The Flyers stayed hot tonight against the Florida Panthers as Antero Niittymaki racked up yet another win and 28 more saves. The Flyers got off to a blistering start and it was just enough to hang on late for the win. In the 1st period of play, Kimmo Timmonen and Jay Bouwmeester scored early for a 1-1 tie. Then the Orange and Black reeled off three late goals in the space of 5 minutes(Simon Gagne, and Daniel Briere scored power play goals, while Scott Hartnell tapped one in at even strength), to take a commanding 4-1 lead into the break. In the second period Rostislav Olesz and Stephen Weiss each scored late goals for the Panthers to cut the lead to 4-3. Late in the 3rd period Carolina still trailed 4-3 and pulled goalie Tomas Vokoun in favor of the extra attacker. The move backfired as Briere scored on the Panther's empty net with just under 40 seconds to play to clinch a 5-3 Flyer's victory. So the Flyers improve to 24-15-5, but remain in 3rd place in the Atlantic division.

SIXERS NEWS

It's over, it's finally over. The Sixer's seven game losing streak finally came to an end tonight in Houston against the Rockets and it wasn't easy as the Sixers needed a late rally to pull out the win. Offensively, six Sixers scored in double figures(Andre Iguodala, Andre Miller, Willie Green, Samuel Dalembert, Louis Williams, Thaddeus Young) with Miller's 26 leading the way. Defensively, it was a team effort and a bad one at that, as the Rockets out rebounded the Sixers 40-32 and shot nearly 50% from the field. Through the 1st quarter of play, it was tight as Houston clung to a one point lead, with the score 31-30. By the half the Rockets lead was up to 5 with the score 60-55. In the 3rd quarter Houston continued to increase its lead and road into the 4th quarter ahead 85-74. The Sixers 8th straight loss seemed at hand, but a furious 4th quarter rally ensued, as the Sixers outscored the Rockets 37-22 in the quarter. A Dalembert dunk put the Sixers ahead to stay with just over 2 minutes to play, and they held on to win 111-107. So the Sixers improve to 15-24 overall, but remain in 4th place in the Atlantic division.

The Sixers just can't buy a win right now. Tonight in San Antonio they gave the Spurs everything could handle, but alas once again it wasn't enough. Offensively, only 3 Sixers scored in double figures (Willie Green, Andre Iguodala, Samuel Dalembert), with Green's 21 leading the way. Defensively, Samuel Dalembert ruled in the paint yet again, with 20 rebounds and 3 blocks, but on this defense fueled night the Spurs were just hair quicker, grabbing 50 rebounds and that was really the difference. Through the first quarter of play the Spurs held a slim 27-24 lead. By the half San Antonio had upped their lead to 5, with the score 52-46. By the end of the third quarter the Sixers had rallied ahead 65-64 and hoped reigned eternal for a Sixer's victory. Unfortunately, the 4th quarter belonged to San Antonio, as they pulled away before holding on for an 89-82 victory. So the Sixers drop to 14-24 overall, but remain in 4th place in the Atlantic division.

The Flyers stayed hot this afternoon with a hard fought victory over the Washington Capitals. Marty Biron returned to goal tonight (after Niittymaki lost last night) and delivered 28 saves and yet another solid performance by a Flyer's goalie to spirit a victory. Early in the 1st period Alexander Semin scored to put Washington up 1-0. Late in the period Mike Knuble scored for a 2-1 Flyers lead. Jim Dowd and R.J Umberger each scored early goals in the 2nd period for a 4-1 Flyers lead. Mike Green and Alexander Ovechkin answered for Washington late in the period to cut the lead to 4-3. Midway through the 3rd period Mike Richards scored to push the Flyers lead to 5-3. Late in the period Michael Nylander scored to cut the lead to 5-4. Then with under a minute to play, Washington pulled goalie Brent Johnson in favor of the extra attacker, but Kimmo Timonen scored on the Capitals empty net, to put an end to their hopes and clinch a 6-4 Flyers victory. So the Flyers improve to 23-15-5 overall but remain in 3rd place in the Atlantic division.

