The Phils traveled to New York and brand new citi field, to begin yet another series with the hated Mets. Chan Ho Park got the start and was close to brilliant allowing just one hit in 6 shutout innings. Unfortunately Johan Santana was slightly better for the Mets allowing just 2 hits in 7 shutout innings. In the end though it was not pitching that decided the game tonight, but rather fielding, as in Pedro Feliz in the bottom of the 7th inning. With 2 out, the score tied at 0, and only a runner on first, Fernando Tatis slapped slow roller towards third base, which Feliz should have just grabbed and held onto, since there was no play on Tatis at first or on Carlos Delgado at 2nd. Instead he threw wildly to first in an attempt to make a spectacular play, and the ball got by Ryan Howard and into right field. At that point Delgado stupidly rounded third and tried to score, but for some reason Jayson Werth, backing up the play, didn't see him right away, and by the time he did, despite a strong throw, it was too late as Delgado managed to sneak in under the tag of Carlos Ruiz. Ultimately it was the only run of the night as the Mets went on to win 1-0. You never know what would have happened had Feliz not made the error and the game had stayed tied at 0 probably into extra innings, but the Phils would have at least had a chance to win. So you can bet if the difference between winning and losing the division or the wild card, comes down to 1 game at the end of this season, this is one they'll look back on. Anyway, despite the loss the Phils remain 1st in the NL East, as the Marlins lost tonight as well.

The Phils finished their series with the Cardinals tonight and continued to knock the ball around racking up 10 runs on 15 hits. Meanwhile, Brett Myers put forth a decent outing, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits in just 5 and 1/3rd innings of work, just enough for a win. The Phils simply had too much firepower for the Cardinals to handle. In the top of the 1st, the "Flyin Hawaiian", Shane Victorino slapped a solo homer for a 1-0 lead. In the top of the 3rd Victorino doubled in a couple of runs and scored on a sac fly by Jayson Werth for a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd Tyler Greene doubled and scored on fielder's choice to cut it to 4-1. In the bottom of the 4th Ryan Ludwick and Yadier Molina each slugged solo homers to cut it to 4-3. In the top of the 5th Werth crushed a 3 run homer for a 7-3 lead. In the bottom of the 5th Ludwick singled in a run to cut it to 7-4. In the bottom of the 6th Greene sac flyed in a run to cut it to 7-5. In the top of the 7th Victorino singled and scored on a single by Ryan Howard, and Pedro Feliz beat out an infield single to allow another run to score for a 9-5 lead. In the bottom of the 7th Colby Rasmus doubled in a run to cut it to 9-6. In the top of the 9th Feliz doubled in a run for a 10-6 lead. Finally in the bottom of the 9th Albert Pujols crushed a solo homer leading off, before Brad Lidge retired the side for the 10-7 win. So the Phils move to 14-10 overall and into 1st in the NL East by a half a game over the Marlins. That's right the magic number is only 138 for the Phils to clinch the division.

The Phils traveled to St.Louis tonight to begin a series with the Cardinals. Joe Blanton who had been struggling on the season thus far,got the start and finally put together a decent outing allowing just 1 run on 4 hits in 6 solid innings of work. Meanwhile, the Phils tagged ex-teammate Kyle Lohse for 6 runs on 7 hits in just 4 and 1/3rd innings of work. So it was fun night all around, although it took a little while for both teams to get it going. In the bottom of the 3rd, Joe Thurston finally knocked in the first run of the game on an RBI double for a 1-0 Card's lead. In the top of the 4th Jayson Werth finally got the Phils on the board lining a 2 run homer into the seats for a 2-1 lead. In the top of the 5th, Ryan Howard, always a safe bet in his hometown, crushed a grand slam for a 6-1 lead. Thanks to a great escape by Blanton from a one out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the inning, and three subsequent innings of 1 hit ball from the Phils bullpen, it stayed 6-1 the rest of the night as the Phils took their 2nd win in a row. So the Phils move to 13-10 overall and remain a half a game behind the Marlins for first in the NL East.

The Phils and Mets weekend finale/rubber match was rained out today, the 3rd rainout of the season for the Phils. So they have got a lot of making up to do and so far no one knows when any of their makeup games will be. Anyway if nothing else the extra day off gave Cole Hamels some extra time to recover from his ankle injury so perhaps he may be able to make his next start after all or at least not miss any more than one more start.

The Phils continued their series with the hated Mets this afternoon. As was hoped Jamie Moyer did pitch well, but he flamed out after just 5 and 2/3rd's innings and when all was said and done, he'd been charged with 5 runs on 7 hits during those innings. Fortunately, those 5 and 2/3rd's innings were 3 and 1/3rd more innings than Mets starter Oliver Perez managed to go. So Moyer's performance was enough to keep the Phils in it and it would be up to them to take care of the rest. In the bottom of the 1st, "the Flyin Hawaiian" Shane Victorino tripled and scored on a sac fly and Jayson Werth walked and scored on a single by Jimmy Rollins for the early 2-0 lead. In the top of the 2nd the Mets came back with, yes you guessed it, a sac fly to cut the lead to 2-1. In the bottom of the 2nd Victorino doubled and scored again on a double by Werth for a 3-1 lead. In the top of the 3rd the Mets cut it to 3-2 with ,yes, a sac fly. In the bottom of the 3rd Moyer worked a bases loaded walk for a 4-2 lead, and the end of Perez's day. In the top of the 6th Moyer finally ran out of gas, surrendering back to back Homers to Daniel Murphy and Ramon Castro to tie it at 4. Alex Cora then slapped a triple and that was it for Moyer. Scott Eyre replaced Moyer and could only give up the go ahead run on a single by Luis Castillo. Fortunately Clay Condrey got out of the inning after that to keep it at 5-4 Mets. In the bottom of the 6th, Raul Ibanez crushed the first pitch he saw off Pedro Feliciano for a game tying homer, setting the stage for some late game heroics. Both Bullpens carried the game from there into the 10th inning. In the top of the 10th the Mets failed to capitalize on an opportunity to take back the lead with runners on first and third and 1 out. The Phils were not so merciful in the bottom of the 10th, as Sean Green walked the bases loaded with 2 outs, and then walked Victorino after a long at bat, as the Phils literally walked off with the 6-5 win. So the phils move to 12-10 overall and now just a game out of 1st in the NL East.

