The Sixers struggled much of the night before rallying late at home against the Rockets. Jrue Holiday was the man with 24 and 12 assists, Thad Young was huge again with 22 and 9 rebounds, Lou Williams was solid with 15 and 5 assists, Spencer Hawes and Jodie Meeks each chipped in with 12 and Andre Iguodala fell just short of triple double with 9, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds. The Sixers outscored Houston 32-27 in the 3rd quarter and 24-15 in the 4th quarter as they rallied ahead and pulled away late to win 108-97. Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is now 1.

Brian Boucher stopped 34 of 36 shots but it didn't matter as the Flyers went 0 for 1 on the power play and managed just 1 goal on 27 shots in a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Bruins. Kris Versteeg scored the only goal in the loss. If they hope to finish the season atop the Eastern conference the Orange and Black will to start avoiding losses like these going foward.

After back to back tough losses the Orange and Black desperately needed to come out on top tonight as they lowly Islanders visited the Wells Fargo center. Although the penalty kill had a perfect night, on the whole the Flyers weren't that great defensively. Once again Sergei Bobrovsky was great stopping 36 of 37 shots otherwise this might have been another tough loss. Meanwhile, James Van Reimsdyk and Jeff Carter helped the Flyers build a nice early lead. About 8 minutes into the 1st period Claude Giroux setup Jeff Carter for a 1-0. Then Kris Versteeg setup JVR for a 2-0 lead. After New York cut it to 2-1, JVR struck again off assists from Andrej Meszaros and Sean O'Donnell for a 3-1 lead at the 1st intermission. Neither team scored in the 2nd period. Then halfway through the 3rd period Danny Briere and Giroux teamed to setup JVR for his first career hat trick and a 4-1 lead. From there Bob held off the last few Islander charges and the Orange and Black held on for an important 4-1 win. With the win the Flyers move to 100 points on the season and remain the top team in the Eastern conference and the Atlantic division by 2 points.

SIXERS

After pulling out a win over the Hawks the Sixers faced a much sterner test tonight in Miami in a possible playoff preview. Despite a good effort on both sides of the floor, they failed the test. The hobbled Andre Iguodala was just no match for Lebron James and the Sixers just don't have anyone who can cover Dwayne Wade. Together that duo powered the Heat past the Sixers in the latter stages of the game. The Sixers didn't make it easy though, on either side of the floor. Defensively, they racked up 10 steals and forced Miami into 15 turnovers. Offensively, they shot a decent 46% from the field and 36% from beyond, as 6 Sixers scored in double figures. Lou Williams again led the way with 24 off the bench, Thad Young had 15, and 8 rebounds, also off the bench, Jodie Meeks had 14, Jrue Holiday and Spencer Hawes each had 13, and Andre Iguodala had 10 but was clearly too bothered by his bad knee to score more.

That scoring and stealing twice allowed the Sixers to jump out by leads of 8 or more early in the 1st quarter and early in the 4th quarter, but each time Lebron and Dwade turned it on when necessary and the Sixers had no answer. Despite a brave battle down the stretch the Sixers eventually bowed out 111-99. So if possible they'd probably like to avoid Miami in the first round.

The Flyers got outworked tonight as they entertained the Penguins. Considering Pittsburgh remains without Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, the Flyers have no excuse for getting outworked. Fortunately, the spectacular play of Sergei Bobrovsky help them avoid a total failure. Bob faced 31 and stopped 30 of them, at times incredibly, just because he had to be. Take Bob and this might have been a very embarrassing night for the Orange and Black. Instead with him sprawling and diving for stops and with Mike Richards' score with just under 5 minutes to play in the 1st period, the Flyers were at least able to get to overtime. Neither team scored in overtime and the game went into a shootout. Danny Briere scored again in the shootout but Bob ran out of magic and was beaten badly in the last 2 rounds as the Flyers fell 2-1.