The Flyers winning ways were derailed a little this afternoon in Boston against the Bruins. For the 4th game in a row Antero Niittymaki got the start and came up with 28 saves, but it wasn't enough. Late in the first period, Jeff Carter scored on the power play for a 1-0 Flyers lead. In the 2nd period. Marc Savard and Marco Sturm each scored on the power play for a 2-1 Boston lead. Early in the 3rd period, Peter Schaefer made it 3-1 Bruins and for a moment all hope seemed lost. Then the Flyers battled back as Scott Hartnell and Daniel Briere each scored down the stretch to knot the score at 3 and force the game into overtime. Unfortunately, just 43 seconds into the overtime period, Aaron Ward scored unassisted to win it for Boston 4-3. So the Flyers drop to 22-15-5, but remain in 3rd place in the Atlantic division.

The Lame times continue for the Sixers as they lost their 6th straight tonight, this time to the Chicago Bulls, blowing a huge 1st quarter lead in the process. Offensively, four Sixers scored in double figures(Andre Miller, Andre Iguodala, Samuel Dalembert, Louis Williams) with Iggy's 25 leading the way. Defensively, Samuel Dalembert had a spectacular night, with 20 rebounds and 2 blocks(and 21 points for that matter). With Reggie Evans chipping in 13 rebounds as well, the Sixers easily out rebounded the Bulls 49-41, but it wasn't enough. Through the 1st quarter of play, the Sixers jumped out to a big early lead, 27-14. In the 2nd quarter the Bulls reversed all that great Sixers energy and went into the half leading 45-40. In the 3rd quarter the Bulls upped their lead to 12, with the score 70-58. In the 4th quarter, the Sixers posted a furious final charge, but after cutting the Bulls lead down to 3 with 21 seconds to play, they ran out of steam as Chicago hit its free throws down the stretch and hung on for a 100-97 victory. So the Sixers drop to 14-23 overall, but remain in 4th place in the Atlantic division.

The Flyers went with the hot stick tonight in New York, starting Antero Niittymaki in goal for the third straight night. The move paid off as Niittymaki saved 39 of the 41 shots he faced to limit the struggling Rangers to two goals. The Flyers meanwhile, couldn't stop scoring. In the 1st period the Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as Ryan Hollweg scored twice early in the period. From there on out it was all orange and black. In the 2nd period Mike Knuble and Stefan Ruzicka each scored early in the period and Scott Hartnell added a late score for a 3-2 Flyers lead. In the 3rd period, Scott Hartnell scored twice early to finish off a hat trick, and Simon Gagne, back at last, added a late goal, his first in 25 games if you haven't heard, to cap off an easy 6-2 Flyers victory. So with this, their 6th win in their last 7, the Flyers improve to 22-15-4, but remain in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division.

After their short stay at the Wachovia center, the Sixers went back on the road today as they traveled to Toronto to visit Chris Bosh and the Raptors. Despite another gritty effort and yet another late surge, they fell short for their 5th straight loss. Offensively, five Sixers scored in double figures(Andre Miller, Willie Green, Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young, Louis Williams) with Green's 18 leading the way. Defensively, it was a team effort as the Sixers out rebounded Toronto 41-34. Unfortunately, with 55% shooting from the field, and 42.9 % shooting from beyond the arc, there weren't many rebounds for the Raptors to pull in. Through the 1st quarter of play, it was a tight contest with the scored tied at 25. By the half, it was still a tight contest with the Raptors leading by two, 52-50. The 3rd quarter was the difference as Toronto outscored the Sixers 27-16, to take a 13 point, 79-66 lead. In the 4th quarter, the two teams mostly traded baskets and the Raptors won fairly easily 109-96. So the Sixers drop to 14-22 overall, but remain in 4th place in the Atlantic division.

