The NBA all-star Slam dunk contest was tonight in Phoenix. After 4 dunks Dwight 'Superman' Howard the defending champion, was dethroned by the champion from a a couple years ago, the Knicks Nate Robinson. Ironically, a dunk in which he jumped over Howard himself, was likely what gave Robinson the win.

SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers welcomed the Memphis Grizzlies to the Wachovia center tonight for their final game before the all-star break. They were looking to head into the break on a high note with their 3rd straight win. Thanks to some late game heroics by the Andre's Miller and Iguodala, the Sixers rallied late to secure victory over the lowly Grizzlies. Offensively, Miller led the way with 24 points and 9 assists, while Iggy added 18, and Thaddeus Young contributed 12, as the Sixers shot a blistering 51 % from the field and committed just 9 turnovers. Defensively, as usual the Sixers weren't great, but they were more than adequate forcing 22 Grizzlies turnovers, including 10 steals. Early on the Sixers led by 8 with the score 26-18 heading into the 2nd quarter. By the half Memphis had cut the lead to 4 with the score 41-37. The Sixers were still clinging to a 5 point lead heading into the 4th quarter with the score 64-59. In the 4th Memphis forged ahead for a bit, then the Sixers pushed back ahead before Memphis tied it at 87. Then with 26 seconds to play Iggy hit a runner to put the Sixers up for good 89-87. The Sixers then sunk a couple of free throws to close out a 91-87 win. So the Sixers move to 27-24 overall tying them for the moment with Detroit and Miami and thanks to tiebreakers moving them into 5th in the Eastern conference.

SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers were looking to stay above .500 once and for all tonight as they welcomed the Phoenix Suns to the Wachovia center. Although the Sixers weren't dominating at any one point in the game, they were steady throughout. They slowly increased their lead quarter to quarter until they had rolled to an easy win against the road weary Suns. Defensively, the Sixers had another strong night, as not a single Sun managed to score 20 or more, as the Sixers crushed Phoenix on the boards 54-41 and racked up 7 blocks and 8 steals. Offensively, the Sixers did a good job taking advantage of the Suns weariness running up and down the court. Thaddeus Young led the way with 25 points while Andre Iguodala added 22, and Maurice Speights had a career night with a career high 24 points and 7 rebounds. Who needs Elton, when you have Speights. Anyway the Sixers took an early 5 point lead after a quarter of play and never let go. By the half they were up by 11 with the score 55-44. By the 4th quarter they were up by 14 with the score 80-66. Finally in the 4th quarter with mostly benchwarmers on the floor, the Sixers continued to boost their lead until they had won by 17 with the final score 108-91. So the Sixers move to 2 games above .500 at 26-24 overall, but remain 7th in the Eastern conference.
