SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers returned to the Wachovia center tonight for a matchup with mr.big shot, Chauncey Billups, and the Denver Nuggets. They were looking to find their footing in the second half of the season after a rocky start against the Pacers last night. Unfortunately, it was just more of the same tonight against the Nuggets. The Sixers again struggled from the field shooting just 32%. To make matters worse Andre Miller went down with an injury and it is still unknown how serious it is. Without him, Lou Williams would be the starting point guard with no one backing him up. Hopefully Miller's injury isn't too serious. Anyway back to the game, if nothing else Maurice Speights did get back on track tonight with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Sixers did play well for a half with a 10 point, 47-37 lead at the half. In the 2nd half Miller went down and the Sixers just seemed to run out of gas. By the 4th quarter Denver had rallied ahead by 3 with the score 71-68. In the 4th quarter Denver pulled away for good eventually winning by 12 with the final score 101-89. So the Sixers drop their 2nd in a row to fall to 27-26 overall and 7th in the Eastern conference.

The Sixers returned from the all star break tonight as they traveled to Indianapolis for a matchup against the Pacers. They were looking to pick up where they left off before the break on a 4 game winning streak. Instead they came out rusty, shooting just 38% from the field and 13% from beyond the arc in a close loss. The Defense was okay with 11 steals, but it didn't matter as the shots just didn't fall tonight for the Sixers. Andre Iguodala was the only bright spot for the Sixers with a game high 20 points and 9 assists. Meanwhile, Maurice Speights, the Sixer spark plug just before the break, registered 0 points, rebounds, or blocks on the night. He'll need to wake up again if the Sixers are to get going again. Anyway back to the game, the Pacers lead early by 10 after a quarter of play and by 11 at the half with the score 55-44. By the 4th quarter the lead was up to 17 with the score 80-63. Finally in the 4th quarter the Sixers mounted a rally but it was too little too late and the Sixers eventually succumbed by9 with the final score 100-91. So the Sixers drop to 27-25 overall and into 6th in the Eastern conference.

The Sixers welcomed the Memphis Grizzlies to the Wachovia center tonight for their final game before the all-star break. They were looking to head into the break on a high note with their 3rd straight win. Thanks to some late game heroics by the Andre's Miller and Iguodala, the Sixers rallied late to secure victory over the lowly Grizzlies. Offensively, Miller led the way with 24 points and 9 assists, while Iggy added 18, and Thaddeus Young contributed 12, as the Sixers shot a blistering 51 % from the field and committed just 9 turnovers. Defensively, as usual the Sixers weren't great, but they were more than adequate forcing 22 Grizzlies turnovers, including 10 steals. Early on the Sixers led by 8 with the score 26-18 heading into the 2nd quarter. By the half Memphis had cut the lead to 4 with the score 41-37. The Sixers were still clinging to a 5 point lead heading into the 4th quarter with the score 64-59. In the 4th Memphis forged ahead for a bit, then the Sixers pushed back ahead before Memphis tied it at 87. Then with 26 seconds to play Iggy hit a runner to put the Sixers up for good 89-87. The Sixers then sunk a couple of free throws to close out a 91-87 win. So the Sixers move to 27-24 overall tying them for the moment with Detroit and Miami and thanks to tiebreakers moving them into 5th in the Eastern conference.

The Sixers were looking to stay above .500 once and for all tonight as they welcomed the Phoenix Suns to the Wachovia center. Although the Sixers weren't dominating at any one point in the game, they were steady throughout. They slowly increased their lead quarter to quarter until they had rolled to an easy win against the road weary Suns. Defensively, the Sixers had another strong night, as not a single Sun managed to score 20 or more, as the Sixers crushed Phoenix on the boards 54-41 and racked up 7 blocks and 8 steals. Offensively, the Sixers did a good job taking advantage of the Suns weariness running up and down the court. Thaddeus Young led the way with 25 points while Andre Iguodala added 22, and Maurice Speights had a career night with a career high 24 points and 7 rebounds. Who needs Elton, when you have Speights. Anyway the Sixers took an early 5 point lead after a quarter of play and never let go. By the half they were up by 11 with the score 55-44. By the 4th quarter they were up by 14 with the score 80-66. Finally in the 4th quarter with mostly benchwarmers on the floor, the Sixers continued to boost their lead until they had won by 17 with the final score 108-91. So the Sixers move to 2 games above .500 at 26-24 overall, but remain 7th in the Eastern conference.