Antero Niittymaki got his 2nd start in a row in goal tonight against the Atlanta Thrashers for the first time this season and he made it count, saving 27 of the 28 shots he faced to spirit the Flyers to victory. Midway through the 1st period ubertalent Ilya Kovalchuk scored to put Atlanta ahead 1-0 early. From there it was all Orange and Black for the rest of the night. Early in the 2nd period Steve Downie scored to tie it at 1. Then late in the period Jeff Carter scored twice(one power play goal and one even strength goal), and Scott Hartnell slapped in a shorthanded goal in the final second of the period for a 4-1 Flyers lead. The 3rd period was scoreless as Niittymaki tightened up in goal, and the Flyers got the 4-1 victory. So the Flyers improve to 21-15-4 overall and jump to 3rd place in the Atlantic division.

SIXERS NEWS

Another night, another loss for the Sixers, this time at home against the Milwaukee Bucks. Apparently, jet lag is too much for some teams to overcome. Thanks a lot NBA scheduling guy. Anyway, offensively, five Sixers scored in double figures( Andre Miller, Willie Green, Andre Iguodala, Samuel Dalembert, Louis Williams) with Iggy's 21 leading the way. Defensively, Samuel Dalembert was again the standout with 16 rebounds and 3 blocks, as the Sixers out rebounded Milwaukee 47-39. So all in all the Sixers actually pretty well tonight, but it just wasn't quite enough. Through the 1st quarter of play the Bucks lead by 9, 26-17. By the half the Bucks lead by 10, 46-36. Through the 3rd quarter the Sixers had whittled that lead down to 6, 64-58. In the 4th quarter the Sixers continued their late rally, and closed to within 2 with 50 seconds to play, but they wouldn't get any closer, and fell to the Bucks 87-83. So the Sixers drop to 14-21 overall, but remain 4th in the Atlantic division.

There is good news and bad news for the Flyers as they head into this week. First the bad news. The Flyers always populous injured list grew today, as Sami Kapanen who was hit in the face with the puck and Joffrey Lupul who was accidentally body slammed to the ice by his teammate Derian Hatcher(both in Saturday night's game against Toronto), were added to the tally. Scottie Upshall who has missed the last Flyer's 2 games with a high ankle sprain will also remain on injured reserve. Now the good news. Jason Smith, who has missed the Flyer's last 2 games with a sprained shin hopes to the return to the lineup on Thursday. Also, now rejoice Flyer's fans! Simon Gagne, yes Simon Gane, who has missed the Flyers' last 25 games due to a concussion, expects to make his long awaited return to the Orange and Black on Thursday as well, after a successful practice with the team earlier today. Seriously though, as well as the Flyers have been playing lately, if they could ever get all these guys back on ice at the same time, they could really go places.

The Sixers concluded their 6 game road trip tonight surprise!, in Denver against AI and the Nuggets. Que the bad marketing ploy. Unfortunately, the bad marketing seemed to have rubbed off on Mr. Iverson, as he dropped 38 on his old mates, to help propel Denver to victory. Offensively, 6 Sixers scored in double figures(Andre Miller, Willie Green, Andre Iguodala, Samuel Dalembert, Thaddeus Young, Louis Williams) with Miller's 22 leading the way. Defensively, Samuel Dalembert's 15 rebounds and 2 blocks, led the way among 3 Sixers who reached double figures in rebounds(Reggie Evans and the other AI, Andre Iguodala, were the others) as the Sixers out rebounded Denver 53-49. In the end though it didn't matter as Denver simply had too much fire power for the Sixers tonight. Through the 1st quarter of play the Nuggets led by 7, 29-22. By the half that lead was up to 10, 53-43. In the 3rd quarter the Sixers rallied back and actually tied it at 62 at one point before Denver pulled away again and took a 10 point lead into the 4th quarter, 77-67. There, Denver kept the Sixers at bay until they had held on for an easy 109-96 win. So the Sixers drop to 14-20 overall, but remain in 4th place in the Atlantic division.