The Phils welcomed the hated New York Mets to the Bank tonight to open a weekend series. Chan Ho Park took the mound for the Phils and struggled, allowing 7 runs on 8 hits in just 4 and 2/3rd's innings of work. Meanwhile, the Phils had a bit of an off day at the plate, stranding base runners on more than one occassion, while putting together really only one good inning. So it was a struggle all around for the Phils tonight and they'll need to be sharper the rest of the weekend. Anyway in the top of the 1st, Daniel Murphy lined a 2 run homer just over the fence for a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 2nd the Mets sac flyed in a couple of runs for a 4-0 lead. In the top of the 3rd, the Mets sac flyed in another run for a 5-0 lead. Finally in the bottom of the 3rd, the Phils answered with a 2 RBI single by Raul Ibanez and an RBI single by Pedro Feliz to cut the lead to 5-3. In the top of the 5th David Wright and Mike Pelfrey, the pitcher, each singled in a run for a 7-3 lead. In the bottom of the 7th Chase Utley crushed a solo homer to cut it to 7-4. Finally in the bottom of the 9th with one on and two out K-Rod got Ryan Howard to strike out swinging to preserve the 7-4 win. So the Phils drop to 11-10 overall and will look to rebound tomorrow with the veteran Jamie Moyer on the mound in place of Cole Hamels who remains day to day with the ankle sprain he suffered in his last start.

SIXERS NEWS
No Dwight Howard and no Courtney Lee was no problem for the Orlando Magic tonight in game 6 of the Sixers' opening playoff series. J.J Redick drilled 5 threes, and Marjun Gortat had 11 and 15 rebounds to offset the absences of Howard and Lee. The Meanwhile the Sixers stumbled and sleepwalked through the entire night. Perhaps they just couldn't get up for it without the prospect of facing Howard, or maybe they just had nothing left to give. Whatever the reason, the defense wasn't there for the Sixers as Orlando hit 12 threes and shot 53% from the field. Meanwhile, offensively it was a nightmare game for the Sixers. Somehow with no Howard patrolling the paint Orlando managed to goad the Sixers into chucking 20 three pointers, which isn't their game at all. It was thought that they would use Howard's absence to drive to the basket and either get to the foul line or get easy layups. Inexplicably, they never really did and the result was one of the most painful season ending games you could ever see. The Sixers simply appeared dazed and confused all night long, and never found any energy. Despite that, their most energetic player off the bench, Reggie Evans, somehow never got in the game. It was as if Dileo forgot he was there. Perhaps if Evans had gotten some minutes, the Sixers energy level might have gone up before too late in the game and the defense might have locked down the magic in enough time to mount a comeback. Instead the Sixers sleapwalked through the game before eventually losing by the embarrassing final score 114-89. So the Sixers get a whole off season now to think about how badly they played tonight and what might have been. No matter, they'll be back in business next season with a healthy Elton Brand and Jason Smith in the lineup. Hopefully then they won't have to face this indignity for a 3 season in a row.

The Phils finished their series with the Nationals tonight, looking to complete their second series sweep in a row. Brett Myers got the start and was decent allowing just 3 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings of work. As well as the Phils lineup has performed lately, you would think that would have been enough for the win, especially against the Nationals, but it was not. You just can't win everyday, even against the Nationals. "The Flyin Hawaiian", Shane Victorino actually slugged a solo homer in the bottom of the 1st for the early 1-0 lead. From there though, it was all Nats. In the top of the 3rd Ryan Zimmerman worked a bases loaded walk to knot it up at 1. In the top of the 6th Elijah Dukes singled in a run and scored on a single by Anderson Hernandez for a 3-1 lead. In the top of the 8th Hernandez doubled in another run for a 4-1 lead. Finally in the bottom of the 9th, the Phils for once did not have an answer and succumbed 4-1. So the Phils drop to 11-9 overall but remain 2nd in the NL East now 1.5 games behind Florida.

In some not so surprising news, the NBA announced that Dwight Howard will be suspended for game 6 of the Sixers opening playoff series tomorrow night. With Courtney Lee apparently out in with an injury for game 6 as well, the Sixers now have a golden opportunity to force a decisive game 7 in the series and perhaps to win the series. They just have to be sure to secure the rebounds that should now fall to them and to continue to play tough d against Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu.

The Phils continued their series with the Nationals tonight. Cole Hamels got the start and was rolling along into the bottom of the 5th, where with one out, he attempted to field a ground ball to set up a double play and wound up turning his ankle while fielding the ball. He is currently listed again as day to day. So his day was done but the Phils bullpen did a great job the rest of the way, limiting the Nats to just one run on 2 hits the rest of the way. Meanwhile the Phils bats were building up a nice lead they would not soon relinquish. In the bottom of the 3rd Chase Utley crushed a 2 run homer and Pedro Feliz slugged a 3 run homer for a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the 5th Utley struck again with a solo shot for a 6-0 lead. In the top of the 6th Adam Dunn clobbered a solo homer to cut it to 6-1. In the bottom of the 8th Raul Ibanez lined another homer into the seats, this one a solo shot, for a 7-1 lead. Finally in the top of the 9th Clay Condrey closed out the Nats for the 7-1 win. So the Phils improve to 11-8 overall with their 5th win in a row, but remain 2nd in the NL East.

The Sixers now find themselves on the brink of elimination after playing game 5 of their opening playoff series with the Magic tonight. Just as in game 2 in Orlando, the Sixers struggled to secure rebounds in this one and so could not put together a final push for victory when they needed it. Also Rashard Lewis had his first good game of the series, hitting 3 threes while scoring 24, and the Sixer's won't win much with Lewis picking them apart. For the Sixers the two Andres led the way as Iggy scored 26 and Miller added 17. Together along with Willie Green and his 16 points, the Sixers were able to stick with the Magc through the first half, trailing by just 6 at halftime with the score 45-39. In the 3rd quarter Orlando pushed ahead by 9 with the score 69-60. From there in the 4th quarter the Sixers just couldn't gather in enough rebounds to make any significant inroads and eventually Orlando ran out to a 13 point win with the final score 91-78. So the Sixers now trail for the first time in the series, 3-2, and will be looking to even it up at 3 games a piece as the series shifts back to the Wachovia center for game 6.

The Phils returned to the Bank tonight to begin a series with the lowly Washington Nationals. Joe Blanton got the start, and well he just hasn't found himself yet this season, and even against the Nationals he just didn't have it. In all he was touched up for 6 runs on 8 hits in just 4 and 1/3rd innings of work. Normally that might have been a recipe for disaster, but fortunately they were playing the Nationals and so instead this one turned into a slugfest for the ages. It began in the top of the 2nd as Alberto Gonzalez sac flyed in one run and the pitcher Shairon Martis singled in a 2nd run for a 2-0 Nat's lead. In the bottom of the 2nd, Greg Dobbs singled in one run and Raul Ibanez doubled and scored on a fielder's choice to knot it up at 2. In the top of the 3rd Ryan Zimmerman crushed a 2 run homer and Elijah Dukes smashed a solo shot for a 5-2 lead. Zimmerman struck again with a solo shot in the top of the 5th for a 6-2 Nat's lead. Ryan Howard answered the bell in the bottom of the inning as he crushed a grand slam to knot it up again at 6. In the top of the 6th Dukes worked a bases loaded walk for a 7-6 Nat's lead. In the bottom of the 6th Jimmy Rollins blooped a double to left field for another run to tie it up again at 7. In the top of the 8th Nick Johnson and Adam Dunn each slammed 2 run homers for an 11-7 lead. It should have been game over for the Phils at that point, except it's never really over when you're playing Nationals. So in the bottom of the 8th, "the Flyin Hawaiian" Shane Victorino sac flyed in one run, Chase Utley singled in a 2nd run, and stunningly Ibanez clobbered the Phils 2nd grand slam of the night for a 13-11 lead. Finally in the top of the 9th Ryan Madson took care of business and closed out the Phils 4th win in a row. So the Phils move to 10-8 overall and now just a half of a game out of 1st in the NL East.

