Cole Hamels was very good as usual, allowing just 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 8, but it wasn't enough as the Phils managed just 1 run on 4 hits in a 4-1 loss to the A's. The Phils had chances to score late in the game but just couldn't cash in. First with the Phils down 2-1 in the 8th, Ross Gload slapped a 1 out double to the gap in left, but pinch runner Micheal Martinez was stranded after Jimmy Rollins struck out, Placido Polanco walked and Chase Utley grounded out. Later down 4-1 in the 9th, the Phils put 2 on with 1 out for Dom Brown, but he grounded into a double play to end the game.

PHILLIES NEWS
Vance Worley tossed 6 shutout innings and Ben Francisco plated the only run of the night with a 2 out RBI single in the 9th to lift the Phils to a 1-0 win over the A's as they returned home from their road trip.
FLYERS NEWS
With the 8th pick in the draft, acquired in the Carter trade, the Flyers selected Canadian center Sean Couterier. If not for injuries he could have been the #1 pick, so getting him in the 8th slot is a bit of a steal. Might he be the new center, the Orange and Black needed? Probably not yet.

PHILLIES NEWS
Roy Oswalt was forced to leave after just 2 innings, with back soreness and the Phils never recovered dropping their series closer to the Cardinals 12-2. Oswalt was okay before he left, as was Kyle Kendrick in relief as they held the Cardinals to just 6 runs through 6. Ryan Howard's RBI single finally put the Phils on the board in the 6th, cutting the lead to 5-1 at the time. That was as close as they would get as Dannys Baez allowed 7 runs in the 8th to finish the loss.
FLYERS NEWS
The Flyers stunned hockey world this afternoon trading away captain Mike Richards and leading scorer, Jeff Carter within minutes of each other. Carter went to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 8th overall pick in this year's draft and young winger Jakub Voracek. Richards was sent to the L.A Kings for prospect Braydon Schenn, winger Wayne Simmonds, and a 2nd round pick in the next year's draft. This is an interesting move for a team said to be trying to win now, not later, but these 3 are all intriguiging prospects and could well replace Carter and Richards. Plus, with the cap space cleared by the traded the Flyers were able to come terms with Ilya Bryzgalov on a 9 year $50 million deal. They also probably have the space now to re-sign Ville Leino if they so choose, as well as fill their new need for big center, Brad Richards anyone? Still Bryzgalov better deliver a Cup or Flyers fans will look back on this day for a long time for all the wrong reasons.
SIXERS NEWS
The Sixers biggest need this off season was size inside and they addressed that tonight in the NBA draft. There was a lot of speculation coming into the night the Sixers would trade Andre Iguodala to move up in the draft but it didn't happen. Instead they stayed put and with the 16th pick in draft they selected USC center Nikola Vucevic. Vucevic averaged a double double this past season for the Trojans and was blocking a shot a game so he should help the Sixers in the post. He does probably need to get a little bigger though. It's been a while since the Sixers last had a 2nd round pick, but they actually did tonight and with 50th pick in the draft they selected Temple forward/center Lavoy Allen. The Owls all time leading rebounder, Allen has first round talent but many question his desire which is why he dropped to 2nd round. Considering Tony Battie probably won't be back with the Sixers next season and Mo Speights is awful defensively, Allen's strength, there's a good chance he makes the team out of training camp.

For the 2nd successive start Cliff Lee went the distance, allowing no runs on 6 hits while striking out 3 in a sublime performance. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard each homered in support of Lee and the Phils cruised to a 4-0 win.

PHILLIES NEWS
The Phils rebounded from a tough series in Seattle and answered all the detractors about their offensive production all in one inning tonight St. Louis. Despite 6 innings of 1 run from Roy Halladay the Phils appeared on their way to another loss before the Cardinal bullpen imploded in the 8th inning thanks some rare patience at the plate displayed by the Phils. The inning actually started with an easy flyout by Jimmy Rollins, then Shane Victorino singled, Chase Utley walked, and Ryan Howard and Placido Polanco were both hit by pitch to push across a game tying run. Then Raul Ibanez struck out and just when it seemed St.Louis might limit the damage, Ben Francisco slapped a pinch RBI single to continue the inning and then all heck broke loose. Carlos Ruiz walked, Micheal Martinez walked, Rollins singled, Victorino walked, Utley singled, Howard singled, and finally Wilson Valdez flied out to end the inning. In all the Phils scored 9 runs in the inning on just 5 hits, none of them extra base hits. Antonio Bastardo and David Herndon finished off the 10-2 win from there.

PHILLIES NEWS
As usual Cole Hamels pitched more than well enough to win, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6 in 6 and 1/3rd innings. Unfortunately it didn't really matter on this Father's day afternoon as the Phils themselves managed just 3 hits and no runs scored. Ryan Howard had 2 of the 3 hits but there was no one on base for him. In the end the 3 hits weren't enough as the Phils fell to the Mariners 2-0.