The Sixers had been playing pretty well during their current 6 game road trip, but tonight against the Lakers, in this, their 5th of the 6 games, they weren't so good. Offensively, 4 Sixers scored in double figures, but only one starter,(Louis Williams, Jason Smith, Thaddeus Young, Andre Iguodala) with sweet Lou's 17 off the bench leading the way. Defensively, the Sixers had a terrible night. Andrew Bynum dominated Samuel Dalembert with 16 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 17 points, as the Lakers out rebounded the Sixers 46-35. All told the Lakers shot 66.2 % from the field, and 57.1 % from beyond the arc. Simply put, the Sixers couldn't stop them all night and the Lakers knew it. Through the 1st quarter of play the Lakers were already ahead by 8, 34-26. By the half L.A led by 24, with the score 64-40. By the start of 4th quarter the lead was 28, with the score 96-68. In the 4th, using mostly reserves the Sixers actually, cut back into the Lakers lead a bit, but it was for naught, as L.A eventually ran away with a 31 point win, with the final score 124-93. pretty embarrassing to say the least. So the Sixers drop to 14-19 overall, but remain in 4th place in the Atlantic division.

FLYERS NEWS

After three straight wins the Flyers took it on the chin tonight in New Jersey at the hands of Marty Brodeur and the Devils. For whatever reason the Flyers just can't seem to score on the guy, while the Devils have no problem scoring on Marty Biron. All I can say is where the hell is Simon Gagne when you need him. Anyway, the Devils got off to a quick start as Paul Martin and Travis Zajac each scored in the 1st period for a 2-0 Devils lead. Late in the 2nd period Patrick Elias made it 3-0 New Jersey. In 3rd period, with Brodeur forming a veritable wall in front of the New Jersey goal, there was no further scoring and the Devils closed out a 3-0 victory. So the Flyers drop to 19-15-4 overall and back into last place in the Atlantic Division, but don't worry they are only 7 points out of first and there is still plenty of season left.

Defensively, Samuel Dalembert was again the standout with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks, but he had help this time from Reggie Evans who pulled down 12 rebounds, as the Sixers ruled the boards 40-26. As for the game, it was close, exciting, and unfortunately a crushing blow for the Sixers. Through the 1st quarter of play the Jazz clung to a 24-20 lead. By the half that lead was up to 6, with the score 53-47. Through 3 quarters that lead was up to 7, with score 78-71. Finally, in the 4th quarter the Sixers cut into the Jazz lead, and were within 2, with score 105-103, with just 36 seconds remaining. Then former Sixer Kyle Korver, hit 8 free throws down the stretch and the Jazz hung on for a 110-107 victory. So the Sixers drop to 14-18 overall and remain in 4th place in the Atlantic division.

Defensively, Samuel Dalembert was again the standout with 7 rebounds and 6 blocks. Additionally, although the Sixers were out rebounded by Seattle 46-35, they had a much better shooting night, shooting nearly 50% from the field and from beyond the arc. As for the game it was closer than the final score would indicate. Through the 1st quarter of play Seattle actually led 23-21. By the half however, the Sixers had exploded for a 12 point, 46-34 lead. The rest of the way they used that lead to hang on. Through three quarters Seattle had cut the lead, to 11 with the score 73-62. The Sixers continued their road trip today with a visit to Portland to face the young Trailblazers. They came in looking to win their third game in a row, but after three solid quarters of play, the game slipped away from them in the 4th quarter. Offensively, only three Sixers scored in double figures(Andre Iguodala, Andre Miller, Rodney Carney) with Iggy's 24 leading the way. Additionally, Andre Miller had a great night with 11 assists to go along with his 17 points, but this time it went for naught. Defensively, the Sixers did not have a very good night, They were out rebounded 31-29, and turned the ball over six more times than the Trailblazers did. Additionally they shot under 40% from the field, but allowed Portland to shoot nearly 50% from the filed. That just won't get it done. As for the game it was all Sixers in the 1st half and all Blazers in the 2nd. Through the 1st quarter of play Portland led 21-16. By the half the Sixers had rallied to take a nine point, 45-36 lead. At one point in the 3rd quarter that lead ballooned up to 11, but Portland turned the tables, and by the 4th quarter they trailed by only one, with score 63-62. In the 4th quarter it was all Portland as they outscored the Sixers 35-9 and wound up winning easily 97-72. So the Sixers drop to 13-17 overall and back into sole possession of 4th place in the Atlantic division.

