PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils continued their series with the Marlins tonight. Joe Blanton got the start and pitched okay, allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits in 5 innings of work. Meanwhile, the Phils also had 2 runs in those 5 innings, and so would need a late run somewhere along the line to pull this one out. In the top of the 3rd, Chase Utley singled in a run for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, John Baker slapped a 2 run double for a 2-1 fish lead. In the top of the 4th, the "Flyin Hawaiian" Shane Victorino slugged a solo homer to knot it up at 2. In the top of the 6th, Greg Dobbs singled in a run for a 3-2 lead. Finally in the bottom of the 9th, after a leadoff walk, Brad Lidge struck out the side to close out the Fish, and the 3-2 Phils' win. So the Phils move to 87-68 overall, once again .5 games up in the NL East.

PHILLIES NEWS

After yet another sweep of the Braves in Atlanta, the Phils traveled to Florida tonight to begin a 3 game series with the suddenly red hot Marlins. Brett Myers, who has been brilliant of late, got the start, but he was not brilliant on this night, allowing 10 runs on 9 hits in just 4 innings of work. Meanwhile, the Phils jumped out early with 6 runs through 5 innings, but thanks to the Myer's debacle, they would need some late game heroics to pull this one out. Now onto the game. In the top of the 1st, Chase Utley walked and scored on a fielding error and Jayson Werth singled and scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 5th, John Baker singled in a run, Mike Jacobs slapped a 2 run double and Dan Uggla slammed a 2 run homer for a 5-2 fish lead. In the top of the 2nd, Greg Dobbs slugged a solo homer, and Utley sac flyed in a run to cut the lead to 5-4. In the top of the 5th, Mr.September struck again as Ryan Howard crushed a 2 run homer for a 6-5 Phils' lead. In the bottom of the 5th, Jorge Cantu doubled in one run, Uggla singled in a second, a sac fly off the bat of Luis Gonzalez scored a 3rd run, and a 3 run homer by Alfredo Amezaga suddenly made it 11-6 fish. In the bottom of the 6th, Mike Jacobs slapped a 2 run single for a 13-6 lead. In the top of the 7th, Howard sac flyed in a run to cut the lead to 13-7. In the top of the 8th, the "Flyin Hawaiian" Shane Victorino based a solo shot to cut the lead to 13-8. In the bottom of the 8th, Cantu smashed a solo homer for a 14-8 lead. Finally in the top of the 9th, the Phils went down quietly to finish off the 14-8 Marlin's win. So the Phils drop to 86-68 overall, now .5 games back in the NL East but 2 games up in the wildcard.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils finished their series with the Braves tonight. Cole Hamels got the start and pitched well, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits in 6 strong innings of work. Meanwhile, the Phil's bats jumped out early again with 2 runs in the first inning. So again Hamel's would need the bullpen to preserve the win for him. Now onto the game. In the top of the 1st, Jayson Werth doubled in one run and then scored on a sac fly by Ryan Howard for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 1st, Brian Mcann doubled in a run to cut the lead to 2-1. In the bottom of the 2nd, Casey Kotchman slammed a solo homer to tie it up at 2. In the top of the 6th, "the Bat" Pat Burrell slugged a 2 run homer for a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, Kelly Johnson singled and scored on a fielding error by Jimmy Rollins to cut the lead to 4-3. Finally in the bottom of the 9th, Brad Lidge retired the Braves in order to close out the 4-3 win. So the Phils move to 86-67 overall and remain .5 games up in the NL East, and complete a remarkable 9-0 run in Atlanta this season.

PHILLIES NEWS

The Phils continued their series with the Braves tonight. J.A Happ got the start in place of Kyle Kendrick, who was given the night off reportedly, due to mental and physical fatigue, and after the thumping he took in his last two starts, there's no wonder why. Happ responded with a superb outing, tossing 6 scoreless innings on just 3 hits. Meanwhile, the Phils bat's jumped out early with 4 runs in the 1st inning, so Happ would need the bullpen to protect his first win. Now onto the game. In the top of the 1st, Mr.September struck again as Ryan Howard slapped an RBI single, Jayson Werth scored a 2nd run on an error by Brian Mcann, and Carlos Ruiz slapped a bases loaded single for 2 more runs and a 4 -0 lead. In the top of the 8th, "the Bat" Pat Burrell singled, and was replaced on the basepaths by Eric Bruntlett who scored a few batters later on a fielder's choice for a 5-0 lead. In the top of the 9th, Matt Stairs slammed his 1st homer as a phil for a 6-0 lead. Finally in the bottom of the 9th, after allowing their only run of the night, Clay Condrey closed out the Braves and the 6-1 Phils win. So the Phils move to 85-67 overall and remain .5 games up in the NL East.

FLYERS NEWS

Mike Richards was named the Flyer's captain for the upcoming season, supplanting veteran defenseman Derian Hatcher with the Captain's C on his chest. There is no question he is the most talented player on the team at this point, at least until Simon Gagne can figure out how to stay healthy, and there is no one who is more deserving of the honor.

PHILLIES NEWS

Coming off a dramatic sweep of the Brewers, the Phils traveled to Atlanta to begin a 3 game series, in the suddenly very comfy confines of Turner field where they had won 6 in a row coming in. Jamie Moyer got the start and was roughed up for 6 runs on 6 hits in just 5 and 2/3rd's innings of work. Meanwhile, the Phils bat's jumped out early with 4 runs in the first 4 innings. So they hung with the Braves early and would need some late heroics to pull this one out. Now onto the game. In the top of the 3rd, Chase Utley doubled in one run, and Jayson Werth slammed a 2 run homer for a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, Brian Mcann singled in one run ,and Casey Kotchman followed a a couple batters later with a 2 run single to knot it up at 3. In the top of the 4th, Carlos Ruiz slugged a solo homer for a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the 6th, Jeff Franceour singled and scored on a fielder's choice, and Kelly Johnson slapped a 2 run single to give the Braves their first lead at 7-4. In the top of the 7th, "Mr.September" Ryan Howard used his blazing speed to leg out a triple(okay so he actually lined a ball off the right-field wall that bounced about 20 feet away from any fielders and strolled into 3rd, but it was still impressive) and knock in one run, and then he scored on a single by the "Flyin Hawaiian" Shane Victorino to cut the lead to 7-6. In the top of the 8th, Mr.September struck again, as Howard crushed a 2 out 2 run homer for an 8-7 lead, can you say MVP. From there Ryan Madson blanked the Braves in the bottom of the inning, and Brad Lidge escaped a 2 out bases loaded jam in the 9th to close out the 8-7 win. So with the Mets losing again tonight the Phils move to 84-67 overall, now .5 games up on the Mets in the NL East.
