FLYERS NEWS

Flyers 7 Ducks 4
It Was Over When....
The first period ended. The Flyers spent most of the period on the power play and took advantage of it, scoring 5, yes that's right 5 goals in the period, all against overmatched Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastian Giguere.
The Game Puck Goes To....
Peter Forsberg, with a goal and an assist, Simon Gagne with a goal and an assist, Sami Kapanen with 2 goals, Mike Knuble with a goal and an assist, Geoff Sanderson with a goal and an assist, Joni Pitkanen with 2 assists, Randy Robitaille with 2 assists, and Petr Nedved with 2 assists.
The Stat Of The Game Is....
7, as in 7 goals on the night for the Flyers as a team. This is the first time all year that they have scored more than 4 goals in a game.
The Bottom Line Is....
No that score at the top of this report is not a typo, the Flyers actually won for a change, and boy did they win. I mean they scored 7 goals against the best defensive team in the league thus far. You'd think if the Flyers can do that, then why can't they can't do it every night and win every game. Unfortunately things don't quite work like that, but hey who knows maybe this means the Flyers can actually turn things around.

SIXERS NEWS

Sixers 96 Sonics 90
It Was Over When....
The 3rd quarter ended. The Sixers built up a 15 point lead at one point during the quarter and by the the time the 4th quarter began they still led by 13, which was enough to hold on for the win.
The Game Ball Goes To....
the two AIs. Allen Iverson scored 28 points, and Andre Iguodala had a near triple double with 12 points , 8 rebounds, and 9 assists.
The Stat Of The Game Is....
0, as in the sonics biggest lead on the night was zero, in other words they never once had the lead in this game, as the Sixers led all night long from start to finish.
The Bottom Line Is....
This is the way you start a road trip. You just go into the other guy's building and take care of business. I mean it's one thing to lead for an entire game when you're at home, but to do it when you're on the road, is a real testament to your team unity. In fact, it was pretty clear, from beginning to end that the Sixers were not intimidated by the pro-sonics crowd, and they never really let them get in the game. I just hope this is the start of another long winning streak for the Sixers, rather than just a blip on the radar screen like that the 3 game winning streak at the beginning the season.

Penguins 3 Flyers 2
It Was Over When....
Pittsburgh's rookie sensation Evgeni Malkin scored with just over 2:00 minutes left to play in the 3rd period to put the Penguins ahead for good at 3-2.
The Game Puck Goes To....
Pittsburgh's other wunderkind, Sidney Crosby who recorded their 1st goal of the night and assisted on Malkin's game winning score.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
3, as in 3 wins against the Flyers this season for the Penguins. Prior to this the Penguins had not beaten the Flyers three times in a season since 2000-2001.
The Bottom Line Is....
Once again the Flyers actually played farely well tonight, and once again they lost a hearbreaker on a late goal in the 3rd period. I don't know about you, but it seems increasingly evident to me that this team just isn't ready to win this season. Whether it's a lack of experience, or a dearth of heart and will to win, they are just not all put together right now. I mean at this point, if they can just somehow break even by the end of the season I'll be happy.

Eagles 27 Redskins 3
It Was Over When....
Redskins star running back Clinton Portis broke his right hand in the 1st quarter. Portis would not return for the remainder of the game and whatever chance the Redskins might have had to win this game was lost with him.
The Game Ball Goes To....
Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. Assuming the play calling duties for the first time this year,(usually head coach Andy Reid scripts and calls the plays) he made sure that the Eagles offense ran the ball more times than it passed it for the first time this season. In fact, the Eagles got the ball with just over 9:00 minutes left in the game and with their new found running game were able to completely run off the remaining time on the clock, without having to bring the defense back out on to the field.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
113, as in 113 rushing yards in the game for Eagles running back Brian Westbrook, and 139 as in 139 yards receiving for Eagles receiver Donte Stallworth. This is the first time all year the Eagles have had a 100 yard rusher and receiver in the same game, and just the second time all year that they have had a 100 yard rusher(it was Westbrook the other time too).
The Bottom Line Is....
All I can say is thank god the Eagles won this one and thank god for Marty Mornhinweg. The Eagles won this one because Mornhinweg was willing to run to the ball and balance out the offense with 3o runs and 29 passes. If they can keep up that kind of balance for the rest of the season, there is a good chance that they will make the playoffs. However it's not always going to be this easy so if the Eagles hope to make playoffs they're just going to have to keep at it. They just can't have anymore of the let downs they had in the 1st half of the season.

