The Phils rebounded from a tough series in Seattle and answered all the detractors about their offensive production all in one inning tonight St. Louis. Despite 6 innings of 1 run from Roy Halladay the Phils appeared on their way to another loss before the Cardinal bullpen imploded in the 8th inning thanks some rare patience at the plate displayed by the Phils. The inning actually started with an easy flyout by Jimmy Rollins, then Shane Victorino singled, Chase Utley walked, and Ryan Howard and Placido Polanco were both hit by pitch to push across a game tying run. Then Raul Ibanez struck out and just when it seemed St.Louis might limit the damage, Ben Francisco slapped a pinch RBI single to continue the inning and then all heck broke loose. Carlos Ruiz walked, Micheal Martinez walked, Rollins singled, Victorino walked, Utley singled, Howard singled, and finally Wilson Valdez flied out to end the inning. In all the Phils scored 9 runs in the inning on just 5 hits, none of them extra base hits. Antonio Bastardo and David Herndon finished off the 10-2 win from there.

As usual Cole Hamels pitched more than well enough to win, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6 in 6 and 1/3rd innings. Unfortunately it didn't really matter on this Father's day afternoon as the Phils themselves managed just 3 hits and no runs scored. Ryan Howard had 2 of the 3 hits but there was no one on base for him. In the end the 3 hits weren't enough as the Phils fell to the Mariners 2-0.

Vance Worley meet King Felix. In his first start in the majors since being lit up by the Reds, Worley went up against the reigning AL CY Young award winner and low and with an assist from the bullpen, he out-dueled him. In 5 innings, Worley allowed just 1 run on 5 hits while Hernandez allowed 3 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings. Ryan Howard hit a deep sac fly in the 1st inning for a 1-0 lead. Shane Victorino slapped a 2 out 2 run double for a 3-1 lead. Finally after Micheal Stutes and Antonio Bastardo combined for scoreless frames in the 6th, 7th, and 8th inning, Victorino put the nail in Seattle's coffin with a 2 run shot for a 5-1 lead in the 9th inning. Ryan Madson closed things out from there and the Phils had their 45th win of the season and a 6 game lead in the NL East.

The Phils rode a 7 game winning streak coming into Seattle tonight, but they were no match for rookie of the year candidate Micheal Pineda, who held them to just 1 run on 2 hits in 6 innings. Meanwhile, Roy Oswalt allowed 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 3 in 6 and 1/3rd innings. Shane Victorino did launch a solo homer in the 8th to briefly spur hope of a Phils comeback, but they couldn't put anything together after that as they lost 4-2. Still despite the loss, they remain 5 games up in the NL East and lead the Majors in wins by 2 over the Red Sox.

The Phils continued their hot streak and the Marlins continued to flounder today in a day night doubleheader. In the first half of the doubleheader, Ryan Howard slapped an RBI double, Wilson Valdez lined a 3 run triple, and Jimmy Rollins slammed a 3 run homer and an RBI single, while Kyle Kendrick tossed 7 effective innings, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits and striking out 5. All together it was more than enough for another easy 8-1 win. Later in the 2nd half of the the doubleheader, Roy Halladay provided less than his best performance, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 8. However, his battery mate bailed him out. With 1 out and the Phils down 2 in the 9th, Carlos Ruiz singled to start a 2 run rally capped off by Shane Victorino's 2 run single. Later with 2 out in the 10th Ruiz rolled a game winning single back up the middle to cap the doubleheader sweep with a 5-4 win.

The Phils resumed their homestand tonight as they began an important series with the Marlins. Cole Hamels got the start in this one and was brilliant again, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits while striking 6 in 7 innings. He did leave at the beginning of the 8th with tightness in his back, but it didn't appear to be serious. Meanwhile the Phils had arguably their best offensive spurt of the season thus far, racking up 9 runs on 11 hits, including 4 homers. Ryan Howard got things started with a 2 run blast in the 1st. Later in the 3rd inning, Chase Utley added a 2nd 2 run shot. Dom Brown lined a solo shot in the 4th. Placido Polanco added a sac fly in the 5th. Jimmy Rollins added a 3rd 2 run jack in the 6th. Finally in the 7th Brown tatooed a solo bomb into the 2nd deck in right for a 9-1 lead and that would be all the Phils would need. David Herndon tossed 2 scoreless frames to finish night and the Phils 41st win of the season. With the win they move to 3.5 games up in the NL East and continue to lead the majors in wins.

Roy Oswalt allowed 3 runs in the 1st inning, but recovered nicely with 6 scoreless frames and 5 strikeouts to finish his day. Meanwhile, Ryan Howard keyed the offense going 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs. He got things started with an RBI double in the 1st inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Later in the 3rd inning, a single by Howard, a walk by Ben Francisco, and another single by Raul Ibanez cut it to 3-2. Finally in the 7th inning Howard laced a 2 run single up the middle for a 4-3 Phils lead. From there Micheal Stutes rolled through a 1-2-3 8th inning and Ryan Madson barely survived his 15th save of the season in the 9th, after another Geovanny Soto homer bid went just foul. The 4-3 win is the Phils 40th of the season thus far and keeps them 2 games up in the NL East.