The Phils finished their series with the Marlins this afternoon, looking to complete the sweep. Thanks to 6 strong innings out of Jamie Moyer in which he allowed just 1 run 7 hits while striking out 6 and a monster 13 run, 12 hit day for the Phils lineup they got the sweep easily. In the top of the 1st Ryan Howard singled in one run and Raul Ibanez sac flyed in another run for a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 4th Moyer got his first hit of the season, a single, and Chase Utley slapped a 2 run single for a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the 5th Hanley Ramirez singled in a run to put Florida on the board and cut the lead to 4-1. In the top of the 7th, Pedro Feliz singled in one run, Greg Dobbs worked a bases loaded walk for a 2nd run, and the "Flyin Hawaiian" Shane Victorino socked another 2 run single for an 8-1 lead. In the top of the 8th, Feliz singled in another run, Matt Stairs worked a bases loaded walk, Victorino lined a 2 run double to right and Eric Bruntlett hit a sac fly to score Stairs for a 13-1 lead. Finally the embarrassed Marlins somehow managed a run on a sac fly in the bottom of the 9th to cut it to 13-2, before J.A Happ closed them out. So the Phils get back over .500 at 9-8 overall and now sit just 1.5 games behind Florida for first in the NL East.

The Sixers played game 4 of their opening playoff series with the Magic tonight, looking to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. It was an ugly night for both teams, and the Sixers were extra scrappy in the final minutes of the 4th quarter erasing a 10 point Orlando lead. For a moment then it did look as if they would get their 3-1 lead, but it was not to be as fate dealt them a cruel hand. Both teams struggled offensively, as the Magic again shot just 30% from the beyond the arc and the Sixers shot just 38% from the field. It was by far the best defensive effort of the Magic thus far this series, and yet they were still outrebounded 43-37 overall and 10-3 on the offensive glass, and allowed the Sixers to take it down to the wire. That says something about the play of the Magic so far in this series. They have simply appeared lazy and disinterested, perhaps because they have no respect for the Sixers, or maybe they just don't care at all I don't know. They may turn it up now that they have the advantage in the series again, but if they don't the Sixers will still have a chance in this series. Anyway back to the game both teams were terrible in the first half and the score heading into the 3rd quarter was an ugly 36-36 tie. In the 3rd quarter Orlando tried to turn it on a bit, and they were able to build a 10 point lead. They were still leading by 10 with about 5 minutes to play. Then the Sixers turned it up on D and made one final push, amazingly tying it up at 81-81 on a dunk by Sammy Dalembert with 15 seconds to play. From there on the ensuing Orlando possession the Magic gave the ball to Hedo Turkoglu who had been struggling all series long. This time he came through drilling a three pointer over Thad Young, who had stepped back just hair to much to stop him. Iggy missed a 3 at the buzzer on the other end and the Magic had their win in Philly 84-81, and the 2-2 series tie. The Sixers will now have to win at least one more game in Orlando to win the series, and that may be asking to much.
EAGLES NEWS
The Birds finished their draft today with some picks that were interesting and useful. First of all they traded away their 3rd and 4th round picks for a chock full of 5th through 7th round picks and 2 time pro bowl CB Ellis Hobbs from the Patriots, which could mean that suddenly disgruntled CB Sheldon Brown is headed out of town. In the 5th round with the 153rd pick they got Florida tight end Cornelius Ingram. With L.J Smith finally out of town the Eagles needed someone to back up Brent Celek and Ingram the fastest TE in the draft will be the guy to do so. Ingram did miss last season with a knee injury, but he has about as much potential as any tight end in the draft so it was good for the Eagles to get him this late. Later in the 5th round with the 157th pick they took Virginia Tech CB Victor Harris, further evidence that Sheldon Brown might be headed out of town. There is nothing particularly special about Harris, but he is versatile and assuming Sheldon's gone, he provides them with some solid secondary depth. Finally they finished the 5th round using the 159th pick to take Oregon tackle Fenuki Tupou another versatile guy who provides some depth. In the 6th round they used the 194th pick to select Washington state WR Brandon Gibson, evidence that perhaps Reggie Brown is gone to. Gibson is a decent receiver, with okay size at 6-1 206 pounds and good hands, so he'll provide some nice depth too if he makes the team. Finally in the 7th round they took Arizona State guard Paul Fanaika with the 213th pick and Maryland LB Moise Fokou with the 230th pick. They're both just a couple of guys who might make the team and provide some depth or not.

EAGLES NEWS
The Birds made their first two selections of the 2009 NFL draft today. First after they were unable to trade up for Georgia RB Knowshon Moreno, they traded up from the 21st pick to the 19th pick in the first round to select Missouri WR Jeremy Maclin. At first I was a bit confused by this pick, but the more I think about it the more I like it. Maclin was a legit top 10 prospect in this draft and to get him at 19 was a real steal for the Eagles. Also he does provide the Eagles with two things they needed. First of all he can come right in and play as the Eagles kick returner which allows Quintin Demps to just focus on being the Eagles new number 1 at free safety. I think it may have been asking a little too much of him to both replace a legend and continue to be the steady kick returner. Secondly, I think he gives them a legit number 3 receiver right now and a future number 2 along side Desean Jackson. Frankly I question whether or not Reggie Brown will even play for the Eagles this season. They didn't even use him at all late last season and seemed to be less than thrilled with his play when they were using him. After getting Maclin the Eagles finished the day by selecting Pittsburgh RB Lesean Mccoy in the 2nd round with the 53rd pick. Mccoy has been described as a younger version of Brian Westbrook, capable of making people miss, whether catching a pass out of the backfield or taking a handoff. Therefore he will immediately provide a one two punch at running back for the Eagles and is capable of becoming their number 1 back in the future. With Correll Buckhalter gone in free agency, and really only Lorenzo Booker behind Westbrook on the depth chart this was a pick the Birds needed to make. All in all I would say it was very good first day of the draft for the Eagles.