Sabres 5 Flyers 4 Final in OT
It Was Over When....
Daniel Briere scored his second goal of the night, just 21 seconds into the overtime period.
The Game Puck Goes To....
Well, it was going to go to Randy Robitaille who scored twice on the night and helped the Flyers take a 4-3 lead late in the 3rd period, but then Daniel Briere stepped in with just under 3:00 minutes to play and scored to tie it and then win it in overtime, so we'll have to give it to him instead.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
1, as in 1 point gained by the Flyers tonight to add to their league worst 7. Yes they lost, but they lost in overtime and as long you get to overtime you get 1 point, win or lose. So the Flyers now have 8 points on the season instead of 7. It's not a huge improvement but for this team it's a start.
The Bottom Line Is...,
This was actually a pretty good effort for the Flyers, considering they were without Peter Forsberg. Yes, they fell behind 3-0 as usual, but they kept at it and kept chipping away until they had the lead at 4-3 with just under 3 minutes to play, but of course you know the rest. Basically what I am saying is that even though this was a loss for the Flyers it was still an improvement over the way they have been playing, and who knows if they can keep playing like this, they might just be able to turn this thing around.

Nuggets 108 Sixers 101
It Was Over When....
Willie Green missed a potential game tying three pointer with the score at 104-101 Nuggets. Carmelo Anthony then sank a couple free throws at the other end of the court to effectively put it away.
The Game Ball Goes To....
Carmelo Anthony with 31 points, Andre Miller with 18 points and 9 assists, and Marcus Camby with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
6 for 20, as in only 6 for 20 shooting on the night for Allen Iveron. Although he did somehow still manage to score 21 points, it was still a subpar night for him, and you know what they say, as he goes so goes the Sixers, and that just held true tonight.
The Bottom Line Is....
Aaargh, what happened? I mean they were 3-0 and on top of the world, or at least the eastern conference, and now all of the sudden there 3-3, having lost three in a row. I'll, tell ya only the Sixers could start 3-0 and then go 0-3. I don't know, I guess this is just a bad year to be a philly sports fan, but who knows maybe the Sixers can put together another winning streak, when they return to action in 4 days.

Islanders 3 Flyers 1
It Was Over When....
Alexei Yashin scored his second goal of the night, with just under 5 minutes to play in the 2nd period. Yashin's second score gave the Islanders a 3-0 lead which they would never relinquish.
The Game Puck Goes To....
Alexei Yashin with 2 goals, Jason Blake with 2 assists, and goalie Rick Dipietro, even though it seems like just about anybody can hold the Flyers to only 1 goal these days.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
0, as in 0 goals in the first 2 periods for the Flyers. Simply put, if you want to win you have to score early and often, you just can't keep falling behind and expect to be able to come back and get the win in the 3rd period.
The Bottom Line Is....
Uggh, what's with this team. I mean this is 4 straight losses now, and there is no solution in sight. When are these guys going to wake up, and get serious. They have absolutely no heart right now, and there just doesn't seem to be anyone willing to step up and make play when they need it. They need to sit down and have a team meeting right now ,before this gets any worse, because it's going to before it gets any better.

It Was Over When....
Chris Bosh beat the shot clock with a three pointer with 6 seconds left in the game, and Andre Iguodala missed a three pointer to beat the final buzzer.
The Game Ball Goes To....
Chris Bosh with 29 points and 14 rebounds and T.J Ford with 11 points and 7 assists.
The Stat Of The Game Is....
17, as in 17 turnovers for the Sixers and 20.5 as in a 20.5 three point shooting percentage on the night for the Sixers as they once again struggled from behind the arc, and even Kyle Kolver went o for 2 from behind the arc.
The Bottom Line Is....
Well, last night was just a tough night for Sixers, but tonight was downright heartbreaking. I mean the Sixers could have and should have won this one, but in the end the night belonged to Chris Bosh. Seriously, who would have predicted that he would hit two three pointers on the night, including the one that ultimately sealed the win for the Raptors. Luckily, the Sixers have the day off tomorrow so you, I, and all the other Sixers fans out there have a day to get over this crushing blow, because we are all going to need it.