Cliff Lee was outstanding again this afternoon and this time he didn't even need his curveball. Using mostly fastballs Lee shut down the Cubs, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 7 in 8 innings. Meanwhile, Chase Utley keyed the suddenly resurgent Phils' offense, going 2 for 5 with 4 RBIs. He got things started with a 2 run double in the 1st inning. Then he helped move along a 2 run rally in the 7th inning, with Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez each collecting 2 out RBIs. Finally in the 8th inning Shane Victorino blooped an RBI single, and Utley capped the scoring for the day with a 2 run blast to put the Phils up 7-1. From there Antonio Bastardo retired the side in order in the 9th and the Phils picked up their league leading 39th win of the season.

No losing streak is safe when you've got Roy Halladay on the mound. After dropping a heartbreaker to the Cubs last night, it was Halladay's duty to ensure the Phils would have a short memory of it. Ultimately he delivered with 7 scoreless innings, while striking out 9 and allowing just 6 hits. Unfortunately the Phils bullpen nearly gave it all back again before pair of young guns saved the day. In between, Shane Victorino scored on a fielder's choice in the 1st, Dom Brown bashed a 2 run homer in the 2nd inning, and Placido Polanco slugged a grand slam, the 100th homer of his career, in the 7th inning. So the Phils went into the 8th inning ahead 7-0 and seemingly assured of victory. Not so fast. Jose Contreras and J.C Romero combined to allow 5 runs on 4 hits while registering just 1 out in the 8th. Finally the rookie, Micheal Stutes, was forced into action and he got out of the inning with a 7-5 lead intact. He then got the benefit of a spectacular strike em out throw em out double play from Carlos Ruiz to Chase Utley to start the 9th. Young Antonio Bastardo followed with a strikeout of Carlos Pena to close out a more exciting than it needed to be 7-5 win. The win is Halladay's league leading 9th of the season.

After closing out another series last night the Phils look to keep it going as the Cubs came to town to continue the homestand. Early on it looked like it would be another in a long line series opening wins this season. Jimmy Rollins slammed a 3 run homer in the 2nd and Kyle Kendrick opened the night with 3 scoreless frames. Unfortunately a rain delay got in the way after that, ending Kendrick's night and cooling off the Phils bats to the point where they failed to register a hit from the 5th to the 9th inning. Still the bullpen was good enough to preserve a 3-2 lead heading into the 9th and with Ryan Madson perfect in save opportunities on the season, victory seemed a formality. It wasn't to be though. Geovanny Soto burned Madson with a 1 out solo homer to tie things at 3. The Phils were then lucky to get into extra innings after a Tyler Colvin was called back on fan interference. The Phils then came within a spectacular play by Carlos Pena of ending things in the bottom of the 10th, but thanks to the rain delay the Phils had only David Herndon left in bullpen for the extra frames. So he had to bat for himself with the bases loaded on the corners and 2 out in the 10th and he failed to get the winning run home. From there a Placido Polanco error put Chicago 4-3 in the 11th and Carlos Ruiz was stranded in the bottom of the 11th to cap of a disheartening 4-3 loss to the Cubbies. They'll get em tomorrow I guess.

No hitting no problem tonight. Not with Cole Hamels on the mound. It's been a banner year thus far for the new lefty and tonight was no exception. He tossed 8 scoreless innings, while striking out 9 and allowing just 6 hits. The closest the Dodgers came to scoring off him was in the 7th inning when Matt Kemp singled with Andre Ethier on second and nobody out, but a strong throw from Dom Brown thwarted the sure RBI, freezing Ethier at 3rd. Hamels then pitched his way out of the inning. L.A again put runners on the corners in the 8th inning, but Cole got out of it again, this time forcing Ethier into an inning ending groundout. Meanwhile, Ryan Howard lined a homer to right in the 6th, and Shane Victorino tripled and scored on a fielder's choice in 7th to give the Phils a 2-0 lead heading into the 9th. There Ryan Madson locked down his 14th save and the Phils 37th win.