EAGLES NEWS

The Eagles finished out their season today with a visit from the Buffalo Bills. Thanks to another tough defensive effort and just enough fireworks from the Eagles offense, the Birds pulled out the win. Offensively, Donovan Mcnabb completed 29 of his 41 passes for 345 yards and a touchdown and Brian Westbrook amassed 99 total yards from scrimmage, as the Eagles collected nearly 400 yards of offense. Defensively, the Eagles limited Buffalo to just 271 total yards of offense, and o TDs, exactly what they're coached to do. As for the game, it was one of those boring season ending games when you know you're not going to playoffs, but it was competitive nonetheless and as some might say it upheld the integrity of the NFL. In the 1st quarter Mcnabb hit rookie TE Brent Celek with a 2 yard TD pass, for the only score, to put the Eagles up 7-0. Late in the 2nd quarter the two teams traded short field goals for a 10-3 Eagles lead at the half. Late in the 3rd quarter Rian Lindell hit his second field goal of the day for Buffalo to cut the lead to 10-6. Then Reggie Brown caught what appeared to be a TD pass from Mcnabb, before fumbling into the endzone, where Kevin Curtis recovered it for 17-6 Eagles lead. Rian Lindell then ended the quarter with his 3rd field goal of the day to cut the lead to 17-9. The Bills had opportunities after that in the 4th quarter to put the ball in the end zone and tie the game, but the Eagles' defense stood stout and the Birds hung on to win 17-9. So the Eagles finish the year 8-8, which is not bad considering all they have been through, but it's good enough only for last place in the NFC East, where Dallas(13-3), NY(10-6), and Washington(9-7) all made the playoffs.

FLYERS NEWS

The Flyers are as hot as they're uniforms now, with this their 3rd straight victory, this time over the Florida Panthers. Antero Niittymaki got the start in goal, giving Marty Biron a rare night off, and saved all 38 shots he faced. So it was a rare good night for Niittymaki. As for the game it was largely uneventful thanks to the equally strong performance of Panther's goalie Thomas Vokoun with 19 saves out of the 20 shots he faced. The first period was scoreless. The second period was also scoreless. Finally, midway through the 3rd period Derian Hatcher finally made it 1-0 Flyers, with the only goal of the night. So that's how it ended with a 1-0 Flyers victory. So the Flyers improve to 19-14-4 overall and move back up into 3rd place in the Atlantic division.

The miracle has happened, the Flyers have actually won two in a row. Can you believe it? okay so maybe that's a little dramatic, but I mean it took them long enough didn't it. Anyway Joffrey Lupul was the star again with a goal and 2 assists to power the Orange and Black to victory. Lupul opened the scoring on a penalty shot midway through the 1st period. Then late in the period Vinny Lecavalier tied it at 1. Mike Knuble made it 2-1 late in the 2nd period. Early in the 3rd period, Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell each scored to make it 4-1 Flyers. Midway through the period, former Flyer Vaclav Prospal cut the lead to 4-2. From there Marty Biron and his 31 saves out of 33 shots faced closed out the 4-2 Flyers victory. So the Flyers improve to 17-14-4 overall and move back up into 4th in the Atlantic division.

SIXERS NEWS

The Sixers made their first big roster move under new GM Ed Stefanski, trading 3 point ace Kyle Korver to the Utah Jazz for guard Gordan Giricek and a 1st round pick. The pick is a conditional and can't be used until 2009 where it would be a late first round pick anyway and thus not necessarily that much of an asset. Giricek is a solid bt not great player, kind of like Korver, except he doesn't shoot 40% from beyond the arc. So the Sixers likely won't be hitting anymore three pointers anytime soon. If nothing else, the move does free up some cap room for Sixers, something they've been looking to do for a while. So while this move doesn't exactly help them now, it will help to improve the Sixers in the future, which is apparently all they are concerned with at this point.

