What's worse? Watching your team get blown out or watching them blow a huge lead late? After tonight's contest between the Flyers and the Thrashers I would have to say the latter. For the most part this was a dominating performance by the Orange and Black. Through 2 periods Ville Leino was 2/3rds of the way to a hat trick, Mike Richards already had 2 assists, and Sergei Bobrovsky was having an outstanding night, stopping all 21 shots he faced. Then it all came crashing down in the 3rd period. Bob quickly lost the shutout early in the 3rd as the lead dwindled to 3-2, but it didn't seem like it would matter as Richards notched his 3rd assist of the night and Leino completed the hat trick for a 4-2 lead. That was it, game, set, and match right? Not on this night.
As has happened so many times this season, the Flyers basically shut it down after taking the 2 goal lead and just attempted to hold on defense. Unfortunately they couldn't do it this time. A power play goal by Tobias Enstrom with 3 minutes left cut it to 4-3. It stayed until the final seconds where it looked like the Flyers would wrap things up with an empty netter. Instead with 45 seconds left Kris Versteeg messed up a clearing attempt in the Flyers zone and Andrew Ladd made him pay with the game tying tally. From there the game went into overtime and just over a minute into overtime Atlanta complete their grand larceny and with a Ron Hainsey goal to finish a disheartening 5-4 loss. Yep it doesn't get any worse than that.