In the bottom of the 4th Jorge Cantu crushed a 3 run homer and Dan Uggla followed with a solo shot for a 4-2 Marlin lead. In the top of the 6th Jimmy Rollins singled and scored on a fielder's choice to cut it to 4-3. It was still 4-3 in the top of 9th when Jayson Werth doubled and scored on a fielder's choice to knot it up at 4 and send the game into the extra innings. Finally in the top of the 10th Chase Utley singled in one run and Werth singled in a second run for a 6-4 lead. After walking the bases loaded Brad Lidge then closed out the 6-4 win , striking out Cody Ross on a slider. So the Phils move to 8-8 overall and look to finish the sweep tomorrow.
FLYERS NEWS
The dream is dead. Well for this year anyway. The Flyers had to knock off the Penguins in game 6 at the Wachovia center to keep their season alive. Despite taking a 3-0 lead early in the 2nd period they did not. Sometimes it just isn't your year. 30 saves from Marty Biron and a goal and an assist from Danny Briere just weren't enough. The Flyers just seemed to run out of gas after the Pens rallied back to tie it, and played very sloppy throughout the 3rd period. Frankly the game was really a microcosm of the Flyer's season. They started strong, faced a little adversity, and just went away for a while. Unfortunately there wasn't enough time for then to recover and come on strong again. Late in the first period Mike Knuble scored for a 1-0 lead and Joffrey Lupul followed a minute later for a 2-0 lead. Early in the 2nd period Danny Briere scored off the power play for a 3-0 lead and the celebration was on, the Flyers were going to force a game 7. There was no way Biron would allow the Pens to come back from three goals down would he? Unfortunately Dan Carcillo then made a huge mistake picking a fight with Maxim Talbot. Yes he won the fight easily and fired up the home crowd, but at the same time he unwittingly lit a fire under the Pens. No sooner was Carcillo in the box when ex-Flyer Ruslan Fedotenko put the Pens on the board scoring off a crazy deflection to cut the lead to 3-1. Two minutes later, another crazy deflection and another goal this time scored by Mark Eaton and Pittsburgh had cut it to 3-2. Late in the period "the Kid" Sidney Crosby finished the comeback off with yet another crazy deflection to knot it up at 3. Early in the 3rd period the Flyers somehow got lost in their own zone, allowing Sergei Gonchar to freely blast one past Biron from just inside the blue line for a 4-3 Pens lead. From there Biron bared down and kept it 4-3 until he was pulled in favor of the extra attacker with under 2 minutes to play. Sadly just as they began playing with the extra attacker Jeff Carter weakly gift wrapped a pass right onto the stick of Crosby who raced in to score an empty netter to sink the Flyers 5-3. SIXERS NEWS
The Sixers played game 3 of their opening playoff series with the Magic tonight at the Wachovia center. With the series tied at 1 game a piece the Sixers needed the win to keep the upper hand in the series they had seized by rallying from 18 points down to win game 1. Early on it looked like they would do so easily. However, just as the Sixers had done in games 1 and 2, the Magic managed to rally from way down to get back in game, leading to a heart stopping 4th quarter. This time the Sixers secured the rebounds they let get away in game 2. They also continued to shutdown the Magic from beyond the arc, as Orlando hit just 8 of 20. That coupled with stalwart performances out of Iggy with 29 points, and Andre Miller with 24 allowed the Sixers to turn the tables in their favor in this one. Early on the Sixers got off to a great start while the Magic put up little resistance. By the half the Sixers were up by 11 with the score 60-49. They kept it going in the 3rd quarter building up an 18 point lead at one point. Then Orlando seemingly flipped the switch, picking it up on defense, and hitting some threes to pull within 3 heading into the 4th quarter with the score 80-77. All seemed lost with 6 minutes to play in the 4th quarter as Rashard Lewis drilled a 3 pointer to tie it up at 86. The Sixers remained poised though and continued to play stingy enough D to keep a nose in front until Dwight Howard sunk two free throws with 7 seconds left to tie it up again at 94. From there out of the timeout the Sixers looked to in bound the ball to Iggy for the win, but he was well covered so Thad Young, cutting towards the basket got the ball instead. He ran into Howard who knocked the ball loose, and seemed to poise to keep him from getting a shot off before time expired. Somehow Thad regrouped, got the ball back, and got under Howard to lay in the game winning basket. Lewis' desperation heave from halfcourt then harmlessly sailed off the top of backboard to cap off the 96-94 Sixers' win and set off a raucous celebration among the fans and players. So once again to everyone's surprise the Sixers lead their opening series 2-1. We'll see if they can translate this into a series win this time around.

The Phils traveled to Florida tonight to begin a 3 game series with the Marlins. Having lost their last 2 games the Phils really needed to win this one to get back on track. Once again though they didn't seem to be able to come up with any momentum against Marlins starter Josh Johnson who shut them down for 7 innings on just 3 hits. Meanwhile, Brett Myers was rocked early, but managed to keep the Phils in it, toughing out 6 innings, while allowing just 3 runs on 8 hits. Still through 8 innings the Phils were scoreless and there was little chance of them pulling this one out. After all it is rare that a team blows a three run lead in the 9th inning and just as rare that a team scores 3 runs or more in the 9th inning. So the odds were truly stacked against the Phils in this one. The 3 runs came on a monster 3 run homer off the bat of Dan Uggla in the bottom of the 1st and thanks to Johnson those runs appeared to be all the Marlins would needed on this night. After that homer though Myers kept the Fish off the board through the 6th and Clay Condrey took care of business in the 7th and 8th. So coming into the 9th the Phils still trailed 3-0 but it was going to be too late for them to mount a rally right? Unfortunately, for the Marlins it wasn't too late after all. First Jayson Werth doubled and scored on a single by Matt Stairs to cut it to 3-1. Then a few batters later Jimmy Rollins walked with the bases loaded to cut it to 3-2. Next "the Flyin Hawaiian" Shane Victorino slugged a grand slam, the first of his career in the regular season(He also has one memorable postseason slam), to put the Phils up 6-3. Finally Chase Utley followed with a solo shot to make it 7-3. After allowing a couple of hits, Ryan Madson put away the shell shocked Marlins in the bottom of the inning to close out the 7-3 win. So the Phils move to 7-8 overall and will want to keep this momentum going.

The NFL draft begins tomorrow. It should be an interesting couple of days for the Eagles, and could determine how good they'll be next season.

