Roy Halladay has been named the starting pitcher for the National League in the 2011 MLB All Star game. Unfortunately, with Shane Victorino and Placido Polanco both out of the game with injuries, Cole Hamels ineligible because he pitched Sunday, and Cliff Lee virtually ineligible having pitched Saturday, Halladay may well be the only Phil to play in the 2011 All-Star game. There is a slight chance Lee could pitch, but it would only be a quick outing.

The Phils finished their first half of the season in grand fashion this afternoon. Cole Hamels allowed just 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6 in 8 innings on the way to his 11th win. Meanwhile, the Phils destroyed Braves pitching on the afternoon, to the tune of 14 runs on 20 hits. Things actually started slowly for them with only a few runs though first 6 innings, but from then on it seemed every pitch a Brave threw went for a hit or a run. Raul Ibanez was the leading man by far, going 2 for 5 with 6 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Micheal Martinez also had 4 hits and 2 runs scored, John Mayberry Jr. had 3 hits and 4 RBIs, Dom Brown had 3 hits, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored, Jimmy Rollins had 3 hits an RBI and a run scored, and finally Ryan Howard chipped in with 2 hits, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. So in the end when the dust finally settled the Phils had demolished Atlanta 14-1 to claim a 3.5 game lead and a franchise record tying 57th win heading into the All-Star break.

Roy Halladay fought through a rain delay to deliver 7 solid innings, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 7. Meanwhile, Wilson Valdez sac fly in the 2nd and Carlos Ruiz solo shot in the 4th helped the Phils twice rally back from a 1 run down. Micheal Stutes, Antonio Bastardo, and Juan Perez combined outstandingly to keep the score knotted at 2 through 9 and 1/2 innings. Perez's performance was especially outstanding, in fact it was a perfect 9 pitch, 9 strike, 1-2-3 outing, the first by a Phil in extra innings in 20 years and the first ever by a pitcher who went on to win the game. Speaking of winning, Perez sparkling top of the 10th, set the stage for Raul slam a screaming liner into the right field seats with 1 out in the bottom of the 10th for a 3-2 win. The win is the Phil's 56th of the season and moves them back to 3.5 games up in the NL East.

For the 2nd time in the last 3 years Shane Victorino has been voted into the All Star game via the fan's final vote, making him the 5th Phil to be voted on to this year's All Star team along with Placido Polanco, Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, and Cliff Lee. He has been nursing a sore numb this week and there are some doubts about whether he'll be able to play, but hopefully it will heal in time.

John Mayberry Jr. homered twice and Jimmy Rollins once, while Kyle Kendrick allowed just 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out 2 in 5 innings to help the Phils build an early 6-3 lead. It could have been 7-3, but right before Mayberry's 2nd homer, Dom Brown was called out for missing 2nd while legging out a triple even though replays seemed to show he didn't. That 1 run came back to haunt the Phils later as their injury depleted bullpen failed to hold the lead. David Herndon and Drew Carpenter combined to to give up the lead, in the 6th and 7th innings, while Micheal Stutes and Danys Baez combined to preserve the 6-6 tie through 9 innings. Unfortunately Baez wasn't so lucky in the 9th as Mike Stanton lined a solo shot into the seats for a 7-6 Marlins win. Despite the loss the Phils still have the best record in baseball, but now lead the NL East by only 3 games over the Atlanta Braves as the two teams prepare for a weekend series.

Offensively, it has been a struggle for the Phils much of the season and with Shane Victorino out tonight that struggle figured out to continue. Don't tell that to Chris Volstad or the sad sack Marlins who could only sit and watch helplessly as the Phils exploded for 14 runs on 18 hits. Ryan Howard went for 3 for 4 with a homer, a double, and 4 RBIs, Micheal Martinez had a bases clearing triple and 2 run scored, Jimmy Rollins went 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored, Raul Ibanez went 3 for 5 with a homer and 3 RBIs, Dom Brown went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, Wilson Valdez clubbed a 2 run double, and Ben Francisco had a pinch double and a run scored. Meanwhile, Cole Hamels shut down the Marlins, allowing just 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5 in 8 innings and Scott Mathieson came on in relief in the 9th inning and was somewhat effective in scoreless 9th inning. Put it all together and you get a laughable 14-2 Phils win. If only they could all be like this one.

