FLYERS NEWS

Chris Pronger was back in black,er make that Orange and Black tonight as he and Flyers returned to what is now the Wells Fargo center for the 2010-2011 home opener. With Pronger back in tow the Flyers' defense finally started to clean things up, holding the Avs to just 25 shots on goal and committing just 3 penalties. Still, they did have a mental lapse in the 2nd period which almost cost them as they continued to not make it easy for themselves. Their power play has struggled so far but the penalty kill unit has been untouchable and they were again today as they produced yet another shorthanded tallly and killed off all the Avalanche power plays.

Meanwhile, Sergei Bobrovsky got his 2nd start in goal of the season and was impressive, saving 25 of the 27 shots he faced, including several kep stops in the game's final minute or so. With Bob shutting down the Avs the Orange and Black were able to dominate the 1st period and take an early 2-0 lead on goals by Jeff Carter and Claude Giroux(shorthanded). In the 2nd period the Flyers hit the snooze button and allowed Colorado back into it. Just 32 seconds into the 3rd period, Milan Hejduk beat Bobrovsky to knot it up at 2. With the Flyers still snoozing at the time, it looked like a victory in the home opener was going to slip right threw their fingers. However, just as in the season's 1st 2 games the Orange and Black were able to pick it up when they needed to.

With a little under 3 minutes left in the game Carter scored his 2nd goal of the night off Mike Richards' 2nd assist for a 3-2 lead. The two teams battled on bravely after that until Daroll Powe scored an empty netter with a little over a minute left to put away a 4-2 Flyer's win for good. With the win the Orange and Black now have 5 points in their first 3 games and certainly appear headed for a big season.

Things are looking good for the Flyers and I expect big things out of them as long as they manage to all stay healthy.