Coming into tonight the Sixers trailed the 5th spot in the Eastern conference by just 3.5 games. Win tonight against the slumping Hawks and they'd pull within 2.5 games. For a while it didn't look like that was going to happen. Atlanta was hot from everywhere and the Sixers didn't seem to have an answer for them. Still, as well as the Hawks played they couldn't pull away from the Sixers. The Sixers shot 48% from the field and an amazing 55% from beyond. Not surprisingly with that shooting they wound up with 7 guys in double figures. Lou Williams actually led the way with 17 off the bench, Andre Iguodala and Thad Young each had 16, Jodie Meeks went 5 of 6 from beyond and wound up with 15, Elton Brand had 13 and 11 rebounds, Jrue Holiday had 12 and 5 assists and finally Spencer Hawes had 10 to round out the scoring.

All that together was enough to keep the Sixers close for 3 quarters and then when they needed the most they were pick it up on D in the 4th. There they outscored Atlanta 31-20 as they rallied ahead with 10 minutes to play en route to a big 105-100 win.

FLYERS NEWS

After pulling out a win over Dallas in their last game the Flyers returned to the Wells Fargo center tonight to begin arguably their most important homestand of the season. Unfortunately it didn't quite get off to the start they were hoping for as they entertained the Ovechkinless Caps. Defensively they were pretty good, holding Washington to just 23 shots on goal. The goaltending was not so good with Sergei Bobrovsky allowing 3 goals on just 9 shots in 20 minutes. Brian Boucher was better stopping 13 of the Caps last 14 shots but that wasn't quite enough for the win. Thanks Bob's struggled the Flyers trailed 3-0 early in the 2nd period. About 8 minutes into the 2nd period Kris Versteeg finally put the Orange and Black on the board. Then in the final seconds of the 2nd Andreas Nodl setup Claude Giroux to cut it to 3-2.

Halfway through the 3rd period Giroux returned the favor as Nodl tied things up at 3. Later with about 6 minutes to play Kimmo Timonen and Ville Leino teamed to setup Danny Briere for a 4-3 lead. After that with just over 3 minutes to play Boosh whiffed on a point shot from the blue line tying things up at 4 and eventually forcing overtime. Neither team scored in overtime, forcing a shootout. Ville Leino and Danny Briere each scored in the shootout but Boosh beaten by all 3 shooters he faced and the Flyers lost a tough one 5-4.

FLYERS NEWS

The Orange and Black came into tonight in Dallas needing a win to clinch a playoff berth. Thanks to their first consistent effort in some time they were able to get the win they needed. Against the desperate Stars the Flyers defense really did a good job limiting them to just 30 shots on goal. In a spectacular effort Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 of the 30. Meanwhile, Andrej Meszaros picked up 2 assists to key the Flyers offense. First with about a minute and 20 left in the first period he teamed up with Matt Carle to assist Jeff Carter for a 1-0 lead. Then about a minute and 20 into the 2nd period he teamed with Carle again to assist Mike Richards for a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately the lead didn't hold up but the Flyers did at least manage to hang on for overtime. Neither team scored in the overtime to force a shootout.

In the shootout Claude Giroux scored in the 2nd round and looked like it would be the game winner before Mike Ribeiro beat Bob in the 3rd round to extend the game. From the sprawling Bobrovsky kept the Flyers alive until Ville Leino finally scored in the 6th round and Bob followed with another save to cap off the 3-2 Flyer win. With the win the Flyers clinch a playoff spot with 10 games left to decide what their seed will be. Considering they didn't clinch a playoff spot until the final game of the season last year, that's a pretty big thing to get out of the way.