FLYERS NEWS
The Flyers played game 5 of their opening playoff series with the Penguins. Down 3-1 in the series they had to win to stay alive and stay alive they did. When they had to have it, Marty Biron gave them the best game of his life, saving all 28 shots he faced, for just his 2nd ever playoff shutout. It was not just Biron though who came to play. As a team the Flyers played with increased intensity and energy, the likes of which they hadn't displayed all series long. Clearly they still believe they can win the series, and if they can keep up this kind of play they might still have a chance. Anyway, getting back to tonight, because Biron pitched a shutout the Flyers didn't need to come up with much offense but they did anyhow. Early in the 2nd period Arron Asham scored for a 1-0 lead. Early in the 3rd period Claude Giroux scored for a 2-0 lead. Finally late in the 3rd period Mike Knuble slapped home a rebound to cap off a 3-0 Flyers win. So the Orange and Black cut the series lead to 3-2 and now return to the Wachovia center looking to force a decisive game 7.

The Phils completed their series with the Brewers this afternoon. With Cole Hamels on the mound, they had to feel good about their chances to win. Unfortunately, Hamels lasted just 3 and 1/3rd innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits before disaster struck, as he was nailed in the shoulder by a line drive off the bat of Prince Fielder. Currently Hamels is listed as having suffered a shoulder contusion and is day to day so hopefully he'll be okay. Anyway, while Hamels left the field with an injury, the Phils nearly fell victim to a no-hitter at the hands of Brewers starter Dave Bush. As a result of that combined with the shock of the blow to Hollywood's shoulder ruined the Phils chances of victory. In the top of the 4th, just before Hamels bowed out, Ryan Braun slammed a 2 run homer to put the Brew Crew up 2-0. In the top of the 5th Fielder lined a bases clearing double for a 5-0 lead. In the top of the 8th Bill Hall crushed a solo homer for a 6-0 lead. In bottom of the 8th, Matt Stairs finally broke up Bush's no hit bid with one out, slugging a pinch solo homer to cut the lead to 6-1. Like last night though, it was too late to save the Phils and eventually they lost 6-1. So the Phils drop to 6-8 overall, but this weekend they get their shot at the NL East division leading Florida Marlins and can improve their current situation with a good showing.

Well it's official Tony Gonzalez will not be coming to the Eagles this season. Instead the Atlanta Falcons acquired the future hall of fame tight end in exchange for a 2nd round pick in the 2010 draft. The Eagles, well they um re-signed WR Hank "put the biscuit in the" Baskett to a one year deal today. I don't know maybe the Eagles know something we don't. Perhaps they still think they can get a decent tight end in the draft or maybe they think Brent Celek is already a top flight tight end. Who knows.

SIXERS NEWS
The Sixers played game 2 of their opening playoff series with the Orlando Magic tonight, looking to take a commanding 2-0 series lead. They played well and actually had an early lead, but the Magic again managed to build up an 18 point lead. This time, despite Dwight Howard fouling out, the Sixers couldn't quite come all the way back. The Sixers performed well defensively, limiting Orlando to just 26% shooting from the beyond the arc, and holding superman to a more pedestrian 11 points and 10 rebounds. Unfortunately, they also allowed the Magic to gather in 14 offensive rebounds and that ultimately cost the Sixers the game. Offensively, Thad, Iggy, and Andre Miller combined for 71 points. Unfortunately, the rest of the team contributed just 16 points. That just won't cut it the rest of the series. Still, the Sixers probably could have won this one. The game was tied after the 1st quarter, and the Magic led by just 7 at the half. Things went south in the 3rd quarter as the Magic built an 18 point lead. The Sixers again managed to rally back and were within 5 with under 3 minutes to play and Howard done for the night. Unfortunately, the Sixers couldn't get the stops they needed in the final minutes and Orlando was able to hang on for the 96-87 win. So the series is even at 1 game a piece, but the Sixers still have the home court at this point with the next 2 games at the Wachovia center and if they can just shore up the defensive glass they have a good chance of holding serve.

Although the rain didn't delay the game at all it seemed to throw off the Phils, at the plate, in the field and on the mound, just enough for Milwaukee to eke out a win. In the top of the 5th J.J Hardy lined a solo homer into the seats for a 1-0 Brewer lead. In the top of the 6th Mike Cameron doubled in a couple of runs for a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 9th Jayson Werth finally put the Phils on the board with a solo homer to cut the lead to 3-1. Alas, it was too little, too late, and a few batters later with the tying run on first, Chris Coste struck out to end it. So the Phils drop to 6-7 overall and will look to bounce back tomorrow and win the series.

Fresh off their unexpected day off the Phils welcomed the Milwaukee Brewers to the Bank tonight to begin a 3 game set. Thus far this season the Brewers, the reigning NL wild card champs, have struggled mightily. Their struggle only continued tonight. Jamie Moyer got the start and produced his best outing of the season thus far, allowing just 4 runs on 7 hits in 6 solid innings of work. Meanwhile the Phils victimized Brewer pitching on the night for 11 runs on 13 hits. In fact every member of the Phils starting lineup, even Moyer, managed to reach base safely at least once. The Brewers simply can't get outs right now and from the very beginning the Phils took advantage of them. In the top of the 1st Ryan Braun slammed a solo homer for a 1-0 Brewer lead. They would never lead again. In the bottom of the 1st, 3 straight hits, a double by Jayson Werth and singles by Raul Ibanez and Pedro Feliz, produced 4 runs and a quick 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd Feliz lined a solo homer for a 5-1 lead. In the top of the 5th Braun launched a 2 run shot into orbit to cut the lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the 5th the Phils came right back to just about put the game out of reach, as Ibanez walked, stole second and scored on a fielder's choice, "the Flyin Hawaiian", Shane Victorino singled in a 2nd run, Chase Utley worked a bases loaded walk for a 3rd run, and finally Victorino and Jimmy Rollins each scored on a wild pitch and a subsequent error by catcher Jason Kendall, for a 10-3 lead. In the bottom of the 6th Werth doubled and scored on an infield single by Feliz for an 11-3 lead. In the top of the 7th Braun struck again with an RBI infield single to cut it to 11-4, but Braun's heroics proved meaningless as the Phils bullpen eventually closed out the 11-4 win. So the Phils move back to .500 overall at 6-6 and jump to 2nd in the NL East. Not bad for a day's work.

The Flyers played game 4 of their opening playoff series with the Penguins tonight. Just as with game 3 it was a must win for the Flyers to even the series at 2. Unfortunately, although they came out with the same spark they had in game 3, it was to no avail, as the man of the hour tonight was Pen's goalie Marc Andre Fleury. Fleury compiled 45 saves, many of them spectacular, out of the 46 shots he faced. So in the end the Flyers didn't lose this one, so much as Fleury took it away from them. Early in the 2nd period "the Kid" Sidney Crosby scored on a fluky play in which the puck was passed to him as he slid on his back into the net, sliding the puck in with him for a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later Tyler Kennedy scored for a 2-0 lead. Halfway through the 3rd period Dan Carcillo, of all people, got the Flyers on the board cutting the lead to 2-1. From there the Flyers had their opportunities to score the equalizer but could not. Finally with a minute to play Marty Biron was pulled from goal in favor of the extra attacker, but Scott Hartnell turned the puck over off a faceoff in the Pen's zone, and Max Talbot preceded to fire the puck into the empty net to close out the 3-1 Pen's win. So the Flyers trail now 3 games to 1 and should probably start booking their flights home for the offseason.

