PHILLIES NEWS

Another night with the Mets and more bad pitching and defense for the Phils. If you thought Ryan Madson was bad last night than Brett Myers was worse tonight. Everything that could have gone wrong for Myers did. In a mere 2 and 2/3rds innings of work tonight he was roughed up for 6 runs and 9 hits. Yes the Phillies defense did struggle again, committing three errors for the second night in a row, but even without the errors Myers' numbers would not be much better. The Phillies offense was also not much better, as just like last night they squandered opportunities with runners in scoring position. First in the second inning, when the score was still just 3-0 and Phillies had two on and 1 out for David Bell. Bell hit a long line drive to center field but it was snared by Carlos Beltran who then caught Ryan Howard tryng to tag up from second, despite the fact that his throw missed both cutoff men. Later in the 4th inning with the score now 7-2 following a rain delay, David Bell had another chance to do some damage and get the Phils back in the game with a man on second and one out, but again he failed and Chris Coste followed with the final out of the inning and Phillies never really had a chance after that as the Mets eventually tacked on three more runs for a final score of 9-3. It looks as if my prediction a couple posts ago that the Phillies would not win the division is going to come true, but heck if the Phillies keep playing like this they can forget about the playoffs all together. Charlie Manuel better figure out a way to light a fire under this team or they are in big trouble. He can't possibly be happy with the way his team is playing and I don't know how he tolerated it these last couple of nights. In other news the Phillies have finally answered the question everyone has been talking about for a while. They announced today that they are recalling Scott Mathieson from AA reading to take Jon Lieber's spot in the rotation for now and to start the game on Saturday. Whoever this kid is I hope someone calls him and reminds him to bring his fielding glove, because obviously the guys playing behind him aren't going to make all the plays for him.

what are your thoughts on the World Cup...

As you know this blog is geared toward Philly area sports so I don't really talk things going outside of Philly, but in your case I am willing to make an exception. First of all let just say I not biggest expert on soccer, in fact I didn't even really start watching soccer all that much until the 2002 world cup when the U.S made their first quarter-final run. As for this year's world cup I have watched only a handful of matches, but I have seen a lot of the highlights so I will give some thoughts on what I have seen so far.

1. If you were to ask me to pick the winner of the cup, I would go with Spain, they beat was supposed to be a good Ukraine team 4-0 in their opener and look unstoppable right now.
2. From what I have seen the best team from South America in this year's World Cup is Ecuador not Brazil. They were red hot during qualifying and in fact beat Brazil. Now they are still red hot and with two easy wins over Costa Rica and Poland to open their run, they have already advanced to the second round. If they beat Germany and go into the second round as the top team in group A watch out.
3.The US in big trouble. I had high hopes for them coming into this world but they were humiliated in their opener by the Chezch Republic 3-0. They can still win their last two games against Italy and Ghana to advance with 6 points, but with a -3 goal differential, second worst of all 32 teams currently playing, those 6 points may not be enough.

you are very welcome. I have admit I also didn't watch much of the game after the rain delay and the 4th inning, but I saw all of the highlights afterwards, so I was able to give you the update.

thanks again for the complement, but I don't know if I could write a whole book. I mean I don't really like to start things that take a long time to finish

Lots of insight - I think that the World Cup has potential to attract a decent following, but the US better step up and show us what they got...however,right now, I think that even the men's soccer team could beat the Phillies.

You are very right the World Cup can attract decent following in the states this year but only if the team has another good showing, but I think that even the Phillies could beat them right now, because even the Phillies have scored more than they have in last couple days