SIXERS NEWS

Nursing a sore knee, Andre Iguodala was forced to sit out as the Sixers finished their road trip in Portland. While they were able to overcome his absence on the offensive end the defense simply didn't hold up without him. Portland simply torched them from all angles, shooting 51% from the field, 47% from beyond, and 86% from the line. Also Gerald Wallace and Wesley Matthews were just about unstoppable with 25 and 28 respectively. Despite all that the Sixers managed to hang around for 3 quarters with 50% shooting from the field, 47% shooting from beyond, and 87% shooting from the line of their own. Thanks to that shooting 6 Sixers managed double figures. Lou Williams led the way with 24 off the bench, while Thad Young and Andres Nocioni also added 19 and 10 off the bench respectively. Jodie Meeks was top scorer among the starters, drilling 3 treys and winding up with 17, while Elton Brand chipped in with 10 and 9 rebounds. The Sixers came into tonight needing only a win over the lowly Kings to finally move into the 6th place in the Eastern conference. Thanks to mostly poor play by the Kings they did indeed get the win and the new seeding. The Kings really were aweful all night long. They shot just 34% from the field, and 27% from beyond. Despite getting to the free throw line twice many times as the Sixers they shot 60% percent and derived no real benefit from that advantage. They also turned the balled over a whopping 21 times, while getting victimized by 16 Sixer steals. The Sixers for their part weren't great either, but more than good enough.

They only shot 44% from the field but shot a solid 43% from beyond as 4 Sixers scored in double figures. Jrue Holiday led the way with 15, 5 assists, and 9 rebounds, while Andre Iguodala added 13, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds, Elton Brand had 10 and 6 rebounds and Lou Williams chipped in off the bench for a big 14. In the end that little bit of scoring and strong defense was enough to allow the Sixers to lead pretty much the whole way en route to an easy 102-80 victory. With win the Sixers move a half a game ahead of the Knicks for the 6th in the East and pull within 3 games of 5th in the East.

In the last couple months the Flyers have the been the picture of inconsistency and tonight in Atlanta was no different. Things started out spotty for the Orange and Black with only Brian Boucher's 17 saves keeping them in it through the 2 periods. Danny Briere also did his best to keep the Flyer's afloat. First he teamed with Matt Carle to assist Claude Giroux on a game tying score halfway through the 1st period. Later in the 2nd period Briere himself got an assist from Jeff Carter as he tied things up at 2 before Atlanta scored again for a 3-2 lead heading into the 3rd period. Finally in the 3rd period the Flyers woke up and played their best, but it was a little too late. They held Atlanta to just 3 shots on goal in the final period, all stopped by Boucher. Meanwhile the Orange and Black put 11 shots on the Atlanta net before Briere again deposited the equalizer. Neither team managed a score in overtime to force a shootout. After back to back debilitating losses the Sixers were desperate for a win tonight to avoid going 0-3 on their current road trip and more importantly avoid falling back to .500 on the season. Fortunately they reverted back to form just in the nick of time to avoid both. Furthermore, the Clippers have been struggling a bit lately, which only made things easier for the Sixers. Defensively, they did a solid job, limiting L.A to just 30% shooting from beyond holding and down Blake Griffin to just 14 points on just 3 of 12 shooting. The Clipper also killed themselves by shooting just over 50% from the line and turning the ball over 17 times.

The Sixers meanwhile shot over 40% from beyond and 82% from the line, while turning the ball over just 11 times and that really gave the . In all 6 Sixers scored in double figues, led by Jodie Meeks 22 on 5 of 8 shooting from beyond. Jrue was next with 20 and 9 assists, while Elton Brand powered through 19 and 12 rebounds. Coming off close to their worst loss of the season, the Sixers figured to play much better tonight in Utah. Unfortunately for about 3 quarters it was more of the same, basically just a lot of mistakes, missed opportunities, and a lack of energy on the Sixer's side of the floor. Eventually the Sixers did finally wake up in the 4th quarter, but it still wasn't really a great effort overall. Defensively they were probably good enough to win for the most part, but offensively it was a struggle as they shot just 42% from the field and 38% from beyond, with just 5 Sixers in double figures. Andre Iguodala led the way with 23 and Lou Williams chipped in with 22 off the bench to spearhead a late rally that saw the Sixers erase a 21 point deficit and go up by 3 in the final seconds.