Pacers 97 Sixers 86
It Was Over When....
The Pacers hit three consecutive three pointers to start the 3rd period and take a 21 point lead which they would never relinquish.
The Game Ball Goes To....
Jermaine O'neal with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Al Harrington with 14 points and 8 rebounds.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
14.3 as in a 14.3 3 point shooting percentage for the Sixers on the night. Coming into tonight's game the Sixers were the top three point shooting team in the league by percentage, but tonight the shots didn't fall for them and they lost.
The Bottom Line Is....
Well, you knew the Sixers were going to lose a game sometime, and tonight seemed like it would be the night for it to happen. Ironically, the Sixers started 0-3 last year and beat the Pacers in their 4th game of the season for their 1st win. So maybe this loss is a good sign for the Sixers and the new and better direction this team seems to be going in. I just hope they can get back on the winning track tomorrow night against the Raptors.

Maple Leafs 4 Flyers 1
It Was Over When....
Alexei Ponikarovsky scored the Maple Leafs 3rd goal of the night with 4:oo minutes left to play in the 3rd period. It only made the score 3-1, but the way the Flyers have played this season you just knew it was going to be too much for them to overcome.
The Game Puck Goes To....
Alexei Ponikarovsky who assisted on the 2nd and eventual game winning goal for the Maple Goals, and as I said scored the clinching 3rd goal for the Maple Leafs.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
41, as in 41 shots on goal, and 7 as in power play chances for the Flyers. Incredibly after all those chances the Flyers came away with just 1 goal, which is simply inexplicable.
The Bottom Line Is....
Apparently the Flyers have forgotten how to score goals. They seem to know how to put shots on goal consistently , they just can't seem to put any of them in the goal. Now obviously part of that is good goaltending, but only to a certain extent. At some point you have to put some of the blame on the Flyers offense. I mean you have got to know what to do when you get the puck on net. You can't just thrown it in there, you have to keep at it until it's in the goal. Maybe it's youth and inexperience or maybe it's boredom and indifference, or maybe it's just a general lack of talent, but whatever it is they had better figure it out fast and start turning all those shots into goals because they are quickly running out of time to turn things around.

Sixers 107 Heat 98
It Was Over When....
Andre Iguodala hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the 4th quarter to put the Sixers up 17. Later in the period the Heat's Antoine Walker hit 3 consecutive 3 pointers to cut the lead to 10 but thanks to Iguodala's threes it was already too late.
The Game Ball Goes To....
Allen Iverson, with 31 points and 13 assists, Andre Iguodala with 20 points, 5 assists, and 7 rebounds, Chris Webber with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and once again Kyle Korver who came off the bench to score 22 points, including 5 consecutive three pointers.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
9 ,as in 9 consecutive three pointers hit by Kyle Kolver going back to Friday night. On Friday he hit 4 in a row against the Magic and today he hit 5 in a row against the Heat before missing one late in the 4th quarter.
The Bottom Line Is....
Hey, what I can say, the Sixers are 3-0 and there isn't a whole lot I can say about them that's bad. The defense was better today than it was on Friday, but it still wasn't great, it was just good enough. Basically what I am saying is that I am pleased with how the Sixers are doing right now, they aren't quite playing flawlessly just yet, but they are slowly getting there and I have a really good feeling about the rest of the season.

