PHILLIES NEWS

For the 2nd straight the New York Mets denied the Phils 4th straight division title. Cole Hamels got the start and after his brilliance earlier this week it would seem to be a foregone conclusion that the Phils would clinch today. However, Cole was just off his game in this one, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits in the 4 innings of work. It was truly a rude awakening for Cole to stay focused for the remainder of the season and avoid anymore struggles like this one.

Meanwhile, the Phils offense again struggled to muster run support for Cole. By the time Chase Utley finally slammed a 3 run homer to get the Phils on the board and cut the lead to 5-3 in the 5th, Cole was already out of the game. From there the Phils had numerous opportunities to eke out a few more runs and forge at least a tie, but like that last night they couldn't advantage of their chances. Eventually they succumbed to the Mets again 5-3. Luckily, the Braves lost this afternoon as well so the Phils magic number drops to 1, meaning a win or a Braves loss here on out clinches the division