Jodie Meeks, who scored 17, then missed a free throw to preserve the 3 point and Utah was able to tie it up. Andre Iguodala missed a pull up J for win after that and the game went into overtime where the Sixers ran out of gas and fell 112-107.

What's worse? Watching your team get blown out or watching them blow a huge lead late? After tonight's contest between the Flyers and the Thrashers I would have to say the latter. For the most part this was a dominating performance by the Orange and Black. Through 2 periods Ville Leino was 2/3rds of the way to a hat trick, Mike Richards already had 2 assists, and Sergei Bobrovsky was having an outstanding night, stopping all 21 shots he faced. Then it all came crashing down in the 3rd period. Bob quickly lost the shutout early in the 3rd as the lead dwindled to 3-2, but it didn't seem like it would matter as Richards notched his 3rd assist of the night and Leino completed the hat trick for a 4-2 lead. That was it, game, set, and match right? Not on this night.

As has happened so many times this season, the Flyers basically shut it down after taking the 2 goal lead and just attempted to hold on defense. Unfortunately they couldn't do it this time. A power play goal by Tobias Enstrom with 3 minutes left cut it to 4-3. It stayed until the final seconds where it looked like the Flyers would wrap things up with an empty netter. Instead with 45 seconds left Kris Versteeg messed up a clearing attempt in the Flyers zone and Andrew Ladd made him pay with the game tying tally. From there the game went into overtime and just over a minute into overtime Atlanta complete their grand larceny and with a Ron Hainsey goal to finish a disheartening 5-4 loss. Yep it doesn't get any worse than that.

SIXERS NEWS

Playing their 5th game in 4 nights after an emotional win over the Celtics, the Sixers simply had nothing left in the tank physically or emotionally tonight in Milwaukee and it showed. Only 4 Sixers scored in double figures with Lou Williams 16 off the bench the highlight. Andre Iguodala also had 10 and 5 assists, Jodie Meeks had 13 and Evan Turner contributed another 10 off the bench. Aside from that it was all bad for the Sixers in this one. They shot just 39% from the field and 37% from beyond while turning the ball over a highly unusual 20 times. Their defensive was also unusually bad, allowing Milwaukee to shoot 52% from the field and from beyond. That's just not going to get it done most nights and it didn't tonight either. The Sixers were actually in it for a quarter but seemed to have nothing left after that as the Bucks rolled away to a thumping 102-74 win. Hopefully this was just an off night and won't signify the start of anything.

The Sixers finally got a signature win against an Eastern conference opponent tonight as the Celtics visited the Wells Fargo center. SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers continued with their winning ways this evening as the Warriors visited the Wells Fargo center. Defensively, they struggled to contain the fastbreaking Warriors who shot close to 50% from the floor. Instead the Sixers adapted and starting running themselves. They just did it a little bit better.with 6 players in double figures to the Warriors 4. Andre Iguodala led the way with his second straight triple double(15, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists) while Evan Turner and Thad Young both came off the bench for 20 and 7 rebounds. Elton Brand was also solid with 12 and 5 rebounds, Jrue Holiday had 16, 7 assists and 8 rebounds, and Jodie Meeks drilled a pair of treys and wound up with 11. Add it all up and you've got a thrilling 125-117 overtime win and perhaps the turning point in Evan Turner's career as a Sixer.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers played their worst game of the season this afternoon, suffering a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of the stinking Rangers. Suffice it to say everything that could have gone wrong for them today did. If you missed this game consider yourself among the lucky ones because it was about as ugly as it gets. The only positive out of a loss like this is that the Orange and Black can't possibly sink any lower, with this loss coupled with 6 losses in their last 8 and 4 overall. They did just need to get healthy and figure out how everything wrong fast or its going to be a long rest of the season.