Capitals 5 Flyers 3
It Was Over When....
The first period ended. The Capitals scored 4 goals to take a 4-1 lead by the end of the period, and basically the Flyers never recovered.
The Game Puck Goes To....
The Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin and Ben Clymer who scored 2 goals each, including 3 of the Capitals 1st 4 goals.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
50, as in the save percentage for Flyers goalie Robert Esche on the night, in his 1 period of play before being replaced by Antero Niittymaki. Esche faced just 8 shots in the 1st period and allowed 4 of them to pass into the goal. In fact on the night the Capitals had just 19 shots on goal to the Flyers 36 and yet scored 5 goals to the Flyers 3. Basically the defense was good for the Flyers tonight, but the goaltending just wasn't.
The Bottom Line Is....
I hate to say it, but this is becoming a recurring theme for the Flyers this season. They fell behind early and never really came to life until the 3rd period and by then it was already too late. I would like to stay optimistic with this team, but the bottom line is they are fading fast and it doesn't appear that there is going be a light at the end of tunnel, any time soon.

Sixers 105 Magic 103
It Was Over When....
The buzzer sounded. Allen Iverson scored on a driving layup with 2.2 seconds left ,and Magic forward Grant Hill missed a jumper from 12 feet away at the buzzer, ending it in a win for the Sixers
The Game Ball Goes To....
Allen Iverson with 39 points and 10 assists, and Kyle Korver who came off the bench to score 28 points including 4 three pointers.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
23, as in 23 turnovers for the Magic on the night. In a game with 8 lead changes and 12 ties, this is what turned out to be the deciding difference between the two teams.
The Bottom Line Is....
Hey, the Sixers are 2-0, how about that, and you know what the last time they were 2-0, was back in 2001 when they started 10-0 and advanced all the way to the NBA finals. Now I am not saying that they are going to do that this year, but they could be headed to a good year. Yes ,the Sixers allowed the Magic to score 103 points while shooting over 50% from the field, but as I said they forced 23 Magic turnovers and found a way to win by scoring 105 points, while also shooting over 50% percent from the field and over 70 % from beyond the 3 point line. Usually if you can shoot that well, it doesn't matter how bad your defense is ,you are going to get a win. However, if the Sixers are to remain undefeated they will have to get back to what won them their season/home opener, team defense. So while I am pleased that they won, I just wish that they would keep at it on the defensive end a little more.

Lightning 5 Flyers 2
It Was Over When....
The Lightning's Vincent Lecavalier and Eric Perrin scored consecutive goals on the Flyers empty net with just over 2:oo minutes to play in the 3rd period, to put Tampa Bay up for good 5-2. Earlier in the period the Flyers had started a furious comeback cutting the lead to 3-2, but after going to the empty net in order to get the equalizer, they ran out of luck.
The Game Puck Goes To....
Lightning goalie Johann Holmqvist who had 30 saves on 32 shots for the night. Yes he allowed 2 goals, but in the new NHL 2 goals is nothing and if not for Holmqvist, the Flyers would have had their 2 goals one period earlier.
The Stat Of the Game Is....
0, as o goals in the first 2 periods for the Flyers. You just can't get off to such a slow start and expect to win. If the Flyers had scored even 1 goal in the first 2 periods, they might have had a chance to win this one.
The Bottom Line Is....
I don't know what it is, but for some reason the Lightning seem to bring out the worst in the Flyers and they did again tonight. The Lightning weren't even fresh, as they just played a game last night, and yet they still had enough to beat the Flyers. That goes to show, that the Flyers just aren't explosive enough right now, to consistently compete in every game, and I am not sure if they ever will be this season.

Sixers 88 Hawks 75
It Was Over When.....
Samuel Dalembert, after sealing consecutive defensive stands with a block and a rebound, dunked to put the Sixers up 86-71 with just under 5:00 minutes to play. The Hawks had cut the lead to as little as 10, at 81-71 with 6:07 to play, but Dalembert's dunk put the nail in their coffin.
The Game Ball Goes To.....
Allen Iverson with 32 points and 6 assists, Andre Iguodala with 15 points and 3 steals, Chris Webber with 8 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 blocks, and finally Samuel Dalembert with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
The Stat Of the Game Is.....
75, as in just 75 points on the night for the Hawks, and 33.3 as in a mere 33.3 team shooting percentage for the Hawks on the night. Yes the Hawks, are not very good team to begin with, but even so, these numbers really show just how committed the Sixers are to improving their defense.
The Bottom Line Is.....
This is the way you wanted to open the season if you are the Sixers. You get a win, and you get it because of your team defense, instead of your offense. Just by watching tonight's game you can see how much easier is to win a game with your defense, rather than to just outscore the other guy as the Sixers tried to do all last season. The Only question remaining for this team, as far as I am concerned, is can they keep it up. It's one thing to play great defense for one night, but it's another to do it for an entire season. Yes this was an encouraging win for the Sixers, but they still have a little ways to go to prove that they belong at the top of the Eastern conference, or at the very the least, the top of the Atlantic division. Who knows, if they can keep this up, they might just go farther than anyone expected them to.

