PHILLIES NEWS

The Phillies finally got an off-day today after playing 20 games in 20 nights, so rather than complain about how the Phillies played tonight I will preview tomorrow night's game which begins a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park with the division leading Mets. At the present time the Phillies are second in the division 6.5 games behind the Mets, thus the media and many fans feel this series is make or break time for the Phillies as far as winning the division is concerned, its one of those things where if you lose the series you put yourself in an insurmountable hole, and if you win the series you keep yourself in the running for now. I personally feel that this series really doesn't mean anything. Either way the best the Phillies can be after this series is 3.5 games back which as far as I am concerned just isn't enough to get them back into the race to win the division, even this early in the season. The fact that the Phillies are already 6.5 games back is simply inexplicable to me. As talented as this team should be offensively, they should at least be within a couple games of first. I mean it's not like the Mets have a huge advantage over the Phillies in any one department. Both teams are suffering from injuries to their starting rotations, both have reasonably good bullpens, and both have starting lineups abundant in offensive talent. There is no reason why the Phillies aren't contending a little better with the Mets.

I think this is a huge weekend for the Phillies, if they loose all three I do not know if they can rebound with the starting / middle relief pitching that they currently have on this team. The Mets are starting to pull away from the rest of the NL East and unless the Phillies make some major trades before the deadline (which they won't) it is going to start looking like football season around Philly starting in August 1st.

Please understand that I also think that this series with the Mets is huge, based on what is on the line with it. I just think that when the season is over and everything is all said and done we will be able to look back at this series with the Mets and say that it didn't really mean anything after all because the Phillies never really had a chance to win the series anyway.