Well, it had to end some time and it finally did tonight. Yes that's right after six agonizing games the Flyers finally snapped their 6 game losing streak with a victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Joffrey Lupul scored 2 goals and Marty Biron saved 34 of the 35 shots he faced to fuel the win. Late in the first period Jeff Carter made it 1-0 Flyers. Late in the 2nd period Lupul made it 2-0 with his first goal. Then Mats Sundin produced the Maple Leaf's only goal of the night to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the 3rd period. There Danny Briere and Lupul scored a couple early goals to put away the 4-1 victory, as Biron held the Leafs out of the net the rest of the way. So the Flyers improve to 16-14-4 overall but remain in last place in the Atlantic division, as their divisional opponents all won while they were idle. Defensively, it was a team effort as they amassed 40 rebounds and 9 blocks to the Heat's 38 rebounds and 3 blocks, as well as limiting Miami to just 1 for 13 shooting from beyond the are which proved to be the difference. As for the game the Sixers jumped out to a big lead early and held on late for a relatively easy win. Through one quarter the Sixers led by 8 with the score 25-17. By the half, the Sixers lead was up to 17 and the route appeared to be on. Then in the 3rd quarter the Heat rallied and closed to within 10, with the score 74-64 heading into 4th quarter. They would not get any closer as the Sixers stopped the bleeding and hung on to win 95-86. So the Sixers improve to 12-16 overall, but remain in 4th place in the Atlantic division.

The Phils continued their off season yesterday by signing outfielder So Taguchi to a one year deal. Taguchi hit .290 last year for the St. Louis Cardinals and .406 as a pinch hitter to lead all pinch hitters. Taguchi has been one of the best defensive outfielders in baseball for a number of years now, so that's probably what we'll he be for the Phils, a late defensive replacement, most likely for the defensively inept Pat Burrell, basically what Shane Victorino did last season. Thus, once again all the Phils have added to their roster with this signing is depth. I guess they don't believe in upgrades.

EAGLES NEWS

The Mac Attack is back. For the second week in a row Donovan Mcnabb showcased the full set of skills that made him an elite Pro-Bowl QB up until 2 years ago when the Eagles lost the Super Bowl. It seems pretty clear now that he's finally full recovered from the knee injury that sidelined him last season. Kevin Kolb better get comfortable on the bench for a while. All told Mcnabb accounted for 300 of the Eagles 435 total yards(263 yards and 3 TDs passing, 37 yards rushing on 6 carries). He was not alone though, as Brian Westbrook rushed 17 times for 100 yards(surpassing the Eagles single season mark for total yards, previously Wilbert Montgomery's 2006) and Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown, each caught 6 passes for a combined 151 yards and 2 TDs,(Curtis for 78 yards and 1 TD, Brown for 73 yards and 1 TD). As for the Eagles defense it allowed the Saints to rack up over 300 yards of offense, but as always it kept New Orleans out of the endzone when it mattered most. In fact with 8:52 to go in the 1st half the Saints scored their 2nd TD of the game, and from there on they would not score another. Four times the Saints were stopped deep in Eagles territory in 2nd half. Three of those four times, the Saints settled for field goals, but other time was yet another Eagles goal line stand that resulted in a turn over on downs. As for the game it was a thriller for a while, but once the Eagles got control they never relinquished it. Early in the 1st quarter Mcnabb fumbled the ball after a long run from scrimmage and Curtis recovered it in the end zone for a 7-0 Eagles lead. Two Aaron Stecker TD runs later and the Saints led 14-7. Then late in the quarter Correll Buckhalter ran it in from 20 yards out to tie it at 14, and Brown caught a 31 yard TD pass from Mcnabb for a 21-14 Eagles lead. In the 2nd quarter the two teams traded field goals for a 24-17 Eagles lead at the half. Late in the 3rd quarter following the aforementioned goal line stand, the Eagles marched the near length of the field, and Mcnabb fired a 9 yard TD pass to Greg Lewis for a 31-17 Eagles lead. In the 4th quarter Martin Grammatica hit a pair of field goals to cut the lead to 31-23, but with a little under 3 minutes to play yet another long Eagles drive, capped off by a 7 yard TD pass from Mcnabb to Curtis, followed by an interception by the rookie Linebacker Stewart Bradley, finally put it away for the Eagles as they won 38-23. So the Eagles improve to 7-8 overall, but unfortunately, it is too little too late, for this season, but it does give hope for next season.