Earlier today the Eagles made an interesting change to their roster. Cornerback Dexter Wynn who had been the Eagles kickoff returner, until Reno Mahe took over last week, was put on waivers. Now of course the Eagles had to replace him, so they signed free agent Cornerback William Peterson, or William James as he calls himself now, to a one year contract. You might remember Peterson er, James from his 2 seasons as the Giants starting cornerback, in which he recorded 199 tackles and 5 interceptions. Now, James hasn't played since last September because of a back injury, but hopefully he will be able to give the Eagles some more depth at cornerback, although I don't know how much he can help the Eagles out of there current funk, but who knows maybe he can help fire up the troops over the bye week.

Flyers 3 Blackhawks 0
It Was Over When.....
Peter Forsberg stepped on the ice. The Flyers Captain score just over 7:00 minutes into the game to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead which they would never relinquish.
The Game Puck Goes To.....
Peter Forsberg who scored 2 spectacular goals on the night, and Goalie Robert Esche who shutout the Blackhawks with 26 saves, for his first win of the year.
The Stat of The Game Is.....
0, as in 0 goals scored by the Blackhawks on the night. This is the 3rd consecutive game in which the Blackhawks have failed to score a goal.
The Bottom Line Is.....
This was a nice win for the Flyers but it was against the Blackhawks who are arguably the only team that has played worst than the Flyers have this season. Also the only goal scorers for the Flyers were Peter Forsberg, and Simon Gagne, on empty net goal. Generally, these are the guys that you expect to score goals on a daily basis, but it's the Kyle Calders and the Jeff Carters who have to score if the Flyers are to turn things around. Until they do, and until the Flyers get a win against a team that's not struggling like the Blackhawks or the Thrashers for that matter, I will continue to say what I am going to say now, nice win guys, but you could do better.

SIXERS NEWS

As promised this is a quick report on how the Sixers fared during their preseason and thus where they are heading going into the season. The Sixers final record for the preseason was 3-4, but as usual that doesn't matter, so let't talk about what does. As a team the Sixers averaged about 100 points scored per game and the usual suspects Allen Iverson, Chris Webber, and Andre Iguodala helped the team to do so. One pleasant surprise, if any, was the solid play of Kyle Korver who consistently put about 20 points a game despite coming off the bench most nights. However, despite all their scoring prowess, defense was a problem for them, just as it was all last season, and just as it will likely be all this season. As they were scoring about 100 points a game they were also giving up about 100 points a game, and that usually doesn't add to much success. If the Sixers are to even just reach playoffs this season their defense will have to be vastly improved from last year, and judging from the preseason it isn't so I just can't see this team going any farther than it has been the last few seasons, 38-44 and fighting for the 8th playoff spot.

Jaguars 13 Eagles 6
It Was Over When.....
The Jaguars recovered a last ditch onsides kick attempt by David Akers, to seal the win.
The Game Ball Goes To.....
The Jaguars offensive line, which allowed Fred Taylor and Maurice Drew to rush for a combined 209 yards and 1 touchdown, and allowed just 1 sack of QB David Garrard. It also helped the Jaguars dominate the field position all day long, as The Eagles were continually starting drives deep in their own territory.
The Stat Of the Game Is.....
142 and 85, as in 142 yards passing and 85 yards rushing for a combined 227 yards for the Eagles offense. For a team with the NFL's # 1 offense, which had been averaging 400+ yards and nearly 30 points a game, a dismal output like that is simply unacceptable even against a defense like Jaxsonville's.
The Bottom Line Is.....
This was just an ugly loss for the Eagles. As good as their defense was today, their offense was twice as bad. I mean, there were false starts, incomplete passes, and dropped passes. Basically it would be very difficult for the Eagles offense to execute any worse than they did today. Even in the last 2 weeks although they got off to slow starts ,the Eagles still managed to come alive just long enough for over 300 yards and 21 points. Today, they were just awful from start to finish and never really got untracked against the Jaguars. However, an even bigger problem for the Birds is that this is their 3rd consecutive loss and they are now just 4-4 on the season. Fortunately next week is their bye week, so hopefully they will be able to figure out whatever it is that's been wrong with them these last few weeks, because I sure can't figure it out and I doubt you can either.

