Hunter Pence made his first start as a Phil and collected his first hit as a Phil, but he wasn't the big story tonight. Instead Ryan Howard, finally protected in the lineup, stole the show, going 4 for 4 with a homer and 3 RBIs, while picking up his 1,000th career with a double in the 3rd inning. Jimmy Rollins also continued his hot hitting with 2 hits, including a homer, and 2 runs scored. Meanwhile, Cliff Lee kept the Pirates mostly in check, allowing just 4 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 11, in 7 and 2/3rd's innings. From there Antonio Bastardo and Ryan Madson combined for the save as the Phils held off the Pirates 7-4.

EAGLES NEWS
The Eagles continued their busy offseason today signing DT Cullen Jenkins to a 5 year deal. Jenkins, the former Packer, immediately fills the Eagles void for a pass rushing DT. One they have really had since Andy Harmon retired over 10 years ago. They also traded DT Broderick Bunkley to the Cleveland Browns for a 5th round pick in the 2012 draft and re-signed LB Akeem Jordan to a 1 year deal.

PHILLIES NEWS
What a day it was for the Phils today with wins on and off the field. First off the field they sent prospects Jared Cosart, Jonathan Singleton, Josh Zeid, and a player to be named later to the Astros for OF Hunter Pence. Pence is an immediate upgrade to the Phils lineup and should be penciled right in to right field and the 4th spot in the lineup. Meaning Dom Brown is probably headed to back to AAA for now. Meanwhile, while all that was going on behind the scenes, the Phils had a game to win against the Pirates tonight and boy did they. Roy Halladay threw 7 scoreless innings, Jimmy Rollins collected a homer, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored, and Chase Utley fell just a double short of the cycle with a homer and 4 RBIs as the overpowered Pittsburgh 10-3. Simply put when you spot Roy Halladay an 8-0 you're not going to win too often.
EAGLES NEWS
The Eagles shocked tonight everyone by signing CB Nnamdi Asomugha to a 5 year $60 million deal. Asomugha is arguably the best CB in the NFL right now, and with him, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Asante Samuel all on the same roster the Eagles instantly have the most formidable secondary in the league. The Eagles could probably still use LB or a DT to round out the roster and there is some talk that Samuel could be traded to get one or the other, but I don't see it happening. In addition to Asomugha the Birds also finalized 1 year deals today with TE Donald Lee, WR Johnnie Lee Higgins, and QB Vince Young. Not bad for a day's work.

PHILLIES NEWS
Tim Lincecum tossed 6 scoreless innings as the Giants shut down the Phils again 4-1, marking the Phils first series loss in 9 tries. All told they managed just 1 run on 6 hits on the night. Chase Utley's RBI double in the 7th inning was all that averted a shutout. Still, the Phils managed to stay in it until the bitter end, thanks 2 and 2/3rd's scoreless innings from the Bullpen. Unfortunately, with 2 on and 2 out in the 7th, Ryan Howard grounded out to end the Phils best threat the remainder of the game and that was about all she wrote.
EAGLES NEWS
The Eagles had a busy day today. First they agreed to a 5 year $28 million deal with Jason Babin, re-uniting him with D-line coach Jim Washburn. Babin registerted 12.5 sacks last season with the Titans, but had little impact for any other team, including the Eagles, in previous seasons. Hopefully Washburn can keep him playing at a high level, in which case he'll fill the Eagles need for a left defensive end to team with Trent Cole and be a perfect stopgap until 2010 1st round pick Brandon Graham can get healthy enough to show what he can do. Not long after that the Eagles executed a bigger move, sending Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals for CB Antonio Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2012 2nd round pick. Cromartie was a pro-bowler 2 years ago but struggled last season on very poor Cardinals team. If he can return to his pro-bowl form from 2009 the Eagles will be set at CB for years to come.

PHILLIES NEWS
Cole Hamels was brilliant again, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 6 over 7 and 2/3rd's innings, but it wasn't enough as the Phils fell to the Giants, 2-1. 2 San Francisco miscues and the fleet feet of Shane Victorino accounted for Phils only run with 1 out in the 7th inning. They had chances in the final 2 innings, with Jimmy Rollins stranded at 2nd in the 8th, and Ryan Howard coming this close to getting a hold of a Brian Wilson pitch, but could not come up with the equalizer so it's back to the drawing board for the Phils as they continue their series with the Giants tomorrow night.

Vance Worley tossed his first career complete game, allowing just 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 5. Meanwhile his teammates put on a power display, stunning the visiting Giants, with one blow after another. In the 1st inning, Ryan Howard doubled and Raul Ibanez blased a 3 run shot for a 4-1 lead. In the 4th inning John Mayberry Jr. lined a solo homer into the seats for a 5-1 lead. In the 6th Chase Utley lined a ball into the gap that got by Andres Torres and rolled back along the wall just long enough for Chase race all the way around the bases for the rare inside the park homer and a 6-1 lead. Finally in the 8th inning, Ryan Howard crushed a solo homer to dead center to cap off a 7-2 thumping of San Francisco. Considering what the Giants did to the Phils last year, that's a pretty good way to start the season series against them.
EAGLES NEWS
On the first day of NFL free agency following the end of the lockout, the Eagles signed 10 rookie free agents, most notably West Virginia RB Noel Devine and Florida punter and Ray Guy award winner, Chas Henry, who could actually replace Sav Rocca if the Eagles don't re-sign him.

PHILLIES NEWS
Cliff Lee took the mound this afternoon, reportedly with the flu, and was no match for San Diego, as they roughed him up for 5 runs on 10 hits. The Phils followed with 5 scoreless innings in relief, including the return of Brad Lidge in a scoreless 8th . It was almost enough to help the Phils to a comeback win but they came up about a hit short. In the 4th inning, consecutive hits by Raul Ibanez, Dom Brown, and Carlos Ruiz cut it 5-3. Then in the 6th inning, Shae Victorino doubled and scored to cut it to 5-4 and was on 3rd with 2 outs before being stranded. Instead things went into the 9th with the Phils down a run and they had no answer for Heath Bell, as he clinched the 5-4 Padre victory.

PHILLIES NEWS
Roy Halladay rebounded nicely from his melt down in Chicago, allowing just 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out 8 in 8 strong innings this afternoon. Meanwhile, Ryan Howard returned to the starting lineup with a vengeance, collecting 2 hits and 2 runs scored, while Raul Ibanez chipped in with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs. All together it was enough for a 5-3 win, the Phils 10th straight win over the Padres. With the win the Phils move to 64-36 overall and 6 games up in the NL East.
