Bad news for the Flyers tonight as they headed to New Jersey where they haven't won in 4 years to face off against the Devils. As expected the Orange and Black took it on the chin and their dramatic winning streak came to an end tonight. Marty Biron got the start in goal again, but the game was such a back and forth see-saw battle that his impact on the game was all but nullified. So let's jump right into it. In the first period of play Vinny Prospal gave the Flyers the early 1-0 lead about midway through the period. Then Johnny Oduya rapidly scored 2 successive goals late in the period to put New Jersey up 2-1. Early in the 2nd period of play Jamie Langenbrunner scored for a 3-1 Devil's lead. Then midway through the period Jim Dowd scored for the Flyers to cut the lead to 3-2. Midway through the 3rd period of play Randy Jones scored to tie at 3 for the Flyers. Then late in the period Brian Gionta and Mike Knuble each scored to send the game into overtime tied at 4. There neither team scored in the overtime period and the game went into a shootout. In first round of the shootout Mike Richards failed to score for the Flyers while Brian Gionta was successful for the Devils. In the 2nd round of the shootout Jeff Carter was successful for the Flyers while Patrick Elias was successful for the Devils. Finally in the 3rd round of the shootout Danny Briere was successful and briefly kept the game alive, before Jamie Langenbrunner successfully scored for the Devils to end it. So the Flyers took the tough 5-4 loss, and drop to 39-28-11 overall, but remain 4th in the Atlantic division and 7th in the Eastern conference, one point ahead of 8th place Boston, and 3 points ahead of 9th place Washington.