It Was Over When.....
The second period began. When the 1st period ended the Penguins led precariously 2-1, but by the time the second period ended they were comfortably ahead 6-1 and on their way to a win.
The Game Puck Goes To.....
Penguins wunderkind Sydney Crosby, who scored 3 goals on the night, giving him his first career hat trick.
The Stat Of the Game Is.....
8, as in 8 goals on the night for the Penguins, including 4 in the 2nd period alone. Antero Niittymaki started the night as goalie for the Flyers and gave up 4 goals on just 9 shots, Robert Esche than replaced him and preceded to give up 4 more goals on 21 shots. Basically, the Flyers defense and goaltending just wasn't on par tonight.
The Bottom Line Is.....
About the only thing worse than this loss was that 9-1 loss to the Sabres earlier this season. I thought that after their win on Thursday things were going to be different for the Flyers from now to the end of the season, but obviously they have not yet been cured of whatever ails them, and its going to take more than just a new GM and head coach to cure them.

In just about every game up until now, that stat had gone the other way for the Flyers, as they continually failed to take advantage of their power play chances. Tonight however, they took advantage of 1 their 2 opportunities, while killing off all of the Thrasher's opportunities, and what do you know they won.
The Bottom Line Is.....
Well, all I can say is thank God the Flyers finally got another win. Maybe a new GM and head coach is just what the doctor ordered for the Flyers after all.

There is nothing new to report, well actually there is, since the Sixers just finished their preseason, but as with the Flyers' preseason I am not going to report on it just yet, but look for a report on that either sometime this weekend, or sometime early next week.

PHILLIES NEWS

Well, I believe I said before, that it's never too early to look ahead, and the Phillies continued to do so today. They signed free agent Jamie Moyer, whom they had acquired in a trade earlier this season to a 2 year 10.5 million deal. Yes, that's right Moyer who did a solid job for the Phillies down the stretch, will be in a Phils uniform for at least 2 more years. Personally I think this is a good investment for the Phils and it shows that GM Pat Gillick is really dedicated to making this team a winner. Well, happy trails everyone.

EAGLES NEWS

Buccaneers 23 Eagles 21
It Was Over When.....
Matt Bryant hit a near record 62 yard field goal as time expired, to give the Bucs the win
The Game Ball Goes To.....
Matt Bryant, who hit 3 field goals on the day, including the game winner. Prior to today he hadn't hit a field goal over 30 yards all year, but today he just couldn't miss.
The Stat of The Game Is.....
3, as in 3 turnovers by the Eagles to none for the Bucs. Most statistics show that if you lose the turnover battle, you usually lose the game.
The Bottom Line Is.....
Does it get any more heartbreaking than this one. Yes the Eagles were terrible in the 1st half, but as bad as they were in the 1st half, they were that much better in the 2nd half. Mcnabb ushered 3 80+ yard drives to rally the Eagles to a 21-20 lead, but in the end that last score by Brian Westbrook was just 4 seconds to early. The Eagles probably didn't deserve to win this one, but they should have, and what makes it even tougher is the fact that their schedule only gets tougher from here. I just hope they can back on the winning track next week.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers made a couple stunning moves today, I mean I know they lost 5 in a row, but wow. Anyway the stunning news is this, GM Bobby Clarke resigned and head coach Ken Hitchcock was fired. Yes that's right they're both gone and replacing them will be Paul Homgren as the GM(he was the assistant GM) and John Stevens as the interim head coach(he was an assistant coach under Hitchcock and he was the headcoach of the 2004 calder cup champion Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL). If you can't believe it, that's okay because I couldn't either.