The Phils came in looking for their 3rd straight win but it wasn't to be as uncharacteristically bad defense, including errors by Roy Oswalt, and Chase Utley, doomed them to failure. Aside from his error Roy Oswalt had an okay night but was still a little off in allowing 4 runs on 8 hits. As bases loaded walk in the 2nd, and Chase Utley's 7th inning triple gave the Phils their only runs of the night but it wasn't enough to offset all the things that went wrong throughout the night and in the end the Phils settled for a 6-2 loss to the Dodgers.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers have traded left wing Matt Clackson, their 2012 3rd round pick, and a conditional draft pick to the Phoenix Coyotes for the negotiating rights to goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. This simply means they have exclusive rights to negotiate a contract with him from now until he becomes a free agent. If they don't sign him by then he'll likely go else where. Right now the Flyers don't have the cap room to sign Bryzgalov to the contract he'll likely ask for. So they'll have their work cut out for them to first create salary cap space and get Bryzgalov signed.

Roy Halladay got the Phils out of their rut this afternoon with 7 strong innings. He allowed a 2 run homer right off the bat in the 1st inning, but then tossed 6 scoreless frames as the Phils battled back. A Raul Ibanez sac fly in the 4th inning cut it to 2-1 and then it looked like Dom Brown had line an RBI single to tie things at 2, but his line drive hit off the umpire making it a dead ball and nullifying the run. Wilson Valdez then grounded into a double play to end the inning and it looked like the Phils bad luck at PNC Park would continue. Instead the Phils got right back at it in the 5th, Ryan Howard sac flied in a run after a 11+ pitch at bat, and Carlos Ruiz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Phils a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish. Later Placido Polanco added an RBI single in the 6th, Howard singled in a run in the 8th, and Shane Victorino and Howard each collected RBI singles in the 9th for a 7-3 lead. That was more than enough for Ryan Madson to nail down the win in the 9th. With the win the Phils move to 36-24 overall and 3 games up in the NL East.

Cole Hamels continued his outstanding play of late, allowing just 1 run on 1 hit, while striking out 4 in 8 brilliant innings. Unfortunately he didn't get much help from his teammates. Jimmy Rollins produced the Phils only run, singling, stealing second, and scoring on a single by Chase Utley in the 6th. The Phils were punchless after that, just as they always are at Heinz Field. Eventually in the 12th, a bad bounce single over Utley's glove gave the Pirates a 2-1 win. Maybe someday the Phils will figure out how hot hit at PNC Park but until then there will be more days like this one.

Roy Oswalt was pretty good, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 3, but the desperate Phils pulled him after just 5 innings, in hopes of sparking their suddenly stagnant offense. It almost worked but with 2 out in the 6th and the Phils down 2-1, Dom Brown was robbed of a pinch go ahead double on a diving catch by Laynce Nix. The Phils never seemed to recover from the shock of that missed opportunity and eventually fell to the Nats 2-1. Ryan Howard was responsible for the Phils lone run, doubling and scoring on an error in the 2nd inning. Micheal Stutes and Antonio Bastardo backed up Oswalt with a combined 3 scoreless innings. Despite the loss the Phils remain 2 games up in the NL East as the Marlins lost tonight as well.

Cliff Lee just didn't have it tonight. His normal pinpoint just wasn't there as he walked batters and missed his spots. As a result the Nationals touched him up for 6 runs on 7 hits in just 5 and 1/3rd innings. Meanwhile, Jason Marquis held the Phils to just 2 runs on 8 hits in 6 and 1/3rd innings. The 2 runs came on back to back solo homers by John Mayberry Jr. and Dom Brown in the 5th inning and that was pretty much the only bright spot for the Phils on this night. Even the bullpen struggled a bit with Danys Baez and Mike Zagurski(called up to replace Vance Worley, at least for now) combining to allow 4 runs on 5 hits. In all it was really the Phils worst night of the season thus far, but with John Lannan, 0-10 against the Phils, going for the Nationals tomorrow, they should be able to shrug this off and get back on track with a win tomorrow.

First in the 4th inning, Ibanez and Howard both bashed solo homers, while Dom Brown slapped an RBI single for a 3-2 lead. Later with the Phils down 4-3 in the 7th, Howard lined an RBI single and Ibanez added a sac fly to give Halladay a 5-4 lead he would not relinquish. The Phils and Vance Worley went for the sweep this afternoon in New York but it wasn't to be as Worley was rocked for 8 runs on 12 hits in just 3 innings. Sometimes is just isn't your day and it wasn't for Worley in this one. This was first time he had faced a team that had already seen him and he pretty much through the same pitches he did the last time around. So it's not hard to understand why he struggled. Moving forward he'll have to learn how to mix up his pitches a little better. As for his teammates they didn't give up when behind, managing yet another 8th inning rally but this time the mountain was just too high to climb. Placido Polanco slapped an RBI single to put the Phils on the board in the 3rd. Then in the 8th, Raul Ibanez crushed a solo homer, and Dane Sardinha lined an RBI double and scored on a single by Dom Brown to cut the Met lead to 9-4. Later in the 9th, Ben Francisco crunched an RBI double to cut it to 9-5, but John Mayberry Jr. struck out after that to end it. Regardless of the final result, the Phils still won the series and will remain in 1st place.
