-3. Halladay did allow the Mets to tack on one more run in the home half of the 8th ,but it was too little too late. After Roy Halladay left with 2 out in the 8th, Chad Durbin and combined with Ryan Madson to finish off New York and 8-4 win. Once again the Braves won as well so Halladay's 18th win of the season simply keep the Phils 1 game up in the NL East.

The Birds start a new season Sunday at the Link as Aaron Rodgers and the Packers come to town. Few teams would have been a tougher opening match up than the Packers so it could be a rough start to the season for the Birds and interesting first test for the Eagles young defense.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils completed their series with the Marlins, and a stretch of 24 games in 23 days with a bang tonight. Cole Hamels was brilliant again tossing 7 scoreless innings on just 4 hits to run his scoreless streak to 25 straight innings. Meanwhile, Ryan Howard continued his September magic going 3 for 5 with a homer and 6 RBIs to lead a 10 run effort by the men in red pinstripes. In the 1st, he slapped a 2 run single. In the 4th with the Phils already ahead 4-0 he crushed a 3 run homer to push the lead 7-0. It was his 250th career homer, which makes him the fastest in history to 250 HRs. Finally in the 7th he slapped another RBI single to give the Phils a resounding 10-0 lead. However, just when it seemed like the Fish were fried things turned.

Nate Robertson came on to pitch the 8th inning and struggled mightily against his former team, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits. Then David Herndon replaced him and allowed another run before finally getting out of the inning. Just like that the lead was down to 10-6 and the Marlins had new life. Fortunately, Charlie Manuel did the smart thing and brought in Ryan Madson to close it out in the 9th. He probably would have brought in Brad Lidge instead but he's still sidelined for now with elbow pain. Anyway Madson issued a walk for the 2nd night in a row but still got through the 9th without much trouble and the Phils had their 81st win of the season. They remain .5 games up in the NL East as the Braves also won today.

PHILLIES NEWS

Coming into tonight the Phils had a chance to reclaim first place for the first time since May. They just needed a win over the Marlins and for the Braves to lose to the Pirates. The Braves obliged with their 2nd straight loss to the lowly Pirates. So it was up to the Phils to come through against Florida. Joe Blanton got the start and was solid, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5 in 6 and 1/3rd innings, but thanks to him the Phils fell behind early 3-1. In the 4th Raul Ibanez slugged a solo homer to cut it to 3-2. Then in the 5th Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard each slammed solo homers and Ibanez slapped a 2 out RBI single to put the Phils ahead 5-3.

In the 7th with the lead down to 5-4 a sac fly by Jimmy Rollins and a triple by Ibanez plated 2 more runs and pushed the lead to 7-4. The way the Phils bullpen had been performing you would think that would be enough to grab the win but Jose Contreras could not get through the 8th. Ryan Madson replaced him to get the final out in the inning, but instead threw a wild pitch that allowed Florida to tie it up at 7. Just when it seemed Florida had all the momentum, Victorino ripped a 2 out single in the 8th, stole second, and scored on a single by Placido Polanco to put the Phils back ahead 8-7. Despite walking a batter Madson got through the 9th and their 8-7 win and first place in the NL East again, .5 games ahead of the Braves. There's still a long way to go though.

PHILLIES NEWS

Thanks to another game that was washed out earlier this season and the Phils and Marlins engaged in a Labor Day, day - night doubleheader. In the day game Vance Worley got his first career start and was solid, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5 in 5 innings. Unfortunately he got no run support as the Phils just came out flat offensively. Somehow Worley and the bullpen managed to keep them in it with the score 2-0 through 7. Unfortunately Chad Durbin and Mike Zagurski each allowed late runs in the 8th and 9th as the Fish rolled to a 7-0 lead. Finally in the home half of the 9th, Jayson Werth singled home Ryan Howard to at least avert the shutout but that would be all the Phils would get as they fell 7-1.

In the night game Roy Oswalt toughed out 7 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 7. The Phils meanwhile, only scored in 2 innings but in the end that was just enough. In the 2nd inning, Carlos Ruiz walked in one run, Shane Victorino singled in a second run, Placido Polanco doubled for 2 more runs, and finally Chase Utley singled to score Polanco for a 5-1 lead. Later in the 5th with the lead down to 5-4, Utley singled to score Polanco again and Raul Ibanez doubled in Utley to extend the lead to 7-4. Thanks to Oswalt, Ryan Madson, and finally Brad Lidge in the 9th, that was enough to win the night cap 7-4. With the win and a loss by the Braves earlier in the day the Phils are now just .5 games down in the NL East. They're also now just 1.5 games up in the wild card race.

PHILLIES NEWS

The roll finally ended for the Phils this afternoon. Kyle Kendrick was touched up for 5 runs on 7 hits in just 4 innings of work and the Phils offense never quite clicked. Thanks to a stellar performance by the Phils bullpen, allowing just 1 run in the final 5 innings, the Phils at least had a chance to win this one but they just couldn't come up with enough offense. They had chances they just couldn't get that one hit they needed to take advantage of them.

Carlos Ruiz ripped a 2 run double in the 2nd inning to the give the Phils their only runs of the day but they had other chances. Chase Utley was stranded after a leadoff single in the 3rd inning. In 5th Utley grounded into a double play and Ryan Howard struck out with a runner on first. With 2 out in the 7th Jimmy Rollins singled but was stranded when Utley popped up. Finally in the 8th, Howard and Shane Victorino both walked and then moved up to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch to put 2 runners in scoring position for Ben Francisco. Francisco had a good long at bat but just couldn't time Jon Axford's pitches in the late afternoon shadows as he flied out to end the inning. From there the Phils went down in order in the 9th and the Brew Crew had avoided a sweep with a 6-2 win. Fortunately the Braves lost today as well so the Phils remain 1 game back in the NL East.

EAGLES NEWS

As expected the Birds resigned Max Jean Gilles today so their 53 man roster is set. In addition to bringing back Gilles the Birds also signed 5 players to their practice squad. They are DT Jeff Owens, RB Martell Mallet, WR Chad Hall, G/T Dallas Reynolds, and C A.Q Shipley.