SIXERS NEWS
The Sixers began their opening round playoff series with the Magic tonight in Orlando. No one, myself included, gave the Sixers much of a chance to win this series and through 3 periods tonight it looked like they didn't believe they could either. Dwight "superman" Howard was dominating underneath with 31 points and 16 rebounds, but the Magic were abnormally cold from beyond the arc shooting just 27%. Also Hedo Turkoglu, usually one of Orlando's big three, struggled mightily shooting just 2 of 8 from the field for 6 points. The Sixers meanwhile, shot 51% from the field and 58% from beyond the arc. Thus, although Orlando was able to build an 18 point lead at one point in the 3rd quarter they couldn't hit the threes they needed to put the Sixers away. With their big three(Iggy with 20 points, Thad with 14, and Andre Miller with 15) all on their game the Sixers were able to slowly chip away the lead, cutting it to 14 heading into the 4th quarter. Still there was no way the Magic would blow a double digit 4th quarter lead was there? Fortunately no one told the Sixers they couldn't come back. They picked it up on defense just when they needed too, hit every shot they needed to fall, and seemingly pulled down every rebound they had to have. Twice in the final 4 minutes Donyell Marshall answered seemingly back breaking Orlando threes, with threes of his own. The first brought the Sixers within two and the 2nd tied the game at 98 with 35 seconds to play. After Rashard Lewis missed a jumper with 27 seconds to play the Sixers ran the clock down and gave the ball to Iggy who drilled an 18 footer with 2 seconds to play for a 100-98 lead. From there Turkoglu missed a 3 pointer at the buzzer and the Sixers had themselves a stunning 1-0 series lead.

The Flyers returned to the Wachovia center for game 3 of their opening playoff series with the Penguins. Down 2 games to none they had to win to keep hope of winning the series alive. Thanks to 26 saves by Marty Biron, a goal and an assist by Claude Giroux and 2 goals by Simon Gagne they were able to get the win they needed. Frankly they just came out with more energy than they had in the first 2 games and kept at it until the end. If they can figure out a way to play like that for the rest of the series they can still win this thing. Getting back to this game, Jeff Carter got things started with a score early in the first period for a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later Mike Richards made it 2-0. Late in the period Evgeni Malkin scored to cut it to 2-1. Just seconds into the 2nd period Rob Scuderi scored to knot it up at 2. A few minutes later Giroux scored for a 3-2 lead. A few minutes later, an incredible effort by Giroux led to a shorthanded goal by Gagne for a 4-2 lead. Early in the 3rd period Jared Ross made it 5-2. A few minutes later Malkin scored off the Pens power play to cut it to 5-3. Finally with just under 2 minutes to play Gagne scored again to put away a 6-3 win. So the Orange and Black cut the Pens series lead to 2-1 and now must win game 4 to even the series at 2 and put the pressure back on the Pens.

Chan Ho Park got the start and was a bit better than in his first start but still had to be rescued by J.A Happ in the 6th inning after allowing 4 runs on 8 hits in just 5 innings of work. For San Diego Josh Greer kept the Phils in check most of the day going 7 strong innings, while allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits. So the Phils would need some late heroics to pull this one out. In the top of the 3rd Jody Gerut singled in one run and Edgar Gonzalez tripled in a run ,after Raul Ibanez muffed his fly ball, and scored on a fielder's choice for a 3-0 Padres lead. In the top of the 5th Adrian Gonzalez slammed a solo homer for a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the 6th Chase Utley slugged a 2 run homer to cut it to 4-2. In the bottom of the 8th Jimmy Rollins, who didn't start the game, lined a pinch solo homer into the seats to cut it to 4-3. Finally in the bottom of the 9th following a leadoff single by Ryan Howard, Ibanez had a chance to redeem himself, and he did, crushing a game winning 2 run homer to lift the Phils to a 5-4 win. So the Phils move to 5-6 overall and can now at least finish the series tomorrow at an even 2-2.

In the top of the 5th Brian Giles doubled in a run for a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the 5th Myers himself doubled and scored on a sac fly by Shane Victorino to cut it to 3-2. In the bottom of the 6th Ryan Howard crushed a solo homer to tie it at 3. In the top of the 8th Nick Hundley singled in a run to put the Padres up again 4-3. In the bottom of the 8th Chase Utley clobbered a solo homer and Ibanez singled and scored on a sac fly by Pedro Feliz for a 5-4 lead. That set the stage for Brad Lidge to convert his 48th consecutive save in the top of the 9th. Sadly it was not to be. First Jody Gerut doubled and scored the tying on a fielders' choice, then Kevin Kouzmanoff stunned the Phillies faithful by blasting a 2 out 3 run homer to put San Diego up 8-5. In the bottom of the 9th the Phils again came up empty to finish off their 3rd consecutive loss and drop to 4-6 overall. These San Diego Padres are just too hot for anyone right now.

The Phils returned to the Bank tonight for the first time since the death of beloved announcer Harry Kalas. The night began with several tributes in Kalas' honor, including the naming of the tv broadcast booth as the Harry Kalas broadcast booth(the radio booth is already named after Richie Ashburn), among others. The Phils were looking to add to the tributes with a win over the visiting San Diego Padres, to get back to .500 at the Bank this season and back over .500 overall. With Cole Hamels on the mound the honorable win seemed destined to be a reality. However, Hamels again did have his best night, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings of work. For a while though it looked like that would be enough as the Phils were equally jarring to Padre's ace Chris Young, tagging him for 7 runs on 9 hits, but in the end it was not to be the Phils night. In the bottom of the 1st, Chase Utley slammed a 3 run homer and Chris Coste slapped a 2 run double for a quick 5-0 lead. In the top of the 3rd Luis Rodriguez launched a solo shot to cut it to 5-1. In the bottom of the 3rd Raul Ibanez tripled and scored on a single by Pedro Feliz for a 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the 4th Ryan Howard doubled in a run for a 7-1 lead. In the top of the 5th Scott Hairston lined a 2 run homer into the seats to cut it to 7-3. In the top of the 6th, Nick Hundley hit another 2 run homer to cut it to 7-5. It was still 7-5 heading into the 8th which with the Phils bullpen would seem to assure victory, but Padres weren't done yet and Ryan Madson just wasn't himself tonight. Jody Gerut singled in one run, and Hairston doubled in two more and suddenly San Diego was ahead 8-7 in the top of 8th. Brad Lidge managed to get it to the bottom of 9th with the score still 8-7, but Howard struck out leading off and Matt Stairs went down looking with one on and 2 out and the Phils had lost 8-7. So the Phils drop to 4-5 and will have to honor Harry with a win tomorrow instead after his memorial ceremony at the Bank early tomorrow morning.

