FLYERS NEWS
Uggghhh, after yesterday's heartbreaker it didn't seem like things could possibly get any worse for the Orange and Black, but in an afternoon matinee against the Pittsburgh Penguins, they most definitely got a lot worse. Marty Biron got the start in goal and was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 8 shots, no that's not a typo, in favor of Antero Niittymaki, who didn't do much better allowing 4 goals on 28 shots. You can probably imagine at this point how the game went. In the first period of play, faster than you could say 2-0 Penguins, it was 2-0 Penguins, as Petr Sykora and Evgeni Malkin each scored. In the second period of play, Tyler Kennedy quickly made it 3-0 Penguins and Biron skated to the bench. Then late in the period, Mike Knuble scored to briefly cut the lead to 3-1, but it would be the Flyers only bright spot of the night, as Evgeni Malkin and Marian Hossa each scored within a minute of each other, following the Knuble goal, for a 5-1 Pen's lead. From there the carnage only continued, and rather than continuing to dispense with the gory details, I'll simply say that when the dust finally settled the Flyers had been thoroughly embarrassed 7-1. So the Flyers drop to 35-28-10 overall, but remain 4th in the Atlantic division and for now, since the Sabres didn't play today, 8th in the Eastern conference, but only by a point. Seriously, though at this point this team doesn't deserve to make the playoffs and i wouldn't be surprised if they don't get in.