Coming in the Flyers had won 13 in a row against the Thrashers, and goalie Antero Niittymaki, who not surprisingly got the start in goal, was a perfect 12-0 against Atlanta. After another 29 saves and 2 more goals from Jeff Carter the Flyers had won 14 in a row against the Thrashers and Niittymaki was a perfect 13-0 against Atlanta. Early in the 1st period Carter scored his first for a 1-0 lead. Early in the 2nd period Joffrey Lupul made it 2-0. Early in the 3rd period Carter scored his 2nd for a 3-0 lead. A few minutes later Ilya Kovalchuk scored on the power play to cut the lead to 3-1. Late in the period Slava Kozlov scored yet another power play goal to cut the lead to 3-2. The Sixers welcomed the Miami Heat, currently one spot ahead of the Sixers in the Eastern conference, to the Wachovia center tonight, as they looked to get back over .500 yet again. For 3 quarters Miami appeared headed to victory then the Sixers turned up the defense, Royal Ivey hit a couple threes, Maurice Speights started throwing them down, and suddenly the Sixers were rolling to a key win. The bench led the way for the Sixers offense on the night, as Speights scored 15, Ivey added 11, and Lou Williams posted10, as seven Sixers scored in double figures on the night, despite a low shooting percentage from the field and beyond the arc. Defensively, the Sixers may have had their best night of the season, as they held the league's leading scorer, Dwayne Wade to just 21 points, 7 and a half points under his average, and outrebounded Miami 40-35 while posting 6 blocks and 7 steals. The Sixers actually led briefly after one quarter of play, then Miami took over in the 2nd quarter and by the start of the 4th quarter they held a semi-comfortable 6 point lead with the score 69-63. In the 4th quarter it was all Sixers as they outscored Miami 31-15, to roll to a 10 point 94-84 win. So the Sixers improve to 25-24 overall, now just a game behind Miami for 6th in the Eastern conference.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers completed their home and home with the Bruins this afternoon as they traveled to Boston. Early on it looked like it would repeat of Thursday night in Philly as Boston scored 3 times in first period, prompting John Stevens to pull goalie Marty Biron in favor of Antero Niittymaki after just a peeriod of play. Niittymaki did the job though, not allowing a single goal the rest of the way as the Flyers rallied to force overtime. Early in the first period Marc Savard scored for a 1-0 Bruin lead. Then late in the period Simon Gagne scored to knot it up briefly. A few minutes later Byron Bitz scored for a 2-1 Boston lead and Chuck Kobasew quickly followed Bitz to make it 3-1 Boston. Early in the 2nd period Glen Metropolit and Scott Hartnell each scored to even it up again at 3. In the 3rd period neither team could score sending the game into overtime. There just 3 minutes into the overtime period Randy Jones bounced one in off a Bruin defenseman for a 4-3 Flyers' victory. So the Orange Black move to 27-15-9 for 63 points overall and now 5th in the Eastern conference.

The Sixers welcomed the Indiana Pacers to the wachovia center tonight. After consecutive heartbreaking losses to the Celtics and the Nets, the Sixers desperately needed a win to once again even their record at .500. They were also in desperate need of something positive to hang on to, after it was announced earlier in the day that Elton Brand would have season ending shoulder surgery. The Sixers did not play their best on this night, but fortunately the Pacers didn't play that great either and thanks to double-doubles from Andre Iguodala with 20 points, and 11 rebounds, Andre Miller with 13 points and 12 assists, and Samuel Dalembert with 18 points and 20 rebounds the Sixers eventually hung on to win. The first half decided little as Indiana held a slim 56-54 lead at halftime. In the 3rd quarter the Sixers pushed ahead seemingly for good, taking an 11 point, 80-69 lead, into the 4th quarter. Once again the however, the Sixers struggled to close the door on the Pacers, but eventually hung to win by 5 with the final score 99-94. So the Sixers move back to .500 at 24-24 overall and remain 7th in the Eastern conference.

The Flyers began a home and home with the Boston Bruins tonight at the Wachovia center. Thus far Boston hasthe top record in the NHL by a wide margin. The Flyers were hoping to cut into that margin a bit tonight and prove themselves worthy of the cup. Despite playing them tough for two periods the shorthanded Orange and Black, with Mike Richards, Scottie Upshall, and Braydon Coburn all sitting out with the flu, ran out of steam in 3rd period. Marty Biron saved 30 of 33 shots, in a solid performance, and the Flyers killed 5 Bruins power plays and yet Boston found a way to win, sound familiar?. Neither team could score until early in the 2nd period as Micheal Ryder scored for a 1-0 Bruins lead. A couple minutes later Scott Hartnell tied it up at 1. Early in the 3rd period David Krejci scored for a 2-1 Bruins lead. Finally a few minutes later Denis Wideman made it 3-1 Bruins to put away yet another Boston victory. In their third meeting of the season thus far after Boston blowouts, the Sixers hoped the third time would be the charm as they welcomed the currently Garnetless Celtics to the Wachovia center. The Sixers needed the win to avoid falling back under .500 yet again. Unfortunately despite doing everything in their power to take down the mighty Celtics the Sixers came up short. Andre Iguodala scored 22, Andre Miller dropped 21, Samuel Dalembert posted a season high 14, and even Reggie Evans got in the act with 8 points and 10 rebounds, but still it was not enough. The Sixer defense was about as tough as it has been all season and still Boston found a way to shoot over 50% from the field. The Sixers even took care of the ball for once, with just 5 turnovers, to 20 for the Celtics, and still Boston found a way to win. Early on it looked like more of the same, with Boston up by 12 heading into the 2nd quarter. The Sixers managed to hang with Boston for the rest of half and actually had the lead a couple of times, before Boston win back up by 1 at halftime with the score 50-49. Heading into the 4th quarter it was the Sixers who held the tedious one point lead with the score 70-69. Finally in the 4th quarter the Sixers led most of the way and were up by 3 with 43 seconds to play but Ray Allen was somehow left open for a three to tie the score at 97. With 7 seconds to play Iggy hit a seemingly game winning 17 footer for a 99-97 lead, but again Allen was somehow left open on the ensuing Boston possession and drilled another 3 with one second to play to produce yet another heartbreaking Sixer's loss this time 100-99. So once the again the Sixers fall under .500 at 23-24.