The Flyers continued their opening round playoff series with the Penguins tonight in game 2. The Flyers played much better tonight but got unlucky late in the game. Marty Biron was spectacular with 46 saves out of the 49 shots he faced, and Braydon Coburn picked up two assists. In the though 46 saves just weren't quite enough for the Flyers on this night. Late in the 1st period Scott Hartnell scored off the power play for a 1-0 lead. Late in the 2nd period Bill Guerin tied it up at 1 for the Pens. Early in the 3rd period Darroll Powe scored for a 2-1 lead. From there Biron did everything in his power to push the Flyers to a win, but with just under 4 minutes to play Evgeni Malkin tied it up off the power play and the game wound up in overtime. There with about a minute and a half remaining in the overtime period, and the Pens holding a 5 on 3 advantage following a stupid penalty by Claude Giroux, for breaking another player's stick, Guerin scored to break the Flyers hearts and win it for Pittsburgh 3-2. So the Flyers trail 2-0 now and probably have only a slim chance of winning the series at this point, but you never know stranger things have happened.

The Eagles finally made a big offseason move today trading the lower of their 2 1st round picks, and a 4th round pick in this years draft, and an undisclosed pick in next year's draft, to the Buffalo Bills for left tackle Jason Peters and then signing Peters to a deal. Peters is a two time pro bowler and at 27 is still in the prime of his career. So on paper this is a great move for the Eagles as it finally completes the rebuilding of their offensive line(Tra Thomas signed elsewhere, and Jon Runyan is likely unavailable to anyone this season as he recovers from knee surgery). Presumably at this point with two new tackles, in Peters and Stacey Andrews and a healthy Shawn Andrews back at right guard, the Eagles could now have one of best offensive lines in the NFL. They also still have one first round pick left in the next weekend's draft with which to go after a running back or other offensive playmaker. Of course they could also use that pick a long with their 3rd round pick in a trade with the Cardinals for WR Anquan Boldin. Either way they're in good shape.

After two rainfilled afternoons, the Phils concluded their stay in Washington tonight. Joe Blanton, who was supposed to start yesterday,got the start tonight. Once again as in hirst first game Blanton was not able to put forth his best effort, but he was decent, allowing just 3 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings of work. Meanwhile his teammates didn't give him much support as the Phils plated just 2 runs on 5 hits on the day. So in the end the Phils just didn't quite have what it took to keep the Nats winless, but they did keep playing hard to the end. In the bottom of the 1st, Adam Dunn slammed a 3 run homerun for a 3-0 nat's lead. In the top of the 4th Raul Ibanez singled in a run to cut it to 3-1. In the top of the 5th Lou Marson doubled and scored on a sac fly to cut it to 3 -2. In the bottom of the 7th Josh Willingham slammed a solo homer for a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the 8th Elijah Dukes and Alberto Gonzalez each homered and Roger Bernadina and Ryan Zimmerman each singled in runs for an 8-2 lead. From there the Nat's bullpen closed out the Phils, as the Nats got their first win 8-2. So the Phils drop back to 4-4 overall and will look to bounce back tomorrow night at the Bank.

SIXERS NEWS
The Sixers finished the regular season in Cleveland tonight and seemingly caught a huge break as Lebron, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Mo Williams, and Ben Wallace all sat the night out. However, they stupidly allowed the Cavs to do one thing they still could to hurt the Sixers, and that is to shoot threes and lots of them. In all Cleveland hit 10 three pointers and that was really all that kept in the game. If the Sixers would have just stayed with their man, instead of triple teaming every guy who drove to the basket, they could have won easily. I guess they maybe they were trying to both win and expend as little energy as possible at the same time. In the end their lazy play probably caused them to have expend more energy they may have wanted, in order to eek out an overtime win. Frankly they should be embarrassed that they needed overtime to beat a bunch benchwarmers. Anyway, they got the win and I guess that's all that matters. 24 points from Iggy, 20 from Thad, and 30 from Andre Miller were just enough for the win. Despite all that scoring the Sixers actually trailed until late in the 4th quarter, but finally at that point they found themselves ahead by 3 and seemingly headed to victory with the score 98-95 and just 4 seconds remaining. Instead Thad fell down trying to defend Daniel Gibson, who then drilled the resulting open three to send the game into overtime. In overtime again the Sixers seemed safely ahead, but Andre Miller missed a pair of free throws that probably would have sealed it, leaving the Cavs down 111-110 and and yes 4 seconds left. This time Royal Ivey defended Gibson and forced him to lose control of the ball long enough to not get a shot off. So the Sixers finish the season 41-41, their first .500 or better record in years, and thanks to a Bulls loss earlier in the night, just good enough for the 6th seed in the East. So the Sixers will be play the Orlando Magic in the first round of the playoffs and although the Magic swept the season series, they were all close games, so the Sixers have a shot to beat them, even if it is a slim one.

Marty Biron was solid saving 29 of the 33 shots he faced, but the Flyers struggled to score all night, needing 8 power plays before finally lighting the lamp. So ultimately the Flyers did not put forth their best effort tonight and will need to play better if they expect to win this series. The Sixers welcomed the Celtics to the Wachovia center tonight hoping to catch a break and get a win, as with nothing left to play for, the Celtics were expected to use their starters only sparingly. Unfortunately, Paul Pierce kept annoyingly finding his way onto the court, and he alone with 7 three pointers was enough to thwart the Sixer's hopes of victory. Even Thaddeus Young , finally back in lineup tonight, couldn't save the Sixers despite 18 points and 3 steals. The Sixers' defense just wasn't good enough once again to win this one, as they allowed Boston to shoot 51% from the field and 56% from beyond the arc. It was a close game in the end only because Boston played about of half their starting lineup and only Pierce was still in the game at the end. The Sixers actually had the lead by 8 at half time with the score 58-50. Boston slowly cut into the Sixer's lead and by the halfway point of the 4th quarter they had themselves a lead. With 2 seconds to play and the Sixers possessing the ball, Boston was still leading by 2 with the score 100-98. Andre Iguodala took the inbounds pass and managed to get off a three from way beyond the arc amidst a swarm of defenders. Not surprisingly it fell short and the Sixers lost 100-98. So the Sixers drop to 40-41 overall and into 7th in the Eastern conference. At this point they cannot finish any lower than that but they can still get at least that 6th seed, if they can just figure out a way to win their last game of the season against the Cavaliers, and the Bulls lose their final game.