Unfortunately, Lee couldn't hold the lead, allowing 3 homeruns in the 8th inning to seal the Blue Jay victory. In other news Placido Polanco, Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay, and Cliff Lee were all named to 2011 NL All Star team today. The Phils began a weekend inter league trip in Toronto with a wild one at the Rogers Centre. Kyle Kendrick battled through 7 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5. It wasn't a great start but it was enough to keep the Phils in it and that was all they needed. Down 2-0 after 1, The Phils rallied for runs in the 2nd and 3rd, as Shane Victorino singled and scored in the 2nd and then ripped an RBI singled in the 3rd. Later the Phils fell behind 4-2, before taking their first lead of the afternoon after Dom Brown doubled, stole 3rd and scored in the 6th, and Victorino tripled in a run and scored on a sac fly for a 5-4 lead. Toronto came right back in the bottom of the 7th to take a 6-5 lead. After Danys Baez got through the 8th inning unscathed, the Phils had one last shot to steal victory in the 9th. With nobody out in the 9th, Ryan Howard looped a 2 run single to center to put the Phils ahead to stay 7-6, as Antonio Bastardo followed with his 2nd career save.

Roy Oswalt was forced to leave after just 2 innings, with back soreness and the Phils never recovered dropping their series closer to the Cardinals 12-2. Oswalt was okay before he left, as was Kyle Kendrick in relief as they held the Cardinals to just 6 runs through 6. Ryan Howard's RBI single finally put the Phils on the board in the 6th, cutting the lead to 5-1 at the time. That was as close as they would get as Dannys Baez allowed 7 runs in the 8th to finish the loss.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers stunned hockey world this afternoon trading away captain Mike Richards and leading scorer, Jeff Carter within minutes of each other. Carter went to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 8th overall pick in this year's draft and young winger Jakub Voracek. Richards was sent to the L.A Kings for prospect Braydon Schenn, winger Wayne Simmonds, and a 2nd round pick in the next year's draft. This is an interesting move for a team said to be trying to win now, not later, but these 3 are all intriguiging prospects and could well replace Carter and Richards. Plus, with the cap space cleared by the traded the Flyers were able to come terms with Ilya Bryzgalov on a 9 year $50 million deal. They also probably have the space now to re-sign Ville Leino if they so choose, as well as fill their new need for big center, Brad Richards anyone? Still Bryzgalov better deliver a Cup or Flyers fans will look back on this day for a long time for all the wrong reasons.

SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers biggest need this off season was size inside and they addressed that tonight in the NBA draft. There was a lot of speculation coming into the night the Sixers would trade Andre Iguodala to move up in the draft but it didn't happen. Instead they stayed put and with the 16th pick in draft they selected USC center Nikola Vucevic. Vucevic averaged a double double this past season for the Trojans and was blocking a shot a game so he should help the Sixers in the post. He does probably need to get a little bigger though. It's been a while since the Sixers last had a 2nd round pick, but they actually did tonight and with 50th pick in the draft they selected Temple forward/center Lavoy Allen. The Owls all time leading rebounder, Allen has first round talent but many question his desire which is why he dropped to 2nd round. Considering Tony Battie probably won't be back with the Sixers next season and Mo Speights is awful defensively, Allen's strength, there's a good chance he makes the team out of training camp.

The Phils rebounded from a tough series in Seattle and answered all the detractors about their offensive production all in one inning tonight St. Louis. Despite 6 innings of 1 run from Roy Halladay the Phils appeared on their way to another loss before the Cardinal bullpen imploded in the 8th inning thanks some rare patience at the plate displayed by the Phils. The inning actually started with an easy flyout by Jimmy Rollins, then Shane Victorino singled, Chase Utley walked, and Ryan Howard and Placido Polanco were both hit by pitch to push across a game tying run. Then Raul Ibanez struck out and just when it seemed St.Louis might limit the damage, Ben Francisco slapped a pinch RBI single to continue the inning and then all heck broke loose. Carlos Ruiz walked, Micheal Martinez walked, Rollins singled, Victorino walked, Utley singled, Howard singled, and finally Wilson Valdez flied out to end the inning. In all the Phils scored 9 runs in the inning on just 5 hits, none of them extra base hits. Antonio Bastardo and David Herndon finished off the 10-2 win from there.