After finally getting back over .500 the Sixers looked to stay that way as they welcomed the New Jersey Nets to the wachovia center. For three quarters of play it looked like the Sixers would do just that. However, the Sixers hot shooting finally cooled off in the 4th quarter as they missed their last 18 shots from the field in succession. Thanks to the incredible 24 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 blocks accumulated by Brooke Lopez the Nets were able to capitalize on the Sixers dryspell to rally back for a last second win. The Sixers were simply terrible on offense in the 2nd half and overall they shot just 36% from the field and 29% from beyond the arc. Thus another solid defensive effort, with 10 steals and 7 blocks was not enough on this night. Early on the Sixers took care of business with an 8 point lead at the half and a 17 point lead at one point late in the 3rd quarter. Then the Sixers started missing and by the start of the 4th quarter the Nets had closed to within 10. Finally in the 4th quarter the Sixers went ice cold with just 8 points as the Nets rallied to hand the Sixers a heartbreaking 85-83 win. So the Sixers drop back to .500 at 23-23 overall but remain 7th in the Eastern conference.

Thanks to the long flight and the 2nd game in as many nights the Flyers were simply out of gas in this one as the Flyers failed to score a single goal against Blues goalie Chris Mason. Meanwhile Antero Niittymaki strangely got the start again in goal and he too appeared a bit out of gas allowing 4 goals. Early in the first period Jay Mclement scored for a 1-0 lead. Early in the 2nd period Carlo Colaiacovo scored for a 2-0 lead. A few minutes later David Backles scored a power play goal for a 3-0 lead. Late in the period Patrik Berglund scored another power play goal to put away the 4-0 Blues win for good. So the Orange and Black drop to 26-14-9 overall and 6th in the Eastern conference.

The Sixers returned home tonight for a matchup with the lowly still agent zeroeless Washington Wizards, winners of just 9 games all season. Thus it was a golden opportunity for the Sixers to finally get back over .500. Thanks to 54% shooting from the field and tough 4th quarter defense when it mattered most they were able to take advantage of the opportunity. Andre Iguodala and Willie Green led the way offensively with 20 points each, while Thaddeus Young added 18 and Lou Williams pumped in 14 off the bench. Defensively it was a team effort with Elton Brand registering 4 blocks, and Thaddeus Young accumulating 9 rebounds and 2 steals. Early on Green had the hot hand as the Sixers rolled to a 15 point lead after a quarter of play and a 7 point lead at the half with the score 46-39. In the 3rd and 4th quarters the Wiz slowly chipped away at the Sixers lead and actually got within a point late in the 4th quarter. Then sweet Lou hit a trey, and Iggy got hot as the Sixers locked down on defense and rolled to a 10 point win with the final score 104-94. So at long last the Sixers move above .500 at 23-22 overall, but remain 7th in the Eastern conference.

Early in the first period Richards scored his first for a 1-0 lead. Late in the period ex-Flyer Vinny Prospal knotted it up at 1 on the power play. Early in the 2nd period Randy Jones got the Flyers power play going for a 2-1 lead. Late in the period, Richards scored his 2nd for a 3-1 lead. Early in 3rd period Jeff Carter did it again for a 4-1 lead. Late in the period Scott Hartnell made it 5-1. Finally with about 7 minutes to play Carter scored again for a 6-1 lead. They struggled again from the beyond the arc at a measly .08%. However, Andre Iguodala put up 20 and Elton Brand scored an encouraging 14 off the bench to provide the Sixers with some scoring punch. After outgunning the Knicks on Saturday the Sixers traveled to New Orleans tonight for a matchup with the Hornets. The Sixers continued their hot shooting from the field at 53% but hit just 2 of 14 from beyond the arc while the Hornets, namely Peja Stojakovic, drilled 14 threes which proved to be the difference. The Sixers did rack up plenty of blocks and steals and even out rebounded New Orleans 37-32, but the Hornets were just too hot from beyond the arc. Aside from the barrage of threes the Sixers also turned the ball over 21 times which also didn't help their cause. As for Elton Brand, in his 2nd game back from the injured list, he did very little with just a block and 3 rebounds and is obviously not quite 100% yet. Early on the Sixers actually had the lead by 4 after the 1st quarter and by 7 at the half with the score 47-40. In the 3rd quarter New Orleans began hitting threes, pulled away, and never looked back with a 6 point lead heading into the 4th quarter, leading to an eventual 15 point win, with the final score 101-86. So the Sixers drop back under .500 at 21-22 overall but remain 7th in the Eastern conference.