PHILLIES NEWS
I can't tell you how many times I have heard the old saying, "nothing lasts forever". I can tell you that until now I never believed it. I grew up listening to Harry Kalas call Phillies games and for as long as I can remember there was never a spring or summer night in the house when that familiar baritone was not heard reverberating from somewhere. While the players and other members of the franchise came and went, Harry was always there. No matter how bad things got with the team you knew you could still turn on the TV, hear his voice, and enjoy the game. Somewhere deep inside I always thought it would be that way every summer, but today at the age of 73, just hours before the Phillies game, Harry Kalas passed away in the broadcast booth getting ready for the game, just the way he probably would have wanted. It is often in this world, that you don't realize how much someone means to you until they are gone. That was true for me today. I did not know much a part of my life he'd become until I sat down to watch the Phils today and the voice wasn't there. I don't know how it will be to watch the phils the rest of the season, but it won't be the same. Harry wasn't just some hall of fame announcer to those of use who listened to him every night. He was so much more. The coverage of his death on TV today seemed to reaffirm as much. So often when a legendary figure passes away, some news anchor just reads off some short statement saying I was deeply saddened, he will be sorely missed etc; That was not the case today with HK. The amount of people seen or heard commenting on how Kalas touched and even changed their lives, not just on CSN, but on ESPN and all the News channels was simply amazing to me. It goes to show just how much he meant to so many. He was more than an announcer, has was one of us, just another fan watching the game with us in our living rooms every night, just like one of the family, a father, a brother, a friend. I would like to finish this brief tribute by expressing the shock and yes, sadness I felt upon hearing of his death today, but I know not the right words to express such feelings. I only know I wasn't ready to say good bye.
It almost seems inconsequential now to talk about how the Phils did today, but the show must go on. With heavy hearts, simply because Harry would have wanted them to play, the Phils took the field in Washington this afternoon for the first of 3 games with the Nationals. Fittingly, Jamie Moyer, the lone Phillie from the Philly area, got the start. He didn't have his best stuff, but Moyer manageed to tough out 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits, and that was enough for the determined Phils. In the bottom of the 1st, Adam Dunn doubled in a run for a 1-0 Nats lead. In the top of the 2nd, the Phils came right back with 2 runs on a bases loaded walk to Chris Coste and a sac fly by Moyer for a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 2nd, Cristian Guzman singled in a run to tie it at 2. In the top of the 3rd "the Flyin Hawaiian" Shane Victorino slammed a solo homer for a 3-2 lead. In the top of the 4th Jimmy Rollins slapped a 2 out double for a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the 4th Guzman singled in another run to cut it to 4-3. In the bottom of the 5th Elijah Dukes lined a solo homer into the seats to tie it at 4. In the top of the 7th, Ryan Howard crushed a 3 run homer, and Raul Ibanez followed a couple batters later with a solo homer for an 8-4 lead. In the bottom of the 7th Adam Dunn clobbered a 2 run homer to cut it to 8-6. In the top of the 8th Eric Bruntlett delivered a pinch double and scored on a sac fly by Victorino for a 9-6 lead. Finally in the bottom of the 9th, after allowing Ryan Zimmeran to hit a 2 run homer, Brad Lidge closed out the Nationals for his 2nd save of the season and a 9-8 Phils win. So the Phils move to 4-3 overall with their 3rd win in a row. They'll look to make it 4 in a row on Wednesday.

SIXERS NEWS
The Sixers traveled to Toronto tonight for a matchup with the lowly Raptors. Considering it was to be the only one of their season ending games against a non playoff team, it was imperative that they get the win. Once again their defense just wasn't good enough to pull it out. An 18 point 12 rebound night for Sammy Dalembert and a 23 point effort by Lou Williams were both wasted. An impressive night of offensive rebounding, with Sixers pulling down 22 of their 47 rebounds off the offensive glass, was also wasted. All told Toronto shot 53% from the field and when it mattered most they were able to get the scores they needed, while the Sixers could not. At the half the game was actually tied at 53. By the 4th quarter the Raptors were clinging to a one point lead with the score 81-80. Finally the 4th quarter went the Raptors way early, as they built up a 14 point lead with 6 minutes to play. The Sixers then were able to make one final push, but it was too little too late, and eventually they lost by 7 111-104. So the Sixers drop ro 40-40 overall, but remain 6th in the Eastern conference, via the tiebreaker over the Bulls. Also with the Miami Heat winning today, the Sixers can no longer get the 5th seed in the East.
PHILLIES NEWS
The Phils finished their series with the Rockies this afternoon. Chan Ho Park, as it turned out actually made his first start of the season today, rather than Tuesday. Unfortunately, he was shellacked, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, in just 3 and 1/3rd innings of work. Fortunately, the bullpen then preceded to toss 5 and 2/3rd's scoreless innings the rest of the way. Meanwhile, just like yesterday the Phils managed to mount a rally, racking up another 13 hits, again many of them occuring at just right time. In the bottom of the 1st, Brad Hawpe doubled in one run, and singles by Garret Atkins and Clint Barmes produced three more runs for a 4-0 Rockie's lead. In the top of the 2nd Ryan Howard doubled and scored on a single by Raul Ibanez to cut it to 4-2.In the bottom of the 2nd Dexter Fowler slammed a solo homer to for a 5-3 lead. In the top of the 4th, Chase Utley singled and scored on a single by Jayson Werth to cut it to 5-2. In the top of the 6th Werth slapped in another run to cut it to 5-3. In the top of the 8th Utley slammed a 2 run homer to knot it at 5. In the top of the 9th Matt Stairs clobbered a 2 run homer for a 7-5 lead. Finally in the bottom of the 9th Brad Lidge came in to record his 2nd save of the season, in closing out the 7-5 Pnils win. So the Phils move to 3-3 overall and seem to have turned things around.
FLYERS NEWS
The Flyers welcomed the New York Rangers to the Wachovia center this afternoon. They needed a win or a tie to clinch the 4th seed in the Eastern conference. For two periods it looked the 4th seed would be theirs. Then the Rangers posted a few late goals in the 3rd period and poof went that 4th seed. Marty Biron had 27 saves, and Danny Briere had a goal and an assist, but it was not enough. Early in the first period Claude Giroux scored for a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later Brandon Dubinsky scored to knot it up at 1 for the Rangers. A few minutes later Jeff Carter scored off the power play for a 2-1 lead. A couple minutes later Dubinksy scored again to knot it up at 2. Early in the 2nd period Briere scored for a 3-2 lead. Early in the 3rd period Sean Avery scored to knot it up again 3. A few minutes later Blair Betts scored for a 4-3 Ranger's lead. From there the Flyers had their opportunities to tie it up again and get the one point they needed, but Henrik Lundqvist came up with some big saves to preserve the win for the Rangers. So the Flyers finish the season 44-27-11 overall for 99 points and the 5th seed in the Eastern conference. Therefore the first round of the playoffs will begin in PittsBurgh for the Orange and Black.
